Looks like its the Atlanta office (the ones making World of Darkness) thats getting hit hard. Although it seems some in China are going to spend more time with their families too.
I feel bad for the developers themselves. Its a pretty horrible thing to do to people at this time of year. Most will have already blown last months pay check on Christmas. At least tell them before they spend a bomb on Christmas. I am sure Hilmar won't be missing out on any Japanese Pants this season though.
On the other hand. Its good news that CCP are cutting back on their side projects rather than Eve. The mentality they had a few years ago was that Eve was a cash cow and they pumped everything into side projects. It almost took the whole company down.
With more focus on the core game, lets hope they can actually do something good and we can see some real growth again.

I saw the article (although I didn't bother to check who wrote it until just now). I still don't think twitter is particularly good as a source, but I guess if Mittens decided he had enough to go on to publish an article he probably has more sources he hasn't disclosed.
So, foot-in-mouth I suppose. My original comments were based on the assumption that whoever wrote this article didn't do any fact checking. Latest video - Pandemic Legion titan and supers killed |

Quote:Update: Senior PR Specialist Ned Coker offered the following official CCP statement regarding the layoffs:
CCP today made strategic adjustments to the staffing on the team working on the World of Darkness project in Atlanta that resulted in the elimination of approximately 15 positions at the company. The change was due to our evaluation of the gameGÇÖs design and ongoing development needs. While this was a difficult decision, CCP remains committed to the franchise and our promise to make a compelling, rich, and deep World of Darkness experience. The Drake is a Lie |

I'm not sure I understand how laying off 15 staff from a "side project" enhances the focus on the "core game." There are still the same number of developers working on EVE Online, unless you are suggesting that there were staff movements from WoD development to EVE development. Please enlighten me.

I'll say here the same thing I said in the other thread. If the laid off employees were living paycheck to paycheck then that was their choice and has no bearing on the decision that CCP came to. If you have to cash your paycheck to be able to buy presents, then you cannot actually afford them and you should reconsider how you handle your money. These people being laid off now sucks no more or no less than being laid off in June, and I hope they planned accordingly and haven't been building up debt their entire career. That's mostly because WOD isn't being seriously developed. It has constantly been the project where resources get pulled out in favor of other projects and which gets the brunt of any layoffs, so a less important side project. The last update we got said there is no real content development on it being done and the people working on it were mainly focusing on preparations(tech, plans, tools), so when the needed resources are committed they have everything they need in place. |

Thing is though CCP are contractually obliged to finish WOD as part of the merger/deal with White Wolf. I can't remember where I read that though so apologies if it's not accurate. Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |

While that's all quite... pleasant of you, the point was that its generally considered bad form to have layoffs and firings over the holidays. It tends to put a damper on the whole thing and the people leaving tend to have grudges about it. More so than, say, layoffs in July.
As someone who's written paychecks, layoffs around the Christmas holiday are something we try and avoid, because we might want those people to come back later when things improve and we hire again (as this is a layoff, not a firing). It helps avoid getting a reputation among potential employees for being 'the next EA'.
As far as living paycheck to paycheck, as this is a layoff, they will get unemployment. The problem is that the timing means things will be tight for a month around the holidays for those workers laid off.
Unless your thread is limited to how 'awesum!' Eve Online is, ISD will lock the thread.-á You will find it is particularly common if CCP might have to make a public response to the thread subject, as opposed to bury it in the GM que for the forseeable future and then prohibit telling anyone what the GM said, if it's ever answered at all. |

As there already is a thread on the same topic, this one gets a lock.
The rules: 16. Redundant and re-posted threads will be locked. As a courtesy to other forum users, please search to see if there is a thread already open on the topic you wish to discuss. If so, please place your comments there instead. Multiple threads on the same subject clutter up the forums needlessly, causing good feedback and ideas to be lost. Please keep discussions regarding a topic to a single thread.
