What race and what ships are best suited for solo PVP with occasional wingmen, in your guys' opinion?

All of them. Really. No one race is significantly better than the other, and comparing them will get you no-where.

There really isn't PvP in Eve - it is PvPs. Never ever met one (unless non pirate) who would do it. Pirates are usually the carebearest of all. Invite yes - show up with friends - and I think that says all.

For solo pvp you need to be able to choose your fights, be fast enough to tackle, do a lot of damage in a short time before their friends arrive, and be able to run away like a little girl when the blob finally does arrive, imo.
Nothing meets these criteria like a vaga. Second choice would probably be gallente, with the ishtar/dominix. While not as mobile as the vagabond, they can take more of a beating if they do get pinned down, and can effectively use EW to a greater degree than the vagabond can (imo). And of course being drone based, they are less affected by EW. An obvious downside is the possibility of being forced to warp without drones, which while not so big a concern for a dominix, can put a premature end to an ishtar's hunting trip.

i'd say minmater is most suitable for the task.
