Guys I have a Ship that when fitted out has a range on its guns up to around 60km out. The problem i currently have is that i can not lock onto a target till it is at about 70km and by the time the lock is finnally made (a bit over 12 sec later) the target is generally at about 35km or less.
Is there a way i can either increase the distance i can start locking on from or a way to make my lock happen faster?
Whats the point of having a great reang on guns if i can not lock before they are next to me.

signature analysis skill = faster lock times and long range targeting skill - I believe both are electronic skills - cant remember atm..

I already have that at level 4. Is there anything i can fit to my ship to help? Most things i have found that i thought may help have an optimal range of 25km and thats a long way from 70km.

What you need is a spiffy signal booster there are many available, here you will find info on the items in question.
If i remember right there are low slot, med slot and skills that add a buff to both targeting range and lock time.
Just one word on your lock time though. Using the attributes like sig radius and scan resolution, lock time is dynamic based on the size of ship doing the locking vs the victim.
eg.
Battleship locking a frigate = Zzzzzz Frigate locking a Battleship = DING!
So the smaller ship will always get the lock first (un modified of course).

Thanks for the info. I have been trying to lock on frigates and crusers. makes sense that it takes longer to lock but i still need to reduce it. I generally find that at the current speed of locking that the ships get past the ranges on my guns before or soon after lock. In the end i end up using afterburner to try to keep the distance between me and the target so i can get a lock and the drones to mostly kill them and a few missiles. If there are 4 ships i may get lucky and wipe out one maybe 2 with my guns but most of them get within 15-20km of my before i get a lock and my guns just miss then.

Great thanks. Also the booster will only work for a short time right? If thats the case what happens if the lock takes longer than the time the module runs for?

12 secs is a long time!?
When u are locking? Are you closing in on each other? If so, why not reduce your speed? Or face away from them and accelerate when within locking range if they are much quicker.

Generally you'll just run modules like that on autorepeat forever... -- Proud member of the [23].

Thanks for the great tips so far.
What i currently do is set the ship to keep a rage of 70km from the target even though my guns have a max range of about 60km. If i put on the after burner as well then i will lock on the first one at about 30km if i am lucky.
Following the other tips and putting that together with what i already do I think i can make this work.
If I can already lock onto ships at 71Km and there are modules that boost the locking range etc would that allow me to lock on at 80 to 100km? If so that would be perfect as once i lock on them and if they are over 35km away they are dead in a few shots.

or in my case until I get more isk, more skills and better equipment a sniping Destroyer.
though I am only effective to about 35km right now but for rats its no problem.
