The only thing I have to say, that hasn't been said already, is that I think everybody should at least try RPing a little. I didn't try it for a long time after I started EVE, and I've been having a LOT more fun ever since I did. -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

An interesting statement to make.
In a roleplay encounter, opposing factions will have various insulting/derisive remarks to make at each other before/during/after a fight...or even just passing each other in the same system. Both parties understand it's all part of the fun, all part of the game.
In a non-roleplay encounter, you get people slagging off pirates (or, more accurately, the PLAYER behind the pirate, because to slag off a pirate would imply roleplay) or their enemies, or whatever else. There's no acting to it...the player behind the keyboard is ****ed off and venting.
Who's taking it more seriously?

Roleplaying, either in the open game or in my own head as I go about missions, is part of the fun in the game. As someone pointed out, every missions you do is technically considered a roleplay without getting too deep into the semantics of the word. I don't want a semantic debate, I just want the protien. (three "Cool Points" to whoever tells me what that line is from.) Making an avatar and giving it a personality you want is roleplay. Doing missions is roleplay. You're not actually delivering packages across star systems, you're pretending you are...in effect the same thing, but again, let's not get into that.
Roleplaying is part of the reason I am thuroughly looking forward to the new Bloodlines scheduled for the Red Moon rising patch...excuse me, for January 2006...excuse me, for mid February...excuse me March 2nd. Making a new character and giving that character a personality through their apperance, a history and specific goal through their skills and traits, and even maybe a small backstory to go with them in their Bio (if you're a nerd like me) is all part of the fun.
I have always wanted to roleplay out in EVE, but because of the rather harsh reaction and jarring character breaking comments of most other players I never really get the chance to. I've been browsing around the Roleplay forum and have been "getting in touch" with my character and look forward to participating.
EVE is one of the few MMOs that I can see myself roleplaying in because EVE gives you the most freedomto bee, very literally, whatever you want. If you were an Assassin class character in Ragnarok Online but started putting points into your Int or Vit, you would be a very very useless assassin. Your character would be useless. In EVE, you can learn and master any skill you want and still be proficient in what you want.
I enjoy Roleplaying and personally think that everyone should at least give it a shot. Not necessarily going so far as to speak in the comm channel (chat room, whatever) In Character, but in your head put yourself in that character. It's very fun, relaxing and downright enjoyable.

Wee, we got a role all to ourselves. I am flattered... somewhat. But I have been posting RPG-styled threads long before I was in JF. And most of them had nothing to do with my hatred for the Amarr, disheartedness in Minmatarr politics (esp. Midular), or disrespect for territorialistic standing enclosurists.
You are missing a whole lot of groups:
* Gallante vs Intaki * Caldari inter-corporation warfare * Glamour Syndicate * Pirates vs 'Customers' * EVEnts (SOE, Morduus, Serps)
To the OP: well, if you are that scared about people adding a whole extra layer to the game, then just don't go there. Also don't go to the Library, Alliance & Corp Summit, don't read the Eve-background, don't mess with pirates, etc. etc. etc. As they are all to a certain extend gasp roleplaying! _

Check out the Society for Creative Anachronism. Not so much role-play (at least not in the fantasy / D&D sense) but a very active historical re-enactment group. They do all the arts and crafts side of things but I reckon you'd be interested in the Tourneys. You will need to get in shape though, the swords may be blunted but you can still get injured (maybe learn to make armour first ).
Cheers Gibbah, I hope you have fun with it. It can only add to the game for you and if not then you can just stop. Enjoy.
As far as folk breaking the immersion with ooc chatter you can view contemporary references as if they were contemporary to your character. So if somebody is talking about sports you can just write it off as chatter about the latest jugger match on Pator. A movie or TV show, just the latest Gallente holo vid. If it gets out of hand you can write it off as the ravings of a crash addict. You don't have to say anything in local, it's just a little RP trick you can use on yourself if you have immersion problems.

Same here, really. Some RP adds a lot to PvP, and it's completely reinvigorated the game for me. If you're feeling a bit jaded, I wholeheartedly recommend trying RP - you get to experience the game at a whole new level.
LARPers are still weird, though.

As far as I can remember, the RP channels I am regularly in are Ammatar, Bar VETO, CCDF, and The Summit. Ammatar is really just for a few eccentric friends, and CCDF is basically for any and all Caldaris, although particularly for those who reside within Caldari regions.

No, to say (most) RPers take it seriously is totally off base. It just looks that way, but frankly, that just means that it's actually worth a damn.
Their characters take it seriously in an in-character sense, not the players themselves. You see, my character could be ICly ****ed off, but I'm probably OOCly (out-of-character) smiling at the same time. That's why it's called role-playing and doing it isn't such a stretch, considering that Eve is also in effect a simulation of a dystopian future society.

What scares me is people thinking they aren't playing a role(ie. roleplaying[ie. playing a role other than yourself]) in EVE- or do you actually think you're mining veldspar, flying a spaceship, and capturing large territories of space?
We're all roleplaying to our own degree of acceptability(and comfort) and some higher than others. Some people simply enjoy more immersion than others.
