Having just read a post about this sort of thing which developed into a flame war i thought i would bring it to the correct forum ( not general discussion)
The idea of people mining in their Battleships does seem a little strange as , after all, BS are intended to fight and not mine..However given the current situation they are the obvious ship to choose
My suggestion, and im sure it probably been said before, is that CCP have three choices :
1) They can bring in a new type of turret slot for mining beams. This would allow CCP to customize ships to be mroe dedicated miners.. eg. The Vexor could become a good deep space mining ship... it has the ability to defend itself in a good way, has good drone space but could mount 6-7 mining beams using the 'new' type of high slot. They then could make it so BS cant use many or no mining beams and leave them to be the Dedicated Fighting ship they should be. It would allow CCP to give us a more defined role for the ships they make. I do find it strange how the best combat ships in the game are also the best mining ships
2) Incorporate solution one in this idea and have CCP make a new vein of ships.. much the same as harvesters for ore in other games...These ships are dedicated mining ships with good cargo space and lots of mining laser slots also. They could have ones that are high level with good defenses for deeper space mining but i would imagine that none of them could attack... therefore the roles of combat cruisors/BS would come into play and they can be assigned to the support roles they should use.
3) Of course they could just take no notice... Many peope are fine with the way things are. Personally i have no problems with mining in a BS. It is the best way to get ore as they have the ability to do it faster than any other ships. The only gripe i have is at a personal level.. In any other game you play, take Homeworld1/2, you have dedicated fighting ships and dedicated mining ships... it makes more sense. You dont see tanks in RL excavating Quarrrys do you?
All in all it is just an idea... one perhaps i will post in EVE idea lab also...but please let me know what you think.

Amazing that a game so dependant upon mining NOT one single ship exists specifically for that purpose. All current ship balancing seems to be based strictly upon combat ability which makes no sense because there is in reality very little combat in this game(I don't consider NPC spawn as combat). SO since combat is practically zilch then what else could battleships have really been designed for...MINING you got it and if you try and use them you for this will find a BIG difference between the races and between lvl 1's and lvl 2's.
Ahh such silly people who thought there was more to this game than mining.

I would agree it would make battleships less of a commedity because you would not be able to use them for mining, but I also would like you to think that in real life things are modified to be other things. In WWII cruise liners were transformed into medical ships or destroyers. This was done with a simple rigging of turrets or medical bays to their ships. The same could be said with this game, the ships are designed to be modified with modules, compenents to enhance its ship. "Hot Swap" if you would like. I know this makes the battleship the ultimate miner, however, you kind of need that kind of armor to mine deep space with 1 escort. I think if you limit the mining rigs available, then you cripple the game. Just IMHO.

hmmm.....
i like the idea of mining class ships.... and speaking of homeworld there should also be a processor class although meybe the indy's will suffice.

Yes. Who heard of the pride of a fleet condemned to mining duties? Battleship should not be mining ship!
Yes, there could be general purpose ships, but they should be at the frig class level.
