 They all struck me as fairly Greco-Roman in origin, but that's pure speculation.

 This must be the thousandth thread on this subject...

 I think that CCP should just release their naming system and put this all to rest.

 Im just gonna have to go with "Latin References", whether it be just latin sounding, or some latin word. I guess that makes the most sense.

 Only one of the ship names is actually Latin in origin:

 Occator = A Minor God of the Roman Goddess Ceres

 The rest are mixed, but mostly Greek in origin:

 Ares = Greek God of War
 Eris = Greek Goddess of Chaos
 Erebus = Greek Primordial God of Darkness
 Oneiros = Greek God of Sleep
 Enyo = Greek Goddess
 Thanatos = Greek Personification of Death
 Nyx = Greek Primordial Goddess of Night
 Astarte = Greek form for the Semetic Goddess Ishtar
 Eos = Greek Goddess of the Dawn
 Helios = Greek Deity, Personification of the Sun
 Nemesis = Greek Goddess of Divine Retribution
 Catalyst = from the Greek word "catalytes"
 Moros = Greek Personification of Impending Doom (it literally means doom). Moros was the son of Erebus and Nyx (neat hey?).
 Obelisk = from the Greek word "obeliskos"
 Thorax = Greek word origins
 Deimos = Greek personification for Dread
 Lachesis = Greek deity, one of the Three Fates

 Ishkur = Sumerian God
 Ishtar = Akkadian/Persian God

 Taranis = Celtic God of Thunder
 Tristan = Cornish Folk Hero

 Viator = A 4th Century Catholic Saint

 Soltuer = Could be translated from French as "Sol-killer" or "Sun-killer"

 Any ship not here I haven't been able to find an etymology for, but that means it's probably made up. If you look at the development of the names it seems that the first Gallente ship names were made up, then the first T2 ships came from a variety of sources. Then the most recent ships to be released have all been Greek deities.

 I still find it interesting that the Caldari ships are types of birds....all except the scorpion which is in the family of spiders.

 Never understood why they called it a Scorpion....I guess it sounds better then Albatros.

 Have you ever SEEN a picture of a scorpion? They have a big damn tail with a stinger that curls up over their backs, just like the ship! Originally by: TIvian Never understood why they called it a Scorpion....I guess it sounds better then Albatros.

 Caracal is a cat.

 but in general caldari warships have a predatory reference.

 as for non combat(no clue how the hauler became badger).
 Charon is the Ferryman of the Dead
