Its simple really Shin taki.
Your desktop with 256Mb of memory and windows xp pro and goodness knows what ever background processes. you are running will not run eve effieciently . if at all ( Win Xp needs 110-130 Mb just to run ) so you will always be running via your HD. and if this is defragged then you are in trouble. "Memory leak " - in regards to your system - not applicable.
Also please note that the ATI 7500 system is base to borderline as to ability and the newer ati gfx drivers will cause this card to die when running. Add this to your your overall specs and you will stuggle.
As to your laptop . As to the Gfx cards that eve supports - I dont believe the mobile variant of the 9000 is supported. Only the 9000 pro .
I have every sympathy for your inability to run the game.
But Afaik and in the system requirments supplied by ccp . Both your machines are going to struggle.
Not much help I know

My reason for asking this question is, that finding EVE and having it fail to run properly on both of the systems that I have available to me, gives me an excuse to upgrade. I wanted to see if I could notice any patterns in what people posted so that I could chose my hardware accordingly.

Gigabyte K8NSC-939 with an Athlon 64 bit @ 2.5 GHz (4000+ effective) Radeon 9600XT and 1GB Ram
Fraps shows me as 60 FPS constant, unless im in a fleet battle then it drops to 25-30 if more than 20 people shooting eachother, effects and sounds and everything is on

(and underneath plates, where dust hides)
Laptop Compaq Presario V4000 1.4 Celeron M 1 gig of ram (from Kingston again) integrated 915 intel vid onboard soundmax sound integrated wireless g win xp
Surprisingly, the 915 intel int vid does decently well.. no aa or anis though, but good fps at 1280x780.. 1 gig of ram really does the trick though.
