Are large hybrid turrets just as bad as large projectile turrets in terms of hitting for good damage? I have 3 points into both (L projectile and hybrid) and either get glances, light hits or misses at optimal range. What is the deal with using them effectively? Thanks.

dual 250 rails are excellent with good tracking skills. You can hit cruisers and rigates at less then 20 km with those .

its the tracking speed and sig resolution of the turrent that is the important factor on weather you hit with a turrent

I canŠt answer your question exactly but I will give some info.
Since you didnŠt say what hybrid and projectiles you are talking about, I assume you are talking about 425mm rails and 1400mm artis.
dev blog about tracking TomB about the "new" accuracy
You can increase tracking by - boosting the stats (equip, skills, implants) - maneuvering your ship to reduce transversal speed - increasing the fighting range (boosting the stats, long range ammo, using falloff)
Some other stuff:
Railguns and artillery have almost the same tracking, but rails have 20% larger optimal and projectiles 45% larger falloff.
Railguns have a higher RoF than artillery. Failures while piloting to reduce transversal are better compensated when you fire more shots.
Artilleries do very bad damage without at least one damage bonus (so maybe rails do better damage on the ship of your choice).
Railguns need lots of cap (so maybe you have to fit more cap rechargers and you can fit less tracking stuff).
Now consider all of the above and everything you can think of and go to the tracking guide to do some number crunching (have fun the next month).
