I see so many posts with "wtfpwned" and just "pwn" or "pwnd". I get the wtf but wtf does the rest mean? I arrived into online gaming a bit later than most of you guys and it's like you're talking another language.

Edited by: Drizit on 26/02/2006 06:59:36 I did get the impression of pwnd being a variant of owned but I couldn't be sure. There are so many variants of original words going around that it's hard to tell which belongs to what.
The story I found says it comes from pink slip racing where you became the 'owner' the car you beat.
And using 3 instead of e is really lame. Reminds me of a primary school kid who still hasn't got the hang of which way round letters go and still writes their 'S' and 'N' backwards. Kids like that are still learning the alphabet. But I guess that figures
@ Fal Azira'phale: The Eve distionary is only the shorthand that's used for eve objects. It doesn't have any of that kiddie talk in it.

Like most things orginating from the internet either you go with it or don't. It doesn't really matter. And like all shallow things, it's ok to like it and use it. Just don't believe in it.

I think a translator isn't needed for that one
We all use the internet shorthand. TBH, IMO or IMHO, IIRC and others is common shorthand used in many forums by all ages. I'm not sure about FTW though, never come across that one before.
This 'leet' talk is different though, it's not shorthand and uses a lot of terms that don't make sense. I recall the term Leet as being a derivative of Elite but there's nothing elite about deliberately spelling words wrong or in a way that makes it hard for people to understand I think it makes you look a complete idiot, but there again, I'm 46 years old and been on the internet for over 15 years so what do I know (15 years, damn, I must get some sleep soon ) With the advent of cheaply available broadband, internet gaming has taken on a life of it's own and this leet talk has escalated to language all on it own, mostly because even those who write it don't really know what it means. I do remember some people posting on forums some years ago in mixed upper and lower case letters thinking it was cool but in the forums I visited way back then, they were soon chased off by constant jibes and such from others. They were considered children who deliberately came in to cause flame wars.
The general rule then was, if you had a violent reaction to a post rather than a general difference of opinion with the posters views, you just didn't answer. Mods permabanned anyone who started a flame war or deliberately caused one and "nettiquette" was more fervently adhered to.
The leet talk we see now is most often associated with computer games and therefore the younger generation, (I won't say kids because I know there are older people here who use it). What I want to know is: Has it a real purpose or is it just to look cool even though they don't really know what it means.

It did actually serve a purpose once.
To my knowledge 1337(leet) speak was once a way for warez sharers, script kiddies, and possibly genuine hackers to get around "flag" terms(keywords in chat clients that would alert the wrong person), and still be able to communicate their intentions to each other. It evolved from there into something kids would use to look "133t" on the Internet.
Since then, regular people have kind of adopted l337ish words like pwn3d, mainly just to be goofy.
Just in case you got confused with some of those terms:
Script Kiddy: Someone, usually a teenager, who uses scripts made by real hackers for malicious purposes in order to screw with people on the Internet. I was once one of them, but the leet speak stuff came a bit after my time.
Warez: Pirated software. Back before programs became as large as they are, and before big peer 2 peer networks, people would share programs through e-mail and over IRC and such.

Actually, L33t talk came from back in the dawn of the internet. Hackers use to use it as a sorta ghetto code to disguise what they were typing. Then when gaming got popular and hackers moved into the gaming community to exploit the software ( Birth of IGE ). They started using this code lingo more openly and n00bs started picking up on it. It has grown from there and evolved but back in the day it was truly the language of the ELITE.

pwnd, to the best of my ability means owned, but not sure, thats what I translate it as... Never thought to ask corp for fear of looking like a newb
For all my fellow peoples with the fancy book learning and such, Dosen't this sound like something from (I think this is the right book) 1984 in which one of the main character's friends is re-writing the dictionary to make it "smaller" and "easier" ?

You are correct.
The exact origins are debated heavily, but the most common belief is to a Warcraft map that the original makers of the game had a typographical error in the map explanation where instead of "owned" they typed "pwned" by mistake. It was subsequently corrected in an update patch, but it had been so heavily ingrained into the WC community that it stuck.
I've heard other origins (UT, SC, etc etc), but the earliest and most common one I've found is that WC map.

Edited by: Naleb Cilani on 27/02/2006 15:29:29 The version of "pwned" I believe in is after a fight/duel or something trivial in UO, someone hastily typed "pwned" instead of "owned" after the kill which stuck around due to the spectators/gankers involved. Also it's similar to an old Diablo story where someone asked a rogue "How are you?" and the rogue responded, "I'm pk" when he meant "I'm ok" and then everyone there began avoiding the rogue

Well, 1337 speak (1337 -> leet -> elite) is quite old by now and has a few reasons to exist :-) One is to impress one's peers with how cool you are. That generally works only on AOL nowadays. Another reason is to prevent outsiders from understanding what's being said, or at least flush them out into the open when they go "What? What did you say? What does this mean?".
But basically the leet speak moved from the wannabe-hacker community to the clueless-AOL-kiddies community long time ago and by now I doubt if anyone with working brain cells is using it seriously. Doesn't mean it can't be fun, though.
For an introduction I recommend the story of Romeo and Julliet retold in leet speak:

I guess there's something to this subliminal learning after all. I went straight to the second letter and surprised myself in that I could actually read 95% of it. All these years of scorn at the people who used this in intnernet chat rooms and forums over the years and they probably actually helped me to learn it.
@ Zaldiri. I was looking into car registrations a while ago trying to find one of those private reg plates. Not sure if you're from UK or not but just in case: The rule is that it has to be 1 letter, up to 3 numbers and then another 3 letters. So someone with a name like Patrick can get a personalised plate with P4DDY on it. My friend suggested U5TFU but unfortunately, they wouldn't allow U or O as a starting letter or I might have considered it. {I get stopped late at night by a cop looking just to annoy people by stopping them for no real reason. Police officer: "I will be taking a note of your registration". Me: "Yes, please do!"}
