I interested in how I can maximize the speed of my internet connection.
Currently my family has a partial T1 setup with 512kbs incoming/outgoing which comes with a package of 8 phone lines. We are going to try out a 1000ms incoming DSL line pretty soon, but that's besides the point. The T1 line goes into a hub where 4 lines are being used, 3 going directly to computers, and 1 to another wireless hub. My personal computer, and two other computers are connected to this wireless hub.
At the moment, the max I can download for an extended period of time is 59 kb/s. I'm sure, but this seems horribly low with my given connection. Also, recently I have been disconnecting from Eve quite a lot, and websites have been taking a while to load.
Is there anything I can do to max my download/connection speed?
Thanks

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but your current line speed is 512 kiloBITS.
1 kilobit = 0.125 kilobytes
512 x 0.125 = 64 kilobytes/sec download
So a consistent download speed of 59 kb/s is pretty decent.
Anyway you can go to ADSLguide to test your true line speed.

What Ebedar said is correct, it's something a lot of people get confused about so just to clarify: Your connection speed is measured in kb/s (small b, kilobits). Your transfer speed is measured in kB/s (big B, kilobytes). There are 8 bits in a byte, so to work out your maximum transfer speed from your connection speed, you can simply divide it by 8: 512/8 = 64 kB/s transfer speed
As Ebedar said, 59kB/s is absolutely fine, seeing as your very rarely going to get your maximum transfer speed (because of line attenuation etc.)

15 euros a month isn't bad at all. You can certainly play any game with that, just no insane torrenting.
Mine is 43 USD a month... the 30k connection is 60 USD.
The best you can get for 15 bucks here is dial-up. The cheapest DSL is like 30 bucks a month.

Yep spot on. The other 5KB making it 64KB/sec is eaten up with TCP overheads.

Okay thanks for all of your input...
It has been very helpful. I think I plan on upgrading to a higher internet speed, becuase I was under the impression that internet in excess of 1000's becomes horribly expensive.
Do you know of any databases or websites where I can find a fast, and cheap broadband provider?

In UK here and got the standard "512k" line. 512kbps download and 256kbps upload
I actually connect at 576Kbps, max dl ive ever got for a decent amount of time is about 61kBps and 30kBps down and up respectively. Realisitically I can get about 55down and 27up when on a good torrent, (uploading at 30 seems to bottleneck the dl to about 45 dunno why).
ú17/month 512k unlimited.

I live in California, and I'm wondering if there are any broadband provider databases so I can find the fastest speed for the best price.
I live in a semi-rural area, and DSL just became available in our area. Putting in the T1 lines was pretty expensive, so I want to make sure I don't waste my money on something subpar.
Thanks again

I apologize for the double post, but...
Right now, I am looking at a DSL provider that is offering 7100mbps/768mbps with 8 static ips for $150 a month. Do you have any suggestions in picking a internet service or provider?
Thanks again
