Being able to enjoy "Star Wars" on the big screen during it's theatrical release still brings wonderful memories. Meeting with my cousins and reinacting scenes from the movies or creating our own is something that gives marvel to being a child. As an adult I still find myself found of what I onced enojyed albeit things have changed.
I had recently purcased Lucas Arts newest title "Empire at War". If you're unaware of this game it was supposed to bring "star wars" into the galactic real time strategy field of gaming. Well, it has fallen flat on its face.
Installation of "Empire at War" was questionablly "quirky". I had to reinstall the game at least 3 times due to an issue with the disc stopping mid way then failing to be recognized. I had even got a replacement from the local game stop which also had the same issues.
Upon installatoin I was thrilled with anticipation to command the workings of the Empire and dominate the galaxy. "Security module not found." At first glance I thought this could have been a sick joke from the Emperor himself.
After about 2 to 3 hours of tweaking out the installation I had no luck. I even went to get my 3rd copy of the game. It also did not work.
In our day of age Google has become a proven tool for information; be weary of what you believe. It appears many others are also having issues with "Empire at War". Luckily I was able to get it to play, once.
The game was "kinda" cool. The space battles were "ok" yet the option to view the action througha "cinematic view" was _VERY_ cool! Other then that single POV there wasn't many other strong points.
The GUI is "clunky" and there's many bugs even after Lucas Arts issued 2 patches within 3 days of the initial launch. The ground game is slow and grueling. Far from something you'd expect of a realtime strategy game. At lesat i had my armada of Victory Class Star Destroyers to patrol the galaxy!
The problem here is the game DOES NOT WORK! STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME! BE WARNED!
Ten days in my possesion and upwards of 4 copies I am getting "Original disc could not be found or authenticated." when attempting to play. This is such an issue that Lucas Arts is refusing to take calls via their phone lines which generally serve to assist with mechanical issues of their products. I had remained on hold with Lucs Arts near 80 minutes (I have mulitple lines at work) and not a single person ever came on the line prior to their system droping me out of the queue and disconnecting me.
To make matters worse, I had been an avid gamer within "Star Wars Galaxies" for over two years which amounted to Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts employing an act of fraudulent marketing practices to bolster their sales. This "fraud" is referd to as the NGE.
I had recieved a full refund from SOE for their failed efforts to bilk their consumers. Many others also recieved refunds.
Word of warning, be wary of anything that's marketed with an attached "Star Wars" lable on it. You may very well be another victim.
Luckily, I still have "Empire Strikes Back" and "Star Wars" when I need an honest to goodness fix for theatrical sci-fi.
Take care, see you in EVE and may the force be with you.

I'm thinking of purchasing Empire at War, I hear its darn good (especially the fleet battles), but time will tell I guess.

The fleet battles are the game high point. It is on a 2d battle field with limitd scale.
The space conflicts was the _ONLY_ reason why I purchased the game. The map for glactic control is kinda cool and feels like a board game.
The best part about the game is issuing a command during a space battle then view the action through the cinematic POV. This feature allows for those creative types to reinvent Star Wars.
Get fraps if you're an indie film hobiest!!
** Not sure how "remaining on hold" to be hung up on is answering anthing. Myabe you would like to elaborate?

I didn't have any problems with installing it nor running it. It seems as though the copy protection and such are pretty strict, so before you launch check your taskbar for any programs that the game might be blacklisting.
I generally really like this game. The 2D-ness of the space battles don't bother me really and I think just that is part of the appeal of the game: It's simple. --------------------

I didn't have any trouble installing it or playing it at all, but it is kind of underwhelming.

Make sure you havent got any emulators and stuff open like antiblaxx. Then load up the game without the disk press srart game and when it asks for the disk insert it and then press retry.
If it doesnt work remove and try again usually works after 3-4 attempts. |

This is why CD copy protection is BS.
All it does is hassle you, and yet it doesn't make it any harder to hack the program. Its often easier to break the protection than to install the game.
For example, Starforce protection is known to completely break Windows XP sometimes (its technically a rootkit, like Sony's) and also screw up CD-ROM drives. It takes me 20 seconds to bypass.

and if all else fails image cd 1, download curerom use CureRom lite(auto enable) and repeat the steps I said earlier but this time use the image instead of inserting cd and mount with Dtools and all emu options on. Rinse repeat 3-4 times and it will work. |

Any game where you need to remove the disk insert the disk and remove it multiple times is too much hastle in my opinion. I try to avoid games with uber strict copywright protection beacause of this, or just download a no cd ***** its legal if I own the game :).

This problem is so widespread that Lucas Arts has refered EVERYONE to produce a "secure ROM anlysis" and forward it directly to "secureROM".
It appears that Lucas Arts is no longer supporting their own software. :(
You know even though I am dealing with this grief from Lucas Arts I still want to play it. Afterall, I DID pay $54.xx USD for this game!!!

Copy protection is the second most useless invention ever, just behind the nuclear bomb, since software piracy has evolved from being that "friend of a friend" who copies his games to sell to others for a symbolical sum, to taking advantage of high speed internet connections to SHARE CD images of games without profit.
Honest Joe who bought his game and wish to share it with a friend is not much of a problem, he is in fact the only person that is still buying PC games, and by implementing copy protection THAT IS LIKELY TO CONFLICT with legit systems you are ultimately shoving your last source of income down a cliff.
