I play Gallente and I have just trained the destroyers skill, and I was wondering since the skill apparently isn't race specific(it's simply called "destroyers") if I can operate any destroyer no matter which race it's associated with. In other words; can I buy and operate Amarr, Caldari and Minmatar destroyers just as well as the Gallente destroyer ?
Thanks in advance.

Ok thanks. And on the same note...sorta - am I screwed destroyer-wise with my Gallente Catalyst ? I don't see many setups for this ship. Is it sub-par compared to the other race's destroyers ? Perhaps someone has a link to a good pve/rat Catalyst setup ?
Thanks

all the destoryers are great, they are just under used so not many set ups around.. Proving natural selection and Charles Darwin wrong since 1981.

The Catalyst is a good ship, as far as destroyers go, but I'll leave the for yourself to discover.
Just go with how you would fit a frigate, only more guns. 125mm work well, and if you still got tracking problems, try 75mm. Should take down frigs in a few volleys. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cascade للللللللiss NAVY |

Edited by: Kayl Breinhar on 27/02/2006 11:16:38 Destroyers are really nothing but gunboats. They're honestly not really too functional outside of L1 missions past running picket duty for fleets, defending larger ships from Frigate-sized ships and smaller targets.
Considering the ship itself costs 650-700k, plus easily a minimum of about 200-1m+ to equip to become respectable, that's just money that's better saved saving up for a Cruiser.

Also destroyers are slow and boring. Even the slowest tech 1 frigates outrun the destroyers.

destroyers are as big as cruiser's ofc thier gonna be slower than frigs
as for cost....it can be 10mill+ to kit a minmater thrasher with T2 guns
but can solo under skilled cruiser's

More destroyer hate? Say it ain't so!
I love my Catalyst for the massive damage output (for a small ship) and tin-can hull. Most folks only seem to use the destroyer as a stepping stone to Cruiser, and a short one at that, but one big advantage of the Catalyst is that it can have more than twice the damage output of a frigate with an identical skill set + Destroyer skill.
It's outclassed for some L2 missions, but suitable for many others, and will clear those much faster than a Cruiser. Just watch your damage carefully, and be ready to warp out at a moment's notice, rep and try again.
They are also very very cheap. I can routinely buy one at Gold level insurance prices, and insure them at Platinum. And you don't need a lot of named gear to make 'em work.

The Amarr Destroyer for example, can insta-omg-wtf-pwn-age-lol-nub-rofloma interceptors and other tacklers. Other than that, its sig radius is such that taking on cruisers is difficult.
You could get a good setup for 5mil including destroyer, so its not to expensive, since you may need to spend 10-20mil to get a cruiser + good fitting. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

I have a destroyer and I intend to get the tech 2 one aswell. Atm I use 5x blasters and 2x 75mm rails 1x rocket launcher with defenders.
MED: 1x AB, 3x small shield ext
LOW: 1x power diagnostic
My intention is to use 1x MWD and 7x blasters instead of the other crap also a web instead of a small shield ext and maybe change the other 2 shield ext to cap rechargers or trackings or what ever.
When I get the tech 2 one I gonna go 6x missile launchers 2x NOS muhahahhahhah. Then a WEB, scrambler and MWD and a cap recharger/booster. Then u gonna die if ur in a frig or interceptor.

I'm a fairly neophyte pilot myself, but I find my Destroyer FABULOUS for L1 and L2 kill missions. I use 4 150mm rails and 2 Light Ions. The rails engage things out to 35km and the occasional frigate that slips past the 150's earns the attention of the Light Ions. I've found that most all the NPC ships at Level 2 can't fire accurately at 35km, and they can't close with me, either. Admittedly, once in awhile I warp in to a close-range encounter and that gets a tad ugly, but that's what warp drives are for.
I do wonder what other people use, but as for me, I'm going to train in Controlled Bursts and such to fill those other two slots with another 150 and another Light Ion, and love life.
I am a bit curious as to what other people put in their low slots, though - I've got one armor plating and two speed-for-cargo mods in there (to keep things from closing with me) but I feel like I could do better. It doesn't seem like there are any destroyer-class afterburners to help me get away from an assault quickly, or I'd slap one of those in.

There is its the 1mn AB but sinse destroyers weight so much the acceleration and max boost of the 1mn is garbage for a destroyeras is any AB/MWD for midway ships like destroyers and BC's they just weigh to much to get the full effect of the AB/MWD catalyst should have like a small armor rep 200mm plate and like a cap power relay and then throw likea cap recharger and like 2 other random things in mid then i dunno 7x 125mm rails in high or light ion blasters depending on the play style you like

just a note i see your using a Cormorant FYI the Flycatcher is the umm weakest of all the interdictors.. yes admittedly still hella strong ship that will send any frig/inty packing its sig radius is still to big and its overall firepower is sub-par compared to say the sabre or T2 amaar one

With a few skills you can fit a 10MN AB to a destroyer, giving it a top speed of about 1400m/sec until it quickly runs out of cap. Almost no PG left, so I'm not sure what you could then use it for, other than ram-raiding people, but I'm sure someone will find an amusing use for it :)

10mn AB on a destroyer? better use a 1mn mwd - get the same speed and uses far less pg ...
btw - check out the "lolarant" (sp?) - very interesting setup _________________________________________

Try flying a Trasher with 250mm arty, a Defender for those pesky missile users, and an AB, webber and shield booster in mids. Fit whatever you like in low slot.
Stay at 30+ km and blast away at hapless rats. They will hate you and you will laugh.

I am loving my Catalyst. My skills are not that high but so far it has been a very fine ship, much better I think than a frigate.
I have it outfit right now with 8 x 125mm Carbine Railguns in the highs. 2 x Shield Extenders in the mids 2x Shield Rechargers, 1 x Armor Repair in the lows.
Once I train up my skills some more I want to gradually upgrade to tier 2 gear.

What's the engagement range on a 8x125 Catalyst? Maybe I should downgrade my 150's....

Optimal range on 8 x 125 is about 14km. I used the carbines since they were cheap and I could manage to mount all 8 and the shield mods I wanted.
So far I haven't noticed a problem once they get in close but I have only been flying the destroyer over the weekend. I am planing on trying an all Blaster setup and a mixed Rail/Blaster setup to see how it performs.

Do you find loot gathering a pain in the butt without an AB? I think it would drive me batty.
