Hi. When I started the game, I had intended to create multiple alts, each with a specific skillset (mining/industry, combat, stealth, etc.). However, now I have learned that you can only train skills on one character at a time, which sort of defeats the purpose of my original plan (I know you can pay to level skills on more than one character, but I don't want to do that). So, now I am thinking about just training all the skills that I would have had across three alts on one character. Is this the best course of action or a good idea? Thanks for the help. |

You can train on one per account, unless you buy the multiple skill training thing (one plex per additional character on the same account you want to train)
When people talk about having multiple alts for different things, they're usually talking about having multiple accounts.
What you propose is possible, but it'll take time. You may be good at one thing not the others or average at all three depending how you set your skills up. |

It depends on what your primary character will do. I'll use myself as an example:
Fluffers is started out as a combat-industrialist character. My goal was to engage in combat whenever I had time or the urge to do so... then retreat back to high-sec where I could mine, run missions, move ships/equipment, and generally earn money.
Over time, my security status began to suffer because I PvPed a lot in low-sec and shot at everything that moved. This began to prevent me from operating in high-sec in any meaningful way (the Faction Police hurt). Plus... hauling cargo and ships in high-sec after you have blown up more than a few thin-skinned people (and have active war decs over your head) made me a juicy target.
So I paused Fluffers' training and made a new character... this one focused entirely on trading and hauling with some light mission running and exploration here or there. It took a few months, but after it was all done I found myself free to focus entirely on Fluffers' combat training while my other character kept him supplied and flush with cash.
Basically... some specializations do not require more than a small handful of skillpoints to be useful. And keeping the characters "separate" means that I need only focus on tasks and "problems" specific to each one.
Hopefully that helps. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Yes you can be a jack of all trades however it does take a lot of time.
Early on focus on your core skills that will apply to all the ships you fly. While you are doing this you can get a feel for the various roles and find the ones that you enjoy the most so that you can focus on one at a time.
I would suggest making a pretty solid choice on either combat or industry though .. just too many skills to really train up both effectively. People do it all the time though. Just takes a while.

With alts people usually refer to extra accounts.
You can train 1 character on each account by default. Or pay 1 PLEX to have 1 extra character on a account to train (so 2 extra PLEX lets you train all your 3 characters).
But you dont have too, jack-of-all-trades gameplay is possible but takes longer to be good at things.
Say your idea was:
Char A = pvp guy = 4 months of skills. Char B = indy guy = 3 months Char C = exploration = 2 months
Now if you went jack of all trades it would take 9 months before you have the exact same skills as the above system.
On the other side, each character will have to train the core skills. By using 1 character you only have to train those once. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

My suggest is to make 2 accounts, one for PVP, and one for example mining. Then copy client, play with 2 client, mine with one meanwhile you make nasty things with your "main" char
But don't forget that you have to make 1200 million ISK / month just to buy PLEXes for your accounts. That is not really easy work. |

I have been resisting the dual account thing so far. I train my main for whatever is my current fancy and well its nice to just be able to do things with it. lots of different things. Sure i am not the top notch best skills evea for this or that ship. But i can have fun in lots of ships. And don't forget your RL fitting, judgment and manual flying skills mean you don't need 20M+ SP to be competitive.
The trick is core skills that apply to almost everything. If i did eve again. Or started an alt i would train core skills from the get go.
However i have the other toons as PI specialized. Took just one month of dual training and now i get about 600M -1B per month of PI income when i can be bothered. They don't have jack core skills. |
