I'm considering embarking on the month-long skill training I'll need to be able to pilot a Hulk, but I'm wondering: are Hulks, and Exhumers in general, as good as their descriptions seem to say?
I need to balance long cycle times with general durability. Mining is intensely boring to me, so I only mine when I'm also working on something else (and I do wish I could have a legal macro for automatically transferring ore to a jetcan). Currently, I mine in a Retriever, and the five light drones I can pack in its bay are enough to handle the rats in 0.6 or better systems.
So how tough are Exhumers? Can a Hulk stand up to the rats in a 0.1 or 0.2 system, or even 0.0? I'm not thinking about human pirates, mind, only NPC rats.
If it will let me mine hemorphite while working on a paper or reading or otherwise not paying close attention to the mining, then a Hulk is worth the investment of time.
Any thoughts on the matter?

The hulk IS tougher, but is never going to tank the battleships/battlecruisers or even a cruiser in low sec, not to mention people will bypass entire convoys and other mining operations just to wipe you out in your $500,000,000 barge.

My understanding is the Hulk is extremely resisliant with the correct skills.
Get your exhumers up to 5 or 4 if you don't like the ide aof waiting about a 1month for that to happen.
Then you will want to focus on tactical shield manipulation and load up NPC specific resistances and a shield booster.
I've met people who have successfully tanked BS spawns in their hulk. (Despite what the poster above says)
Barges can have super resistances and correctly setup with passive hardners and skills you'll have no probs.

ecm is probally the best defensive item you can fit ono a mining bardge/exhumer
ive tanked rats in .3 before that had a bc in it

I can tank BS spawns in my skiff with 3 hardeners, a medium extender and two power diags forever. passive ofc.
so they seem tough to me

IIRC, using a small gistii SB on a hulk can tank 0.0 forever

Thanks, that's fantastic news! Although I know some people would take a 40-jump detour to blow up a Hulk for no reason, there are some semi-safe areas in which I can mine. And, of course, I know enough to flee the moment I see someone suspicious in local.  But the NPC spawns were a concern.

Arkanor is wrong the Hulk can and does tank dual and triple BS spawns with the right setup. Put it this way it tanks better than my Apoc ever did.

Passive would probably be sufficient if I had level 5 of whatever compensation skill went along with the types I would be using. However I don't have the patience for that.
My resistances are 37.5% EM, 75% Explosive, 83.125% Kinetic, and 77.5% Thermal. The fourth midslot is a Domination Shield Amp, and one PDU and one Mining Upgrade in lows, realized they don't show in the screens. ;)

Very true Deja, but that still doesnt invalidate the fact that Nee'kita was correct about Hulk tanking and Arkanors ability to comment on how well the Hulk can tank.
I will admit it was a pretty hard slam..but she 100% backed-it up.

This is my setup
With Explosive and kinetic passive skills at L4 I have 87% explo and 81% Kin resistances.

talking as a hulk owner/miner who operates in 0.0 day in day out i cant tank a double angel commander spawn solo while im mining with over 93% resistances

Is the bonus to shield resists currently broken on the Hulk atm? Says 7.5% per level mining barge skill. And the basic resist or Thermal says 40% yet only climbs to 50.5% which suggests the numbers are off, and more in tune with bonus only being 5%/level.
Also, in 0.0 if you get the Hulk to point of being able to tank the spawns can it's drones take out the npc rats? Would going for two ogres or 5 hammerheads be better, if either can even handle it?
