Edited by: Vishnej on 22/02/2006 20:31:24 With the servers finally capable of supporting a fleet, is Goonfleet, with its 800 noobships/frigs/cruisers, in a position to become a major player? Or do you think that tech 2 gear and high skills in most of the more established alliances counts them out from participating at all?
The eternal MMO debate - numbers vs levels. How's it holding up in Eve, for the biggest zerg in existence?

Numbers and organization are key so will probably beat out a smaller group of better players (unless its like kinda close like within 50 ships) --------------- RIP - Smoske, My Friend

50+ vs 50+ will still make a ****load of lag and cause 20% of the players to crash.
so dont think they will change much.

Time will tell.
The real test will be retaining members and keeping them interested while still getting new ones.
It's important to note that, while we have the history of being a frig corp, our November drive is getting along to 3 or 4 million SP and that our 250+ from January are breaking 1-2. As a corporation we are gaining somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 million SP a month.
The smart bomb jokes are warranted because we have members that are dumb enough to not orbit at 6k while tackling, but are becoming less and less germaine as time goes on. Everyday our 'newbies' are jumping into AFs, BSes, BCs, etc. Soon we'll have interdictor pilots, HAC pilots and a few of our capital guys will have boats. We actually have to turn away folks in larger ships and have them get frigs so we have tacklers.
Are we a major player now? No. But in time... with all the help given to us by our OSS friends and BOS as well as the fighting experience we get up north with the Five and FE, well, we may be able to rock a boat or two. We been very lucky to have friends in well established Corps that are willing to train our newbies... especially KIATolon, the man of many faces. We also have some of the hardest working and most dedicated directors in game. You try being a director come recruitment drive time in a massive game like EVE, it's like herding 500 cats.
Time will tell.

You've obviously never been part of a pvp group then have you.
The only way to improve your skills is to be told about every dumb ass thing you do wrong and be called out publically for it :P
I'd be interested to see if goonfleet ever take a serious extended period in delve but anyone thinking that many players will be a push over is kidding themselves.
Viceroy once called RKK "death by a thousand papercuts" back when we were running mass groups of kestrels around.
Goonfleet are just doing the same thing and trust me, 100 papercuts can still kill you the same as getting hit by a bloody big paperback ;)

DB Preacher took the words straight out of my mouth.
KIA have new recruits from time to time, and they learn fast and they learn the hard way. Mistakes they make are not looked upon lightly or with jest often. They do it once, they get told. They do it twice and they get told .... louder, 3rd time its a fkin humiliation, any more than that they fly for someone else.
Its a game, but no one enjoys looking like noobs becuase people can't learn a lesson.

We are helping them. Our directors lead ops every day. KIATolon has been patient enough to take out newbies and show them how to tackle. Our enemies pay hundreds of millions of dollars to have people attack us and force us to become more experienced in fighting.
When you recruit 500 people in the course of a week it becomes really difficult to do individual hand holding. We recruit some new goons, move em to 0.0, give em a mining cruiser and a frigate, all the skills they should need for a month and then help them out as they are learning.
In GoonFleet, we learn things the hard way. Once we get podded a few times we tend to see the error of our ways. And when we make mistakes we tell each other what they are. Sometimes we are harsh about things, but in the end it works out. Afterall, we live in 0.0 where the smallest error can turn you into a killmail. Most of our guys have never spent more than a few hours in Empire.

I've never been part of a famous PvP outfit like yours, of course, but as one of your members said when I popped him in MHC the other day: "Assumption is the mother of all ****ups."
My point, if you missed it, is that if you're a 2 week old player who has his leaders telling the EVE-world he's a dumb ass can't be very pleased.
I'd try to solve those things in a more private way

Geri, the Goons wear their reputation as a badge of pride. Even when used among their own members.
As far as I can tell, it simply makes them try harder to beat the rep and provides them with a sense of unity against outsiders.
Not all methods work the same for different groups. Goonfleet seems to have found one that works well for them. Good luck!

The one forum we recruit from has more than 75,000 members, the majority of which I would say are longtime gamers, and a sizeable number of that majority are MMO players. Seeing as how it's so easy to attract people to Eve once they try it out for a week, I can easily see GoonFleet hitting multiple thousands of members within a year's time. As it is, I estimate that we will hit the skill max of 1300 players by the middle of Summer.

The vast majority of our recruits come into the game on 14 day trial accounts having no prior eve experience. The last I heard, we've got about a 50% retention rate (People upgrading from free trials to paid subscriptions), which is far and beyond anything I'd have predicted prior to joining goonfleet.

I'm extremely proud of my guys. Every time we go out to fight I see people stepping up and taking new roles in the gangs, flying new ships, increasing their skills. Being the security director of Goonfleet and living in Syndicate where you must pvp or leave I see the advantages to numbers and skillpoints and experience in this game. As it stands right now, we have numbers and experience. If your definition of a "noob" is somebody who only has a few million skillpoints, then yes, most of us are noobs. But in terms of in game experience in pvp gangs where organization is key and the slightest mistake gets you killed I feel like we're very far ahead of a lot of corporations. My guys know what to do and they know when to do it...not being able to fly super pwn ships just makes us think how to do more with what we do have.

I prefer the public humiliation approach when it comes to someone screwing up. Having to delete thirty or fourty evemails reminding you not to take the fittings can out of the public hanger tends to stick with someone longer than a private chat with a director.
Unlike other corporations, short of someone ripping us off or purposly leaking information, we don't kick people from goonfleet for screwing up, which is because of how we recruit.
Like someone else in the thread already said, whatever works for your corp.

Goonfleet, I can see you going very far in EVE. The sheer raw power of your PvP force by this coming summer will be absolutely astonishing. While you won't have the kind of industrial base most territory-holding alliances have, your sheer battleship numbers will scare most enemies half to death before you even engage them.
All you must do is keep your reputation. If you do that, you will go from the underdog to the truly respected in the end.
By the way, some advice for keeping your corp numbers below the skilled max: keep an online database of Goonfleet members. On the first of every month, have everyone log into an IGB page (remind them with a corpmail) that simply records their character as active in that database. If someone misses the day, they can always make it up any other time during the month.
If anyone misses two consecutive monthly roll calls, they are automatically kicked from the corp with an EVEmail notifying them of why. If they're still active, of course, they can just call back and rejoin.

We're doing something quite similar to this right now, so Goonfleet's numbers should drop over the next week as we kick out inactives from the corp.

I think we called this one the "Valentines Day Massaccre." Many inactives have been removed already and more will come. I agree, by the end of the summer that 1300 member limit will be an issue if we don't keep digging out the folks who have vanished.
WTB advanced corp management!
Previous posters are correct: Goonfleet's "training" program is pretty much based on having newbies get the crap kicked out of them and being told why it happened in a humiliating fashion. Its mean, but it works. Goons are used to being abused.
P.S. Non-goons posting here, thanks for being a classy bunch. A corp our size is bound to have some *cough* defensive types who tend to muck up any thread about us. You're all invited down to Goontown for some tea and cake. Torpedo flavored cake.
P.P.S. For the overmind!
