I know that the Hardeners offer better % to the specific damage type. But what is the general rule of using each? I noticed there is an activation time on the hardeners, so I assume I have to activate it like an armor repair module. So if I am using armor repair using these would drain my resources much faster. So I have been using the membranes. Any advice would be appreciated. I am new to using armor assistance modules, have been shield tanking.

For PVE hardeners are better as most npcs don't do all dmg types so you pick dual hardeners and laugh at them.
PVP... 3x membranes give very nice resistances and they don't need cap, so even if your cap vanish you still have some resistances and maybe you survive long enough to jump/dock/backup arrival
I use no guns... i smack to death. |

I tend to go for Membranes over hardeners myself (cause what use is 2 kinetic hardeners when the guy is shooting you with explosives).
Membranes tend to take more skill (skill points) to be effective. The benefits are nice though (good global based resists, no actual cap use (and in some cases.. no powergrid/cpu use either). A pair of active hardeners will give you more resists to 1 type than 3 passive ones.. but there are no global armor active hardeners that I know of (there are for shields).

so stick with the membranes/passive? I am not concerned with PvP. This setup is for missions and or rat hunting.

If you know what damage the NPcs deal ahead of time, which you should, use the relevant active hardeners.

If you're using anything bigger than a frig, cap shouldn't be a problem. If you're using a frigate or destroyer, stick with the passives. Whatever works, works.

The cap usage is so minute, that on anything larger than a frigate, it's a non-issue.
Respect the Domi. Or else.
