I have recently been reading a lot of threads about how TiDi sucks and nodes are crashing all the time. I was wondering when was server hardware last updated? wiki says that
" Sol Blades
Approximately 60 SOL blades, each with two dual-core processors (3.3Ghz CPUs) "
Is this data current? seems rather low power CPUs on todays standards. |

1 cpu might be weak but 60 of those working combined give you some juice. |

Let's just say if a computer ever takes over the world, I'd say there are good chances it might be Tranquility. *removed inappropriate signature* - CCP Eterne |

I think there is allways a not so openly advertised "PLEX for Servers" camapign running. It would shurely benefit everyones game experience. |

You cant just throw money at them and expect server upgrades, thats not how it works, its as much software side as hardware that determines how EvE performs. Give them time, Tranqulity is already one of the most powerful servers in the gaming world but like everything else in IT, its the software that is the key. |

I'm pretty sure wikipedia data on EVE is quite out of date, yeah.
Either way, it's less about the hardware pushing EVE, and more the software. The discrete chunks of information that each server handles (one system=one core IIRC) is more of the issue, and that only gets fixed by some drastic low-level code re-writes that I doubt CCP plans on doing. The risk of having your day ruined by other people is the cornerstone with which EVE was built and we want to keep that (infact, this is much more representative of the consensus opinion within CCP). |

current CCP server room including few ZX spectrum computers connected together (parallel tasking).
DT is just saving all memory to a tape cassette. |

So extended dt is when someone has to spool the tape back in with a pencil? Fluffy Bunny Pic! |

Large battles are handled by a System/360 mainframe, TiDi is simply CCP slowing down the reading of punch cards with player actions to give everyone equal opportunity lag. This is why CCP loves wars during the winter - they get to warm up the ol' thing and don't need to pay the heating bills for the office.
Of course, API requests are routed to a server behind connected with a bunch of 56kbit dial modems duct taped together and clogging up the telephone line - they serve as excellent telemarketing discouragement devices. "Hello sir, may I interest you with an of-" *Screeeeeeeeeeeech-ping-ping-booong-bweeeeeep-eeeek*
On a more serious note - there's more software design bottlenecks in all this than anything so chucking a few more extra CPUs at the problem isn't really a good long-term solution. Is it Hotdrop O'Clock yet?
