I am rather new, and I intend to focus on mining. Most of my mining is going to be done solo, and since I don't have alot of experience, I wanted to see what people think.
Right now I have an Iteron, and was planning on aiming for a mining barge, and just staying in 0.9 and up space. Would it be better to aim for a combat ship, and outfit it to mine with combat drones for defense and go to lower sec space?
I'm Gallente, and would like to stick with Gallente ships if at all possible, any recommended ships/set-ups would be great.

You'll get a better yield in lower sec space. Your best bet would be to find a small corp to join and go mine with them. That way if it's all organised properly, you'll have some cover from combat pilots (who you should pay for their services but that's between you and them) and can go into much lower sec areas.
Going to have to redo this when I get my Ferox :( |

Edited by: trust trd on 27/02/2006 23:12:38 Gallente does not really have a good mining ship and Mining barges are not Gallente so if you want to mine you will be training outside of Gallente. (well there is the Apoc, but thats a lot of initial training)
I suggest you train for either the Osprey or Scythe first as they get huge mining bonuses and are quick to train. If you like mining that much then look into the mining barges.

*cough* Dominix, just remember to pull in the mining drones and kick the combat drones out of the airlock if,nay, when rats come calling.

Edited by: Aneeda on 28/02/2006 00:17:08 Stick with the mining barge route. The covetor is the tech 1 ship to shoot for if you plan on hanging around 0.9 and up space. With good combat drone skills you can eventually drop down to 0.5 and mine kernite without getting armor penetration on rat attacks.
Your eventual problem with solo mining won't be rats... it will be ore thieves. Once you outgrow your secure containers and find the need to jettison your ore... you will be relying on other peoples good will to not steal from you while you go and retrieve your industrial for ore pick up.

As a noob Gallente miner, I use the Vexor and jetcan mine. A small shield booster has been all I've needed to tank the rats in .5 while my drones kill them. Granted, I haven't been mining for very long but I've yet to be the victim of somebody jacking my jetcan.
HI Miner II x4
MID Small shield booster, AB, Cap Recharger
LOW Co-proc x3, Basic Cargo Expander

To avoid the ore thieves just find a quiet sector to work in. As for ships I would say go for atleast a reteiver and jetcan with it. With saying in .9 space though you are limiting yourself a lot with what you can mine. I can take my retiever out in .7 and sometimes in .6 without any issues. I use drones for cover, and I got a small shield booster on so I can tank a little if need be.

Edited by: D''onryu Shoqui on 28/02/2006 11:15:14 go for a covetor i have one it it rocks for mining ,ive been staying to 0.9 space so far until i have a little money saved up and im quite efficient solo ,i have around 5.6k cargo space with 18% expanders so can carry around 15k of plag a trip and with insta bookmarks to the belt and back to the station ,im almost as quick as when my friend is hauling for me.
btw i dont have that great skills and i have on my ship 3 strip miner I's , medium shield booster and space for 5 drones ,so i think when i try lower sec mining soon it should be easy.

Solo mining in a barge is easy, you just need fairly decent drone skills now since the drone bay nerf to make up for the fact you'll be using 5 lights rather than 5 meds.
I generally bum around in 0.5 or 0.6 with my retriever when solo, although I've had to fit a small repper on it due to poor drone skills (and use of lights....).
I will say this tho: A mega with 7 t2 lasers can outmine a retriever, therefore I'd train for a bs if you dont intend to get a covetor in the future (although, they DO pay for themselves rather nicely), as it'll allow you do tank any rats no trouble at all, and you can go off and do missions when you want a break.

I mine in a Brutix set up like so:
High: 7 x Miner II
Med: 1 x Langour Drive Inhibitor (webber) 1 x Y-58 Hydrocarbon 1 x ML-3 (asteroid scanner) 1 x Small CL-5 Emergency Shield Overload
Low: 3 x Photonic CPU Enhancers 2 x Type "D" Cargo Expanders (22.74%)
600ish m3 cargo space
Drones: 2 x Hammerheads, 2 x Hobgoblins, 4 x Miner I (50m3)
With Mining 4, Astrogeology 3 and my mining drones I pull in close to 630ish m3/minute (I stagger one of the mining lasers so that I don't lose ore). When I get another rank of Electronics, I should be able to ditch one of the CPU enhancers and get another expander so I don't have to stagger my lasers (that way I can do something else without worrying about missing the cycle).
I am actually leveling up another character to be my primary miner and using the existing skills on this guy for now to make some money in the interim. Brutix is a great mining ship though if you outfit it right, is my point.

The covetor is king of T1 mining. It takes a while to train but it more than pays for itself, especially with T2 lasers. So far ive found it strong enough to handle most 0.3 serp spawns, and i mine solo most of the time with it in said 0.3 system... I'm a bit wreckless but it is the best T1 mining ship.

Back when I solo mined, I used to do either the Retriever and jet can mine, and before I had the skills I would just fly back to station and come back out pop the rats and go back - but that took awhile. I was capable of mining solo in .6 with a Retriever and my Drones could take out anything that came into the belt (NPC). I was very rarely stolen from since I was in a virtually empty system.
As for not having the Retriever, I was Caldari so I used the Cormorant to mine. EP-S Gaussians in all the Hi-slots and jet can mine. Did very well for myself. ------------- www.eve-files.com/media/corp/20thb/Abra-Banner.jpg[/img]

dominix for deep low sec mining
my current setup is high: 6miner II mid: 5x named Cap recharger low: 1 named or T2 large armor rep, 3 rat specific hardeners, 3CPR's
with my skills it gives 30 crock per second w/o drones, and more than enough cap to run the large rep constantly. With good drone skill you can chain some bs rats while you are mining and make double the isk.
mining in a dom, noone in their right mind will steal your ore in high sec either. 1 scrambler in mids and you can tear them apart with your drones.
The real key though is to join a corp, as someone already said. I went a long time without a corp, and joining one really makes the game more enjoyable.

a domi with maxed skills can pull with lv 5 mining, astrogeology , battleship lv5 and mining drones lv5 and tech 2 mining drones can pull 903.125 m3 with 1 mining upgrade module and a very good tank and you can hold 2 waves of hevy combat drones that can take a most bs spawns in 0.0 easily

Here are some suggestions
Any Race: Get your mining skills up FAST, and go find/purchase XeCl drilling lasers. For small ships, they can't be beat(48 CPU units is the lowest, and you get 47 base mineral out of them). Rebekka Ammund drives a Caldari DD with 5 of them, soon to be 6 when she gets the CPU cost down with electronics skills. That gives you a DD with 5 XeCls(235 mineral units/minute...more depending on skills) and room for 3 weapons!! You'll definately need to use the Med and Low slots to augment, but not a bad setup. Caldari: Rebekka also uses a Badger II shield/capacitor pumped like crazy to mine in .7 space and above...you know those times when you want peace and quiet and LOTS of Veldspar. A miner II or deepcore with crystal, along with a small smartbomb will keep you going for about 40 minutes of "fill up the cargo-bay" time...and the rats in those areas tend to like to close within 3Km...hence the smartbomb. You don't even have to move far to collect the cans!
