What's Goonfleet?
Yeah, I know it's a corp. Seems they like to shoot at stuff :-)
But what's with their recruiting -- is it completely open? Do they take people on trial accounts? Are they full of alts of bored carebears? Or noobs? I understand they specialize in T1 frigate swarms...

Members of the Something Awful Forums call themselves goons.
These "goons" discuss any and every possible thing on the discussion forums.
A few members of the forum play EVE, and recruit other members of the same forum.
They have their own little corp. If you want to join the corp. You have to join the Something Awful forums. And you will probably be there for at least 6 months before they allow you to join the EVE Goonfleet corp.

Edited by: Callistus on 09/03/2006 19:39:55 I would not describe a corp with over 600 members as 'little'. Due to their size I highly doubt its as difficult to join as you suggest. --------------

Edited by: Calenth on 09/03/2006 20:54:03 We are an Eve corporation that is exclusively for members of a separate internet forum with over seventy thousand registered members. We do not recruit from the general eve population, but only from established members of our separate, external community.
That said, generally speaking, we're the largest corporation in the game, with over 800 members, and our membership generally straddles the 'hardcore" and "casual" line, living largely in NPC-controlled 0.0 space. Most of us are relatively new to the game; the vast majority of our membership has under 5 million skillpoints, but we have an established "core" of veterans who have been playing the game for years. We generally introduce our new members to 0.0 space as quickly as possible after they create their accounts, ideally on the same day.
Since so many of us are newbies, we get a lot of attention, and a lot of newbies get pointed to us for advice. We also like to think of ourselves as proof that day old new players -- if they're organized and supported -- can be a force to be reckoned with even in 0.0 space conflicts.

Ah, I see.

There might be. I think Ars Technica has a relatively successful corporation going. To my knowledge we're the most successful Eve corp following this model though (depending on how you define "success" of course).

You mean "the only". As you are the only corp following your particular model, I guess you could say you are the most successful. Every one of the other corps recruit ingame and don't resort to recruiting from a band of forum readers.
As well as that, you contradict yourself: Established forum users? Recruit when they start their active account? In 0.0 on their first day?
Their first day is when they start their trial not 14 days later!
A forum user would most likely have an account long before they came to your forum. how would they know about you otherwise? Or do you convince them to give up their existing character to start a new one that you "show" them how to create to get the best stats.
-- My idea of an OS is one that Operates the System, not a complete package of every piece of software ever written. Computers created "The Paperless Office". But some stupid fool invented a printer |

OT Corp is from offtopic.com
We're much smaller than Goonfleet and just started....I don't know about any other large sites or forums that have corps, and none are anywhere near the level of Goonfleet

SA has a rather interesting (and hilarious) community.
I am not a member of SA myself, though I have been reading their forums for years. Paid member to post (I'm too cheap), but most times a wide selection of the forums are open for non-goons to just read.
There's no doubt SA is sending new EVE pilots this way. (That's how I ended up here, btw... even as a non-goon). There are a massive amount of non-registered people reading the SA forums for various entertainments, on top of the officially registered goons.
If you are familiar with the forums, you'll understand how a person becomes established there... and how that carries over to here.
_______ See you in Vegas!

No contradictions, established forum members refer to the SA forums not the EVE forums. Since SA is a general forum covering a variety of topics it's quite possible to be established there and not yet have an EVE account.
Since most of their recruits have never heard of the game they tend to be new, and are ported to 0.0 at the start of their trial accounts. If a SA forum member has been playing EVE longer they can just come out with their current character no need to start a new one. |
