Edited by: Sabahl on 05/09/2003 19:40:02 If you take a quick look at the player stats from the monthly graphs generated automatically on Eve I:Com an interesting thing becomes apparent. The server population has definitely stabilised and, more intertestingly, the trend in recent weeks has been for more people to be playing. This has to mean that there is a gradual trickle of new players coming onto the server.
Now, CCP stated some time ago that this is effectively only the first phase of players being injected onto the system and that there would be future drives to attract more peopel into Eve. We currently have around 6k people on at any one time but, if I recall, the actual simultaneous player population will eventually be closer to five times that amount.
Given that the servers are relatively stable and that a new client is finally being put together I'd like to ask the following. Are there any imminent plans to attract a large number of new players into the game. Does the network yet have the capaacity to deal with it? Can we expect lots of new players in the very near future to welcome into the fold?

Well although the client and bugs are being ironed out, new ones and balance issues are appearing all the time. Eve's teething proccess, for me at least, still has a long way to go.
As regards server stablity, well i hope (touch wood) that we are over the recent crawling servers that we saw the other week or so. They really do however need to focus on massive combat lag. This is all too apparent in engagements between 10 or more battleships. Such conflicts will be all too frequent aqnd having them determined by who has the luck to not CTD will only hinder eve's progress.

More players will definately help the game along in the long-term. If you haven't already done it, start spreading the word, and more people will join.
Even though people generally tend to hate newbies and prey on them, they're the lifeblood of the continuation of Eve. If start (and continue) to be courteous towards these new players, it'll just grow exponentially. ___________________________________

Price cuts have no doubt been helping with that trend. People are far more likely to try something if the $$$ risk factor is reduced.

CCP and SSI need to do a lot more advertisement. A couple of article here and there don't do a whole heck of a lot. But continous ads tend to get peoples attention. *Reinforcing thoughts* Vice-Admiral

I agree that EVE advertisements are lacking.
I only learned of the game after a LONG and TIRESOME search for a new gaming experience. I tried "Earth and Beyond" and was moments from purchasing "Star Wars: Galaxies" before I learned of EVE.
Thank the lord I was lucky enough to be saved from SWG by this great game.

After not seeing EVE at my local Wal-Mart for about 3 weeks, I am pleased to say they had 20 more copies on the shelves for $39.99. So there must still be a demand here in the States :) or at least in rural missouri

Yeah, I had to buy it from the UK (I'm swedish) since the local GAME hadn't gotten it yet. Was smooth and fast though! Well, this was soon after release. --- No matter how fast light travels it finds the darkness always got there first, and is waiting for it. - Terry Pratchett |

People have been buying multiple copies. That would account for most of your stabilization. And BTW it's $24 Canadian.
I only wish it was upward movement. Maybe in time it might be.
And quite frankly its been less then a week of relatively stable servers, lets give it a bit before we say it's great. It was only 24 hours last time the servers went **** up and everyone hailed how great it was only to be wiped out again.
Reality sucks but there it is. How quickly people forget.

One of the better ways to check newbie growth in your area has nothing to do with checking server stats. You can do it in-game.
You can do this by checking the sales history and stats of ships noobies are likely to buy right in the EVE marketplace, where you can display a bar chart:
Frigates Industrials Level 1 and 2 cruisers
For example, the sales of Tormentors, Bursts, Navitas, Bantams.

I'm trying to do my part. I've started to give out copies of Eve as gifts to all my computer friends that don't already have it! Today, I'm giving one away as a birthday gift to a friend.

Getting a copy with a manual that predates beta and lacks the CD-key isn't selling the game very well, fortunatelly for CCP I'm stubborn once I set my mind to something.

first they have to migrate Eve servers from running on win95 to some grown-up OS, say Solaris. Then they can handle increased player base in case that ever happens.
One would think that they would figure out to have redundant servers for key systems along the Highway, like Yulai or Luminaire, but no, people are getting stuck there again.
Then you try to do some missions to chug along content and all, you get 3 hours to finish the mission, jump to Luminaire, get stuck, and if you are very very lucky you get moved after 4 hours. Needless to say, GMs dont bother to reset your mission status and you fail it.

'Game' in Worthing (UK) still has it in their stuff-that's-selling-loads section for ú30.
I'm sure we're getting quite a lot of player churn though. I've recently started doing agent missions again (if only we'd had shuttles 4 months ago...) which has entailed going back into new player space for the first time in ages, and I'm pleased to say it's still busy with genuine new players. Problem is, the concurent online counts aren't going up which means either people are disappearing as quick as they're coming in....or the more established players are playing less (my guess). - Carp Riddell - CEO, Innsmouth Shipping - Proud Member of Curse Alliance
