Both.
And, maybe I'm confused, but if 1 au is 150000000km, then why not jsut multiply by two to get 300000000? or, doing just the first 2 numbers thing, 15 * 2 = 30, 15 * 7 = 105 etc? 15 is happily a very simple number to multiply. -------------- Director. Edited by: Herko Kerghans on 10/03/2006 02:59:11 (He he he... 'cos some people get scared with multiplications by two digits, yet going baby steps by mutiplying by 3 and then dividing by 2 is easy for the most part.
Of course, if the conversion is N*(3/2*10), then no doubt it is N*15...
...but if you say somebody "do 12x15" they sometimes get confused, while doing 12x3=36, 36/2=18, 18x10=180 is a bit simpler.
A matter of heuristics, I guess. I do the direct N*15 myself, but I've notice that with N>6 a lot of people I tought the use of the scanner just got lost, yet they had no problem breaking up the factors.
Plus, I noticed a lot of people get confused with the zeroes. 15x7 = 105, that is obvious, but 150.000.000x7=105.000.000...
er, no, wait, it's 10.500.000.000?
No, damn! 10.500.000!?!?
Guess that's why the 'focus on the 15 an replace' seems to work fine.)

Wouldn't a checkbox or something, where you could choose if you wanted to scan in km's or AU's been really REALLY nice?

Been asked to death, same as some confirmation about how scan probe works.
I suspect that since they are gonna overhaul the whole scanning system (see 'In Development'), and to be honest the normal scanner does work, and the scan probes are not so much used anyway (compared to, say, the amount of people that use missiles), they will leave it for the next big patch when all those changes come around.

Lol @ numbers.
I just pull the trigger. I roughly know they're good enough to bring down badly tanked cruisers and really badly tanked BC when solo and that's enough for me.
I even use nanofibers on my ship even though they give less than 2% benefit to avoiding hvy missile damage. Why? I have no idea, but I get to go fasterer.
Nailing the 15 degree interval is trickier than roughly lining up the scan reticle. It would be nice if instead of a tiny slider we just had little buttons or a bigger slider.

Directional...
It seems to be faster as the scanner has to bring up less things if you are scanning only 15-30 degrees. Plus with belts showing up on the screen at any range now it's pretty easy to narrow things down quickly. ________________ ~Phelan Lore

Then do a quick check on the overview/map of which planet you can go to so that you cover as much of the galaxy as possible. Then, if a 360 ends up blank, squeeze out the remainders. It takes longer than 20 seconds, but clearing out as much as possible first helps. Happened in Aulbres a lot, I could warp to planet IX and scan almost all of the belts. If they were clear, only two belts I had to worry with. --------------

I use directional scanning. You goto the planet that has the most belts and then scan the belts, takes only a few seconds per belt, if that long. Hades, I even found a guy hiding out by a moon, guess he thought i wouldnt check there, but I am a tenacious little illigitimate child, hehe I would make a sig, but that would take time away from hunting. |

I'm math lazy soo I'll probably make a table or something for quick reference. For alignment I zoom the view of my ship out until it's just a speck and use it as a sight. You can then narrow to < 15% with no problem.

Hmm well i must be doing it totaly wrong.I just warp to all the planets the have belts and scan at 19,000,000.
Guess this would make finding people easyer and faster

directional, unless I'm having problems finding a plant or belt in the overview then I'll switch to range.
For the most part if I have the plant narowed down I'll go for directional, find it much much quicker then range. I can ushally have two scanns done before someone can type in 677,993 or what ever range they are looking for.

Ranged.
First I type in 9999999999 in the range field - it gets replaced with the max scan range of 2147483647 km to see if there are any targets in range.
If there are targets in range, proceed to step 1.
Step 1. If I'm around a planet with belts/moons I remove that last 7 to get a range of 214748364 (about 1.4 AU which is enough for most planets). If the target is in range, half the ranges up/down until the belt/moon/gate is narrowed down. Otherwise, type a 1 in front of 214748364 to get 8 AU (which is between 1.4 AU and 14.3 AU (limit)) and narrow down the planet / gate / whatever. If its a planet, warp to it and repeat Step 1.
Step 2. If its a big system, warp around (efficiently) to find targets in range and proceed with Step 1.
Been doing this for 2.5 years, easy and fast. |

Both are good to be honest.
I use a combination of both whenever I'm scanning. I'll begin with ranged like TWD has described and then quickly find a vague direction with objects to warp to.

Depends on the size of the system, sometimes in those ultra large systems you can get a fix in 20 seconds from directional.
In the smaller systems 50+/50- range scans with moons/belts/planets on the scan overview. Fear the Ibis of doom. |

Ah, yes, in this you are correct: if you used math to catch your prey, just spare the poor soul the use of adjectives to ransom him/her.
I mean, we want their money or loot, not take away all his/her myths and stereotypes!

I left a chicken pot-pie in EC- once, i was terribly upset, it was my lunch you see. Anyways Hama scanned it down in no time using his now patented 'Ham-ScanÖ'! Then he ransomed me for my chicked pie and ate it
evil evil little man. I really like chicken pie.
