Earlier this evening I suffered the destruction of my Armageddon class battleship ôHard Targetö in a spirited engagement fought against a gentleman named Cloud Alexander in the Syndicate Region.
Approaching the northern Jumpgate from the system at a leisurely pace I had several tens of Kilometres yet to go when my passive sensors registered an in-coming fire control lock. Automatic systems provided a reciprocal lock, and I found myself looking at the profile of a Megathron Battleship ôLeviathö, of distinctive Gallente lines and dashing aggressive styling.
Incoming fire began to score away my shields and without considering evasion or flight I triggered my heavy guns in response.
I was over confident.
The ôHard Targetö was a fleet fire support capital ship, armed with Tachyon Beam Lasers with Multi-Focus crystals, channelled and enhanced by seven heatsinks in the low power bays.
I knew my damage output was extreme, and this knowledge made me reckless.
The exchange of fire was initially in my favour; the Tachyons scoring solid hits and stripping away the shields from the larger vessel with violent ease.
In response, the fire from the Megathron seemed subdued; and as brilliant destructive beams lanced between the ships I really believe I might gain the better of the encounter.
My shields held for around a minute, and the MegathronÆs were already gone with armour carving off into space in a spreading debris field.
Then horror,
Captain Alexander of the ôLeviathö launched a wave of heavy attack drones that armed and surrounded my ship in a matter of seconds, and now the tables were turned.
There was no time to lock and target them all, so I continued with the dogged assault on the MegathronÆs armour belt, but it obvious my own ship was doomed, its armour and then structure withering in the energy of numerous drone-beams to the staccato impacts of capital ship guns beyond.
No escape via the Gate for returned hostility had barred my transponder signal from activating the jump systems. I hopelessly set an escape warp in the direction of a celestial object but the ship was responding sluggishly in her imminent dissolution and my decision was too little, too late.
Seconds of life and I prepared the lifepod systems;
Determining to react quickly to the inevitable and try at least to escape the claws of RagnarÆs hunter.
Then raw space around me, and the collapse of ôHard Targetsö structural integrity as the combined assault of drones and battleship guns broke her valiant back with the tachyon beams spitting their last in doomed defiance.
And the podÆs emergency warp drive workedà And I was clear.
A few minutes careful evasion and a half-warp to a distant moon and I was safe for now from the risk to mortal form.
I triggered communications to Captain Alexander and commended him on the kill, asking later if he was associated with Taggart and RagnarÆs bounty.
The good Captain assured me that no, ætwas just business, and further he commended me on my courage in fighting rather than running, and complemented the damage done to his Battleship, more yet than ever the craft had suffered in times before. Cheered and assured by this at least, I bade the gentlemen good night and made plans to purchase a shuttlecraft for home.
***
Now this is an entirely accurately account of an engagement which was singular in the complete absence of certain of the commonly recurring elements of similar tales;
Neither of us crashed to desktop, There was no lag, There was no poor gamesmanship, No rude language, And nothing but respect between the combatants,
Two battleships fought in fury for a time and one was fairly destroyed.
My last comment to Captain Alexander in response to his question as to whether I was upset was thisà
ôMonsieur, space travel is a hazardous endeavour, and truly nobody has business being at the helm of a starship without the wit and endurance to survive and recover from the loss.ö
I raise a toast to my brave dead ship ôHard Targetö; she was a dauntless fighter of courageous gleaming aspect. She went down fighting hard, and the memory of the fight will teach me lessons that will serve me well in the travails and battles ahead.
But ships, even valorous ones, are merely possessions and material illusions. We are eternal; our hopes go on, our dreams with them.
Love and peace (and my memories of an earnest fight)

I guess that's the RP way of saying
"I got ganked."
still, a real fight between two good opponents to the end is worth more than the cost of a single battleship. gratz on you having fun.. i guess. _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

It's refreshing to see a post about getting owned that's not entitled "I lost everything and now I'm quitting EVE."
Sounds like fun times, Jade, even if you ended up eggified.
Good try and better luck next time!

X-Cuse me.. As a fullblood feminist I must object to that phrase. The worst cry-babies in this game are males. So if Jade would have taken it manly, she would have ranted about something unfair and maybe even post a quitting post :) * -"You know, we play the "good guys" right? As much as Jades normal verbose blah-blah-blahing about Venals (or at least the old Venals) questionable (IMO) politics makes my wana spit sometimes, I have to say Im impressed.
This is, thus far, the most adult reaction I have seen to anyone losing a battleship. I only hope I manage to stay as level-headed when I finally lose mine, which Im sure I will at some point. +++

Edited by: Ashton Black on 05/09/2003 07:03:16 Jade... I have been following your career with much interest over the last couple of months. I must agree with a previous post. No matter what people think of your politics the way you have reacted is at minimum commendable. I would even go as far as to say very impressive and a insparation to us all.

*blinks* don't they operate well within range of a smartbomb, and fall dead after two discharges, tops?..

Great battle madame Jade, It truly waked my pilot's imagination. And its true that on the corp tournament my corp is holding form time to time to my suprise the heavy drones proved to be a lethal waepon also against human pilots, not only pirate drones.

Imagine how much more fun these boards would be if they were full of honourable tales of PvP that are fought fairly and are not effected by one bug or another!
Battleship Fights - although seeming to pass by in a flash (because everything is happening so fast) are epic, and this was just 1 v 1. I yearn for the day when the server can handle lag-free, crashless 10 v 10 or 20 v 20 battleship fights without half the participants thrown into helplessness by technical issues.
Sounds like a fun fight and I am also intrigued as to how heavy drones can turn the tide even against battleships. ---------------------------------------------------

Yea, the large engagements that i've been apart of have not been a matter of skill, but a matter of server stability and ones connection.
Eve coding is somewhat efficent, or was at least so i'm sure they'll be working on this heavily as it is a major part of the game, galatic wars if not already here, just around the corner and such battles will take place and will be crucial in determining the outcome of such conflicts. Server instablity will throw hard work and thought out the window and make such engagements a throw of the dice if not addressed.

A pleasant tale well told.
Missed out another excuse for losing one's ship - drink.
I lost my Thorax last night to DrStrangelove as I was: - Too lazy to find out what sort of ship he was flying. - Overconfident in my minimal fighting abilities. - Too slow to react when it finally hit my fuzzy head that I was in the poo.
He then podded me and refused to listen to my apologies for the loss of his ammunition.
Back to hauling for me.

Whether ruthless and brutal or pragmatic and merciful the Jerichites always play the game! Whilst I weep with sorrow for the loss of a ship designed by the finest minds of Amarr, such moments of sadness are washed away with the visions of honour and glory which Jade has shared with us all.
But no empty tale of distant heros of legend is this - but one of use to us all who face danger and adventure at every gate!
I salute you Cloud Alexander!

Nicely done. And a most interesting insight into Cmdr. Alexander; as they say, "A wise general always keeps something in reserve."
Heavy drones are nasty, especially if one has invested the time into the proper skills to use 6 or more of them. They're each comperable to lowlevel frigates...
i suppose you'll be looking into keep a large smartbomb handy, then . Thanks for the tale; most engaging.

Never underestimate the drones.
I am sure that the slave minamatars in your engine rooms suffered as you were fleeing to safety.
Next time think twice before engaging the superior gallente technology.

Harlequin,
No doubting it, Captain Alexander was skilled and cunning. If he had launched the drones too early I would probably have opted for evasion, or at least moved to open the distance. As for the smartbomb, I was somewhat hoisted by the petard of fleet specialisation. ôHard Targetö was a hammership, designed to break apart vessels held in place by wingmen and allies. All powergrid and cpu was devoted to the cause of maximum direct fire damage in minimum time. She was not a balanced ship, and not best suited for lone operations. My overconfidence and oversight alone, and quite the learning experience.
Milady Daesdemona,
As a vessel of the free NVA space navy, the ôHard Targetö had no slaves amongst the crew. But I take your point on Gallente technology and the drones.
One aspect of the engagement that gives a certain satisfaction is the recent investment made by Jericho Fraction in drone technology and manufacture; we can now mass produce Ogre and Praetor drones from our factories, and will sell finished drones and provide limited blueprint copies to corporations and individuals of reputable standing. Significant discounts will be provided to NVA allies and co-combatants in the war against Taggart Transpiratical. (Please contact Athule Snanm in game for details)
And yes, and as the drones smashed my vessel to tumbling debris one last bright thought stirred a smile of delightful irony; IÆve just finished Drone Operations 5, time to wise up ;)
Onwards and upwards mÆdears

A skillful way of getting some marketing in this popular thread. I praise your masterful dialogue skills and salute you in the cause against the Taggarts.
I furthermore retract my previous statement about slaves and offer you my sincerest apologies, experience has made me weary of High-ranking Amarr Officers, whose facial traits you appear to share.
I wish you luck in your future endeavors.
