Can anyone explain to me why a guy would want his avatar to be a woman. The 'if I have to look at them all day' is a load of rubbish it is rare you need to look at your own image too often so that is a poor excuse. Icould understand if it is to get an edge over other guys but then you are treading on dodgy ground.

Because people do not need to adhere to real life gender patterns in a game.
Aside from that, it's a fact that female MMOG characters get a -lot- more handouts then male characters.

A lot use it for deception. The tales of corps getting robbed by attractive females shortly after retail release were widespread and, to me anyway, hilarious. .

The more interesting question is why do you care?
Are you driving around EVE looking for a date?
You're not really an asteroid-mining, space-pirate killing interstellar tradesman in real life either; but you play one in EVE.
If it makes such a huge difference to you, you're the one with the problem.

Becouse.. This... Is... A...
GAME
Thats like asking why a person would choose to play a pirate in the game, if hes not a pirate in real life. Or asking a Warcraft player why he chooses to play an Orc when he clearly is a human.
Ohh and why does everybody ask if the men with Girl Avatars are cross dressers or homosexual ? Open your mind guys. We are not bound by our real life chains in games, if we were we all be playing games of ppl playing games in low litt rooms, drinking (insert preferred drink here) :P

Well I just can say this about it...
Why not? I have to interact with her every day, players fall in love for her and she gets special treatment... and on the other side, why you need to play with a big tough guy, with muscular body and a mean face? maybe you feel attracted to them? But just for the recordà
I felt really weird when I got a stocker that felt in love with my character... He force me to pod kill him...

Seriously though, why the fuss?
If players want to wear space drag to get a free lunch then fair play to them. They're just taking advantage of a bunch of priapismic social misfits who think that a female avatar isn't a 35-year-old virgin playing from his parent's basement and is actually that pixellated goddess staring back at them. It's good business sense. Wood elves always get free buffs and all that. More fool the ones who fall for it.
As for the sexual aspect, again, who cares? Whatever lights your candle. Like sexual preference (or deviancy) has any bearing on a computer game. Heaven forbid there are people out there who are *shock horror!* *** or transexual. I've got a good mind to burn my mouse in protest.
Whether they're female or not it doesn't matter either way. It's like the old saying goes...

To me the reasoning doesn't even go that deeply.
It was a simple process: 1) Which race do I want to play? 2) Which bloodline? 3) Which avatar looks cool?
It's just another step in the customization process. No different than choosing a particular ship because of the way it looks or designing your cloak/cape in UO, or choosing your coporation's logo.
If Torath wants to take the Avatar and assume it represents something tangible in the real world, that's his own delusional problem. My avatar doesn't represent me any more than the ship I fly represents my car, or the station I dock at represents my house, or the asteroid field represents the old people I mug on the street.
If he's offended by the thought of male players with female avatars, he's probably insecure in his own sexuality.

It obviously must mean something, after all I spend hours in 'therapy' trying to work out why my parents chose my name, but then I had to then go into some more 'therapy' because I got stressed about how my parents could have spent so little time in the choosing of my name, and then I got addicted to subscription drugs because I was depressed, and then I had to have more therapy.......
It's a game! Choose what you like I'm just upset that the avatars are humanoid, what about some kind of weird creature things.....

Bah, why did people like playing Tomb Rider? Because they liked staring at her boxy ass? I think NOT.
The idea of a female with the male attraction to dangerous profession is rare in real life, that is why it is coveted so.
The whole Femme Fatale syndrome, the woman taking charge, the chick that doesn't take ****, they are succesful because they are uncommon, I mean, its ok to be a burly caldari male, whom you expect to be great at combat, ruff in bed, but why do people pretend they are old, or ugly?
Maybe the people that are women are all closeted homo's or crossdressers (sure ). Even if it WAS so, why would that bother you, its their business not yours.

Well, I stick to a male avatar, but I sometimes play female avatars for one reason. I have found that when playing male I tend to project alot of my RL ways of beeing onto that char, I never do with female avatars.
Wierd? Maybe, but then again, I don't really care

I'm thinking of creating a Male Character
Just for variety, opposite sex Character can be good if you Roleplay, less likely to imprint your usual personality onto it
I'm Female, but thats about it for similarities with my Character Pity, She has a better haircut and job than me

Intresting you would get upset that men play women ... but what about the women that play men? I've seen it a few times... women get sick of getting hit on. RL has similar things going on ... if you never realized that you might be in a world of shock Also.. playing the opposite sex helps open your mind to a bit usually. A lot of guys can be sexist pigs ... put them in woman's shoes and I'd be willing to bet they'd change after a while.
Open your mind a bit :) Learn a little. The cute fox you see in the mall might not really be a fox, but a hound
You can do anything you set your mind to. |

Interesting point, Silinary. My main character in Asheron's Call was male, because I got so sick and tired of people trying to give unwanted things/unneeded help to my first (female) character. I haven't noticed nearly the same kind of thing in either Earth and Beyond or here, which is nice.

This topic has come up on every game forum I've looked at. Some guys just like to play chicks. It means nothing 99.9% of the time. I've never played a female character, but that's me.
Interesting thing about Eve is, it's a heavily male game. My wife is the only RL female character I personally know - all the others are RL males.

So my intitial question has come back with a few answers, including many about my own personal issues.
There are many good points in defence of the using of female avatars when you are a guy and even using a male when you are female.
There seems to be plenty of comments banded about on roleplaying and how it doesn't mater as it isn't real life. Well if there are roleplayers out there which I think there are few answer me this. If a big burly Caldari fighter did decide he liked the look of your avatar and made advances then how do you react? A) roleplay the situation whatever? B) go against you principles of roleplaying and tell them you are a guy?
You want it I got it....erm unless I sold it, then some one else has it!?! :/

... You're reading far too much in the simple response; no one said the RP answer to the clumsy advances of the 'big burly Caldari fighter' must be positive, non?..
That said, to muddle the issue even further... 'tis not uncommon for RL girl with female avatar to claim she's a guy in RL, simply because it's the quickest and most effective way to get unwanted guys off her back. So, might want to take everything you hear around the game with double pinch of salt, i guess.... :s

If we have a burly guy avataar that is really a girl, who is tired of getting hit on and thus decides to hit on a pretty girl avataar, which is really a guy, but she does so thinking its a girl because all the being hit on raised bisexual tendencies in her is she really getting what she wants or is it all an elaborate mindgame? And what about the RL male? Should he consider the advances or think that because the avataar is male the person behind should be also? Who is roleplaying and who isn't who is coming out and who is having fun? why does it really matter? but most importantly.....
can I have your stuff?

I am female but i chose a male character as my first avatar not because i am a bodybuilding bull-dyke but because Eve is a role playing game. Conclusion = it dosnt make a difference what your avatar looks like and i cant believe what an epic all you plebs are making of it.
I chose a female character with big boobs in Tomb Raider.... scandal

Ok I roleplay not just in EVE but in RL as well. I frequently play female characters. For the simple reason of it's more challenging. As a male it is really simple to play a male and your own personality shows through more but as I am playing a character I have to put more thought into it.
As for the how do you handle being hit on simple you RP it, just as you would in RL roleplaying. which I've done several times. It's only a matter of how well you can seperate reality from the game ---- Don't befriend a dwarf with learning difficulties..... It's not big and it's not clever |

Yet you still joined in.
Anyway, I think it is time to come clean, I have no real care as to what your avatar is or looks like, I merely wanted to see what the response would be like and see if it went the way of all the other posts. well my theory is proved and as such I wish to end the debate. Male or female you all die the same!!
You want it I got it....erm unless I sold it, then some one else has it!?! :/

Well, its that simple for me. And if pvping and kicks someone¦s male ass you can further humiliate the person by saying he got his ass kicked by a girl ;P

Well... a year or so I go I used to play Everyquest. My daughter thought it was kewl so she started playing (she is 12). She started a cute little elf toon. Every now and then I would log on her char and see how she was doing. Most times she could not move do to the fact the was overloaded with stuff other players gave her and.. she never asked for a single item or piece of plat.
go figure....
Why do guys play female toons... ummm. Well why do some guys like guys? nuff said
