So I was doing some of my first L2 missions tonight, thinking I'd be more than capable of taking them on in my blaster-fitted Thorax.
... Holy jesus was I ever wrong. I warp into the gate for this mission, and there are a bunch of drones. No problem. I take them out with ease. I move onto the next gate and am horrified to see about 15 mercenary fighters all locked onto me and spamming me with light missles that do 60 damage each. Do the math. That's 900 damage every 6 second interval.
How the hell does CCP expect ANYONE to take on such a huge amount of ships solo? I don't think anything short of a Battleship could tank that kind of damage: even with hardeners installed you'd be taking at least 500 damage every couple of seconds.
Can someone tell me a way to be able to do this mission? I'm really sick of doing L1 missions in a Thorax, and was hoping for some challenge... but not to the point where I was down to structure in less than 30 seconds.

I don't know if it's gotten any more difficult, but pre-RMR my Moa could handle it with a nanofiber and an afterburner (which was the mobility aspect of my fit). And I wast using frigate-sized 150mm rails too, so I wasn't even using the big guns.
Tank yourself well, and make good use of your speed. I seem to remember my drones helping me out a bit.

You sure you're talking about level 2?
I can shield tank the level 3 in Gila, flying solo and my skills aren't great.

What sort of tank do you have on that Thorax? You should at least be fitting a Medium Armor Repairer and 3 active armor hardeners (Armor Thermic Hardener, Armor Kinetic Hardener, & Armor Explosive Hardener.)
Unless the mission has gotten much more difficult post-RMR, it shouldn't be terribly hard... I remember doing it in a Punisher a few times months prior to RMR.

Fit a tank. Find what damage they do and use hardners against it. _____________________________________

Try fitting rails instead of blasters for that mission, worked for me every time without any problems. Also, be carefull about agroing them - one spawn at the time. As I recall, only the nearest spawn agroes when you jump in, so take them out first.

I've done Silence the Informant (L2) in a Merlin. Currently that is the best boat I can fly. When I did this one, maybe I got lucky, because I was able to fly around the NPCs and carefully agro just a few of them at a time. I'm not saying it was easy, and I finished with half armor gone, but it was fun and very profitable (netted about 2 million isk after selling the named launcher that dropped).
I noticed that the npcs don't seem to always return to the same spot if you pull them away. Kiting a bunch of them away from where you warp in, warping out and then back might give you room to work.

Edited by: Xori Ruscuv on 05/03/2006 07:30:57 Running a railax, I've done silence the informant tons of times prepatch and a couple of times postpatch.
The mission never was hard, and isn't hard. The npcs in the second area can't break my tank even if I AB across the 100km to the farthest blob.
Sounds like ship fitting is your problem. Not a problem with the blasters - a problem with little/no tank.
Originally by: Dark Pilot Also, be carefull about agroing them - one spawn at the time. As I recall, only the nearest spawn agroes when you jump in, so take them out first.
I've been ABing it across the 100km area there, agroing everything I get close to and killing things quickly as I pass them. I've been doing this since I first got my cruiser, when I had WELL under 1m SP.
Allow me to repeat once more: This is NOT a difficult mission where you need to worry about spawn in the least bit.

Crank the right skills up, fit the right tank, and it'll be a doddle. 'nuff said.
I'm guessing since these are your first L2 missions that their difficulty level is a shock after L1, and that your character is relatively new.
That's how it's supposed to be - L3 will be a shock again, and L4 will scare the pants off.
Keep pace with your character's shield, armor and weapons skills, and you'll be fine. I can sleepwalk through L2 STI in a frig (ok, it's a Harpy, but still, it's a frig :)) And once you reach 3M SP+ you should be able to do all L3 missions in a BC without breaking a sweat.

Edited by: Kayl Breinhar on 05/03/2006 10:43:24 The Mercs spit out Flameburst (thermal) missiles. An active plus the Gallente inherent thermal resistance (or fit an adaptive nano/energized thermal hardner combo), I think the damage is cut down to about 27-something.
I've run this mission easily four times in a Blasterax (granted, I have Drones V - but if you send them into a cloud of missileers, you're going to lose a few) No problems. They've never broken my tank, and I don't even have a plate equipped. Simply put, if this mission is ****ing you off, don't even TRY Human Cattle.
The only real annoying thing about that second room is the ships replenish slowly over time, so it's a pain in the ass to collect loot...just be content you're getting the bounty, really... ![Confused](/images/icon_confused.gif)

Don't aggro all the groups at once. Take them out one at a time, making sure your drones don't do anything naughty and get you killed. There's a single Mercenary Fighter that respawns at the gate every couple seconds- kill the initial group of 3 of them that engage you as soon as you warp in and then leave that single respawning ship alone while you deal with the other groups. Once you've cleared the whole rest of the level, pop that single ship while near the gate and warp away. If I could do it in a shield tanked Rupture (I was young, okay?) with a month of skills under my belt, you can too! ------------------------------------------------ I have no signature, and am therefore immune to any signature shenanigans. |

Be careful where you fly in the UDI section.
I usually take out the 4 ships guarding the gate, then proceed up towards the group above, since they agro at about 80km and would come after me while I'm heading towards the other groups anyway. Agro management is important here. Don't get too many shooting at you.
Then take out the rest and make your way back to the gate.

This used to be hard.....now I aggro every frig out of sheer boredom with my Vexor.
You dont need any skills, less than 1 Mil. Just fit a good tank and you'll easily handle the dps.
Now Level 3 missions feel like this used to :)

Merc Wingmen, the ones that web and scramble, drops exp missiles at you.
And drop the Heavy Neutron Blasters for either frig size rails/blasters (would suggest rails), since your mostly fighting frigs anyways. That also gives you room for a better tank (2xkin and 2xTherm). That will reduce the 60 dam to something like 15. ![Smile](/images/icon_smile.gif)

A blaster thorax is fine for lvl 2 Silence the Informant, just takes a little while to fly from group to group.
The suggestions for fitting a good tank, aggroing groups one at a time are all definitely the way to go. Drones are also a big help, especially in a blasterax, because with reasonable skills you can send those drones out to attack long before your blasters are in range. You should be able to take out one, maybe two, frigates this way before you get to use your blasters.

Popping drones in the UDI room is a good way to lose drones - missiles + drones = dead drones. They LOVE shooting at them before they shoot at you.

I flew this mission in the daredevil pre- and post-patch. Don't think it's that big of a deal, harden your thorax, use tech II med repair and don't forget to use your drones... you should be fine --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I turned this down first time round. When I warped in and got hit by the first salvo of missiles I immediately warped out again. Mind you that was a Tristan.
![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif)
Since then I've kitted out a Vexor and have completed Human Cattle so this *should* be easier when it comes up again.
I would advise using an active thermal hardner or two but if you don't have the skills for that yet a couple of passives should be ok. Throw in a med AR and as much rolled tung plate as you can fit.

My suggestion would be to both harden your ship and get rid of those blasters. Try using some medium railguns instead; I am betting you will have greater success.

I do this mission in a pretty standard fit Moa. I can't quite do it with my eyes shut but it's close:
4 x 250mm CC rails w/ iridium / AM ammo 2 x SV2000 assault launchers
1 x Y-5B AB 1 x Med shield booster (for 'emergencies' - not needed on this mission) 1 x ditrogonal thermal hardener, 1 x non-ballistic hardener. [1 invul shield and a webber for those pesky drones also works]
1 x PDS1 1 x RCU (need for the rails power consumption at least until skills improve) 1 x tracking enhancer 1 x magnetic stabilizer
3 assorted light drones (use them for taking on the drones)
The trick with the second level is not to aggro everything at once ;) If you check the locations of the 4 merc groups you'll see there's a sort of 'vertical square' arrangement. Because you get an additional merc warping in every few minutes I prefer to kill all the 'static' spawns as fast as possible then pick up the cans on the way back, whilst picking off the adds.
Load up high damage short range ammo when you warp in, flip on the thermal hardeners and take a quick look around. Head 'upwards' and 'away' from the nearest group of mercs (about 25-30km away)... target and kill them first... by the time you get that group down you're about in range of the second group (40km or so). After that you can turn off the hardeners for a while and power up the AB because unless you mess up, nothing else will get within firing range.
Now switch to longer range ammo and pick off the 2 remaining groups from long range. Up to you whether you go to fetch those cans or not... usually means 3 or 4 extra spawns but you can pick them off with at long range so it's just more loot.
As you come back round towards the gate switch back to AM ammo as the adds will be spawning 10km away. Loot the last few cans, head through the gate. The last part is cake... only tip there is kill the mobile residence as that's where the mission pays for itself ;) "I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it." |

There shouldn't be 15 Merc Fighters all sitting on the jump in point. Rather, you should be going up against 6 or so, in two separate spawns.
If you did have 15 fighters starting right on top of you, that's a bug. Try petitioning it, and see what happens. I wouldn't expect much, though.
