I am looking to buy 2 blasters for my new tristan, but when I use the market, there are like 20 different ones. Is there a guide somewhere that explains the differences between a light ion or light electron blaster?

I've done that, I'm trying to figure out why a 5k isk weapon seems to be identical to one that cost 500k isk. All things considered, why would anyone buy the expensive stuff if the cheapo does the same?

I'm not sure which weapons you're looking at. Maybe the 500k ones are tech 2 small blasters? tech 2 items have high skill reqs, are more expensive, but are usually better than their tech 1 counterparts. Or perhaps you're looking at named blasters? Again, named guns will do more damage, etc. but cost more. The ones you're after at the moment are called "light ion blaster I" or "light electron blaster I".
As for electrons vs. ions, basically ions do more damage, but electrons use less powergrid and CPU (so are easier to fit). There are usually differences in tracking speeds, cap use per shot, etc. too, you can find all that info in the module description.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I just need to sit down and do a item by item comparison and determine if the differences are worth the costs.

Typically, the higher price ones do more damage and/or use less CAP/CPU. That's true with most of the ship items. The 'starter' ones use the most CAP and CPU, which in turn limits how many devices you can activate at once.
The Tech2 devices also require a higher skill level. |

I would honestly recommend against splashing out a lot of isk for named stuff whilst you're new to the game. The regular tech 1 items work perfectly well and you won't lose a fortune when your ship gets popped by rats (NPC or player). If you find named stuff, you can decide whether to sell it or use it, but for now save your isk.

One of the more recent features in EVE is the introduction of the Variations tab on the Show Info window for most equipment. This can give you a quick run-down of the gradations of a particular item. The most notable differences between generic items and named/T2 ones are fitting cost (CPU/grid), damage/effectiveness and capacitor usage.
You will find that named and T2 gear can definitely be worth using. Worth paying the considerably higher costs? That's for you to decide.
