I could tell you but it would help you find me easier... so... if you want to know 20mill to my wallet and I can show you how to scan belts and such with incredible ease.
used to take me 30 minutes warping from belt to belt, now, I just stop, scan, and warp to my victims.

Alrighty well maybe id be a pal and lower the price a bit, but the method I found yesterday on these forums works great... but its hidden about 20 replys down in one of the 200 posts good luck 8)
Some times it pays to have an incredibly boring teacher, wireless internet, and a laptop 8)

the method listed in the piracy guide is extremely vague and while yes its acurate it does not show HOW. My method uses the scanner like a sniper rifle, letting you know exactly WHAT your scanning and you know EXACTLY whats there.
But like I said its on the forums...somewhere...

yeah took me awhile to get it too, I'm still not as fast as I would like to be. Whenever my corp mate comes hunting with me Im like ok hes somewhere within these 3-4 belts, then over TS "He is in belt seven two!" and Im like wtf.... how fast was that!
I am slowly getting faster though. _________________

Good lord.
OK. There is a flying camera that is part of your ship. It is what you are looking at your ship through, and what actually does the moving around of your view when you left-click drag. What is important about all this is that is what determines the direction of your scanner.
So, if you want to scan a belt, find its icon in space (the overview can help if you add asteroid belts to it - a must for belt piracy imo), place it in the center of your screen (where your ship is basically), narrow the angle down to 5 degrees, and hit the scan button. If you have asteroid belts on your overview, and filter your scanner, you should see the belt and all of its inhabitants. If you dont see the belt listed in the results, you know the center of the screen isnt close enough to the icon.
Hope that helps.

the issue is that the method posted is VAGUE it doesnt go into detail and it doesnt show how to do it quickly and or efficiently.
My method you DONT have to scan at 360, then guess, to 180 and what not, you simply scan A specific easily targeted belt, and you know.
If you dont like me offering the advice for a charge either stop bumping the thread, or post the method I use, since no one has and Im still getting convo's there is a demand.

Edited by: Etar Ip on 03/03/2006 05:29:09 Maybe someone should finally sticky the post regarding using the scanner. It seems to be the biggest mystery to most new and many older players in the game. I can't count how many people I've had the opportunity to teach how to use the scanner. It takes just a little time and effort to learn, but reaps rewards that last the entire time you play EVE.

*sighs*
A'ight peeps, let's have a go.
#1: set your overviewS rigth.
-Notice the plural; yes, I said overviews. At least 3:
OV1: "Combat". However you damn please.
OV2: "Scanning". Only --every ship except shuttles & rookies --Planets --Asteroids --Stations & Gates (optional; I find them useful) --Control towers
OV3: "Hunting". As above, and including --NPCs --Player drones --Cargo cans (the jettinson type, not the secure cans)
Why 3 overviews? 'Cos the more things you scan for, the longer it takes. So, we'll find a ship first (with 'scanning'), then we'll see what he is up to ('hunting'), then we'll... talk to him. *grins*
#2: Scaning.
Simplest piece of cake around.
Foolproof method: (aka 'scanning the belts') -Warp to planet with belts -Do a scan with: --150.000.000 km (roughly an AU) --360 degrees -If no ship: go to next planet -If ship --Scan at 180, random direction (watch the scanning screen and rotate your camera; your ship needs not move) --If no ship turn, if ship narrow to 90 degrees, 60, 30, nail.
Remember: -Use common sense: if a 180 degree scan shows 2 belts, it is usually faster to do two 15 degrees scan (one at each belt), than all the sweep above. -Check for Control Towers, Sations and Gates: if a 180 shows a ship, but none of the belts have him, check the other objects to see if he is there, or at a safespot.
Advanced method: (aka 'scanning the planets') -Look the scanner screen. -Warp to a planet that that has 'many' planets with belts inside the 14au range (note: this takes a bit of practice, since you cannot judge distances that easily on the scanner; looking at the overview helps. It is not possible to do it in every system) -Use the 'foolproof method', but: --Use a 14au range (max scanner range) --Insted of belts, scan for planets.
That is to say: with the 'advanced' method, you will end pointing your camera and doing a 15 (or 5) scan on a planet, and then you know in which planet he is in. Then: warp to that planet, and apply the 'foolproof' method to find him there.
As I said, piece of cake.
Now the subtle part, which is griefers only!
The rest of you do-gooders out there, no peeking!
#3: Hunting.
This will let you know whether the guy: -Is facing NPCs (NPCs show on scanner) -Has 'just' finished NPCing (loot cans) -Is mining (also loot cans)
The miner does not pick up the cans; if they disappear on a second scan, the guy is ratting (you may want to wait and nail him down when he has NPCs on him; your choice, he may ss if he notices your big bad bounty and low sec status)
There!
There can't possibly be a simplest thing around.
#4: Some finesses.
Usually take a bit of practice, but:
-sometimes you can make a nice ss in a system that will cover most belts in there. Then it is: enter system, go to ss, nail planet, warp to planet, nail belt, jump. Can be done in less than a minute
-The thing that will 'rob' you time the most are POSes, and ships parked there. No way to avoid them, but that is why it is a good idea to have 'control towers' in the overview as a hint that it may be happening.
-You may use the 'hunting' overview for 'scanning'; if you dont see NPCs and/or loot cans, even if you see a ship, chances is he is not in a belt, or if he is he will move on.
There it is. Piece of cake!
((Appendix: The bull**** challenge.
There is NO WAY, at all, to know 100% sure in which belt a pilot is unless you scan that belt and nothing else. Period. You can make a guess and, with a bit of practice, be usually right, but that is instinct and not science.
Whoever says that he can have their scanner showing 4 belts and be more than 25% sure that the guys is in belt 3 is either wrong, or lying.
Prove me wrong. ))

I can... but it will cost you. Your still using the wide scanning method witch takes more time than my method. You scan everything, I scan each belt. Im glad your method works for you... but just to me seems like a heck of alot of wasted time.
But to each his own.

Isn't that what everyone who can use the scanner can do ?
Not too hard once youve got it
Finding people at a ss without probes now that would be a lesson people need.
Speaking of which 1 bill and i'll teach you
Note: slight concessions for the elderly and infirm.
