Sorry if there is already a topic on this, but I have been researching missile damage equasions, and was wondering if a target painter is worthwhile. Also, how do you use them...is it necesary to have it on at all times, or is it a module that only needs to be turned on during target lock?

target painters increase the sig radius of target. I'll do you a favor and let you figure out whether that will help with missiles...
You activate them on a target, and it counts as aggression, I believe... Ison's notches |

Increasing signature radius has two benefits. It can help make the missile launcher hit harder (if the explosion radius is greater than the signature radius), and it can also decrease lock times.
Do bonuses that increase/decrease lock time affect lock times that are already occuring. For example, if I'm locking onto a target and suddenly the target becomes painted, will that cause the time left to drop?

I have tried this before, it should but it doesnt. Painters only affect dmg but not lock times, unless I have seen something wrong.

target painters make the sig radius of the target bigger. the time to lock the target depends on your signal strength and his sig radius. ergo, painted target = faster lock. ______________________________________________ Hurrah I'm Unbanned \o/ |

I know it should but I can honestly say, I didnt really notice it. Maybe I will have to experiment again. ----------------

lock time formula is an inverse logarithm afaik. You'll have to increase sig radius ^2 to achive a 50% decrease in the lock time.

if the target's sig radius is smaller than that of your guns, yes. of course, if it has 3000m/s traversal on you it won't make much difference. ______________________________________________ Please do not discuss actions taken by forum moderators, even in your sig. --Jorauk |

How can a Target Painter AFFECT lock times when you MUST LOCK a target in order to ACTIVATE said Target Painter?

Gang member locks and paints target before you lock target. In a larger scale battle this could give you several extra seconds per target.
When out solo it would be more or less pointless to use it to lock faster but the potential damage increase from them is still effective.

I think my question was misunderstood. The module de-activates iteslf after 10 seconds (give or take depending on different types) does this mean that the target is only painted for those 10 seconds, or does the painter permanantly paint the target even after the module itself has turned off?

Painted when module is active. Autorepeat the module will help you a lot. ----------------
