Moved From General Disc. - Kaemonn
Greetings.
I currently have this computer:
1.6ghz Northwood P4 CPU. 512mb DDR 333mhz RAM.
This is too slow for me at the moment. I cannot have 10 ships on my screen without FPS being as low as 2. I am planning on upgrading my computer to:
3.0ghz Prescott P4 CPU. 1gb DDR 400mhz RAM.
Do you think this will do the trick? What do you estimate my FPS would be in a battle of 20 ships? I want a confirmation that this will not suck, since I don't like to spend money on nothing.
Regards, Dedekind.

If you're swapping out that much why not just move to an A64?

Hmmm. Mainly because that way I would also have to buy a new motherboard?

Oh, your current motherboard supports the Prescott and faster RAM?
In that case you could stick with the P4. I personally would move to an A64--its only another 100 bucks. But if you want to stay on a budget, you can keep the motherboard and get a P4.

Get yourself a decent graphics card with decent sized on-board memory, it will make all the difference also.
I have just bought myself a Nvidia 6600GT it's a bargain and the card performs very very well indeed.
Oh by the way, if your going for a new motherboard, if you can afford it, get a board with PCI-E as most graphics manufacturers are moving towards PCI-E cards.
Great sig, just it's over 24000kbs :) - Cortes Edit: Was over 24000kbs ;) - Dan |

Edited by: keepiru on 01/03/2006 10:34:56 Yeah, the power of the gfx card doesent really count for that much, but some texture memory is useful... no need for anything more than a 6600, its the perfect card for eve.
Dede, that looks like a low-cost way to upgrade. If youre on a budget like i seem to understand, i guess you might as well stick to P4 :)
Your FPS will very much depend on what res you run EVE @, but that spec looks fine to me.
Edit: just to give you an idea, my lappie has a 2.8GHz desktop P4 and an fx5600go 64Mb, and some pitifully slow ram. Its ok with 20 ships, so long as i run in fullscreen... if i run in windowed mode it doesent like it too much. ------------- Please fix the stacking algorythm, it's a disgrace!

Have a system very close to what you considering. P4 3.0Ghz 1024mb Dual Channel DDR400 MSI 865 Neo2 Platinum motherboard 256mb GF6600GT Not the best by a long shot-But have no problems at all in eve. Even with FSAA etc on can happily have screen full of ships. You should do fine :)

If you can upgrade it without replacing the mobo, I'd suggest just buying the ram at first and see how much that will improve things before considering to buy a new cpu.
Also don't forget about the graphics card, as pointed out already. _____________________________________ meep meep |

I'd also suggest overclocking your current Northwood; the original northwoods could overclock drastically if the RAM is set to run at a slower speed, and if your cooler is good enough to cool a Prescott it can cool any Northwood

Edited by: Dedekind on 01/03/2006 16:11:09 Greetings.
I thank you all for your replies. I have ordered the items I said I was considering. Let's see how it goes. Hopefully my computer will not burn or something (I'm always afraid of something like that happening whenever I open up my computer).
I'm planning on selling my old CPU and RAM for a little amount of money, so I don't think I'll go into any overclocking experiments .

It is good to hear that someone has a similiar system working just fine.
And by the way, I have that exact graphics card many of you have been mentioning: (Sparkle) Geforce 6600gt. It's only 128mb though .

That's ok. the 256 has faster memory, iirc, but you dont need the extra vram for eve (though it could be useful in other games, depending on the resolution and strenmght of AA).
Good luck installing, and enjoy your new rig ------------- Please fix the stacking algorythm, it's a disgrace!
