The following events took place while I was attempting some solo 0.0 piracy. I picked up my Vexor in the Syndicate and headed out to take down anything I had a good chance against.
Initially targets were scarce and I was seriously considering turning back but at the last system on the list, I found a Gila sitting at the gate. I thought about it for a sec and figured, ''what the hell, he'll probably kick my ass(he was a couple of years older than me) but im risking a 4 million isk ship for a ransom in the region of 50 million''. I engaged him but he jammed me and started hitting my tank. I held on long enough to get a lock and then took his shields down with ease. Sadly I was just out of scrambler range and he warped off.
A few minutes later he returned and got beaten again, he then managed to get away again. Maybe he had stabs on, maybe not, the point is I had beaten him twice and got no reward. I then left the system to replenish my drone supply and when I returned there was another person in local(this time in an Ishkur).
I again attempted to engage the Gila but he always seemed to be 30km away from wherever I landed. I ended up warping to a planet to try and get a drop on him. I found the Ishkur there. He engaged me but lost. I attempted to ransom him for 20 million but he claimed to have only 17. I agreed and waited for my ransom money.
My wallet flashed and I checked to see if the ransom was paid. I realised he only paid me 1.7mil so I gave him 10 seconds to correct his error(big mistake). Sure enough my friend in the Gila warped in, I attempted to pop the frig but found myself jammed once again. The frig jumped away and I was forced to make a humiliating withdrawal. I attempted to pick them off seperately but they effentually formed a gang, and I was forced to leave.
I cannot complain about the actions of these pilots(nothing to complain about) because I know what happened was entirely my fault. That being said, after this incident im seriously thinking of going with the advice of many veteran pirates and simply NOT offering any ransoms. Many people dont understand or agree with this stance but after today I certainly do.

If you're going to ransom, and this is going by experience in other games involving piracy, always keep the son of a ***** low enough that you can instantly pop him.
Why am I giving you this advice again? Not only is it obvious, I also shoot your ilk in EvE :)

Solo pvping in 0.0 trying to balance 2 targets and you wonder why they work together? :/ We need to go out ratting more, n probably will.
Sucks you lost out, but it was 2 of them, and jammers always seem to work :/

You have a fair amount of time between when a target shows up on overview and when he can lock. Assuming you use gunfire to keep a target on low structure, thats plenty to kill him.

Ransom their ship. If they screw around with you by sending the wrong amount, blow them RIGHT away. Don't wait.
if they complain that it was an accident, appologise, and go on your way. Don't give the isk back, don't offer to reimbuse them. If they can't transfer the right amount, blow em up.
PLEASE ransom. I HATE being insta popped in my little Frigate I use for express deliveries.

Good job on the Ishkur.
And yep, negotiations while there are other people in local (and above all if they are confirmed hostiles) is better done at the last thread of structure.

Look at it this way: You just got 1.7Mil ISK and didn't take any losses

Kill them and don't look back. You help eliminate a great deal of risk, speed up the window of your kill so you can safe spot, and generally can sell the loot for more than the ransom by just going straight for the kill. Imagine the amount of ISK you could have taken from the t2 gear left behind on the ships?
Let them scream in local for the ransom, and even then keep them at 5-10% structure. If they don't scream, no ransom. If they do scream, ransom. If they scream and trick you, that 5% structure can be taken out by one volley of your guns. --------------

Yeah do as malka says, if your unsure about a situation just kill, if youruneasy take to 5% structure, if you are pretty confident about the situation dont shoot at all, ammo costs isk, use as little as possible
