I don't get it, why such a short range? I'm always at least 5km away from a roid when I mine it, so why so short?

so once you are withing 5km of the roid you know how much is in it, and whether to bother staying there or not :o imo... mine does 5.5km anyway :-p

I've always wondered that myself. Every time I go to scan a large asteroid, I risk getting stuck in it's gravity well.
Would a 10km scanning range really be unbalancing?

Edited by: Jash Illian on 08/09/2003 07:04:29 I was always of the opinion that to be of any use the roid scanners should:
1) Sweep the entire belt
2) Scan for specific roid types
Doing so with a large margin of error, reduced by the Survey skill.
edit P.S. And all roids should look the same. That'd make mining interesting

Put your Survey Scanner on a frigate and perhaps one or two AB's. Autorepeat the scan and fly thru the belt and you get a near complete list of the belts resources.
Now go get your miner ship if it's worth mining the belt.
Frigates don't get stuck on asteroids so the short range doesn't matter that much.

I use a "Dactyl" scanner, with a range of 6500m, slightly better. I think that having belt-sweeping scanners would make it waaaaaay to easy to scout, but I agree that you should be able to filter what you want the thing to scan for.

I'm one of those people who've found a nice system, and am basically just staying in it mining.
I choose a belt, find the first rock of the type I'm looking for, and move the ship so that it covers the most of the belt's length from that rock and inwards so I get the maximum amount of ore per container.
Then I use the camera to view the belt from all angles to locate the rocks I want, lock on to them, and idly mine away until the rocks are finished.
I like the idea of the roid scanner, but I don't find any use for it when most of the rocks I'm interested in aren't on the list.
However, if the scanner would get an increase in range by using a range-increase module.. that'd be great, then I'd probably find some use for that empty med-slot I have no idea how to fill when mining.

Trust me.. frigs do get stuck in roids! Happens to me at least twice a nite.. Usually happens when you are between 2 large roids..

Edited by: Elaron on 09/09/2003 16:35:52 It would be useful if it was possible to sort the list generated by the scanner by distance, ore type or by ore amount. I seriously doubt that upping the scanning range on the basic version of the module to coincide with the range on the standard mining laser would be a game-breaking problem either.

If I want an accurate survey of the entire belt, I don't even use the survey scanner.
I pull up somewhere near the belt, set the ship's scanner for 200km and I get a list of everything in the belt.
I use survey scanners to select which roids I'm actually going to mine.
Definately an oversight that survey scanners are good for approximately half the range of most mining lasers.

Honestly, a Belt-range scanner would save a lot of eye strain and carpal from trying to zoom.
Most miners already recognize roids they want by eye, and they probably don't even bother with a scanner, due to its range.
We can already recognize roids by coloring and shape, and we can already guesstimate the amout of ore by their size. It just takes a lot of eye strain, which is NOT what you want to force your customers to deal with in a game. |

And don't harvesters also only have about a 5k range which is the same as the basic scanner?
Another coincidence?
When I used to mine, I used to get to a spot in a field that had lots of rocks that I was after on that run. I got to about 12k and started the CUs up to mine. I kept cruising into the cluster of rocks I was after. Stopped the ship about center and start scanner. Pick a good one, and that was the rock the harvesters went for.
What I do is to shoot out away from my center to get 12k out and get the best rocks in those directions around me. As I move in, the scanner helps me tell what is left in the rocks nearby and of course, the can is sitting right where I am.
