Hey Ive been wondering if I am gimping myself by using one character for all the things I want to do in EVE. I realise I can only train one skill at a time, but am I doing the wrong thing by making a character who can mine/fight/research/manufacture and explore? I ask this as clone costs later obviously be massive and im wondering what people think about using multiple characters in this game. My main issue currently is I cant afford 2 accounts otherwise this would be the perfect option.
Thanks

Edited by: Thellos RazorWing on 12/03/2006 21:12:47 My main char who is about 2 1/2 years old is a generalist who can do just about anything, and I dont regret it.
However, haveing 2 acccounts and spreading the load would be a very smart move. Not only would you gain faster in all areas, But I cant tell you how good it has to have a 2nd account you can use for hauling or picking up loot cans. I myself have 3 accounts now and find it to be very convenient even without considering speeded up training.

Edited by: Felix Cole on 12/03/2006 21:21:52 I love the idea of two accounts, and im sure I could find the funds to pay for it.
My main concern is that ill end up building another character that can do it all on the 2nd account. Plus if I start a 2nd account and start a new guy, ill just end up working all the industrial skills and combat ones and stuff that Ive already spent months training and it will feel like Ive wasted all this time so far on my main. Does anyone else have that thought or feeling with a 2nd account?
Other then being able to haul stuff on the 2nd account what other things do you use your 2nd (or 3rd) accounts for?
I am a bit dazed by all this as Im used to games like Ultima Online where you have 5 characters to build and develop due to skill limits, but in EVE you can do it all with one guy, and I tend to hate doubling up on skills if I can help it.
Thanks again for the thoughts and advice

Basically you use your second character to specialize instead of become another generalist. Naturally this means an overlap of skills. But you will go much deeper into certain areas.
What I am doing with my second account is support my main. My goal is a logistics ship eventually. My second account will also do manufacturing into more depth, while my main will be doing combat and mining. (Including refining as I need high refining skills for the bigger mining lasers with their crystals.)

i refuse to use and alt.As a pirate with sub -9 sec standings it would be easy for me to make an alt to transport ships/mods/loot from high sec for me.I like the fact that i have to suffer somewhat for my actions and feel that im getting an undiluted game experience.

Good for you, Amun.
I completely agree with you on that. Consequences to your actions add spice to the game.

No. You are not 'gimped' It's not a bad idea to have a single character. Stop seeing other people with alts and multiple accounts, and thinking that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Do what you feel happy to do. If that's a single character, then why not? If you feel rich, buy a second account. If you don't know what to do, create your 2 alts and spread the training between them (you'd probably complain about the slow training times though). With a single character, you are forced more to interact with others. Join a Corp where you will get help, and you can help others. I use my alts to play around with the character creation facility and to reply to questions on the forum. My main character is on his own, but has many friends.

I have this as my main who can do everything, but nothing well.
I decided to get a power of two char to do all my hauling and refining been wanting a tec two indy for ages but can not take the skill time out for one now i can :).
If you get a 2nd char best advice is to think "what is that i want to do now but can not" Then think "what do i actuall need a 2nd char to do for me that i can not now?" And you will probley answer your own question. ----------------------------------------------

When (if) you set foot into 0.0 and/or join an alliance and get involved in 0.0 politics, warfare and camping, you'd be so glad you went with an alt :-)
I trained my main as industrial originally, but ended up with half of my 27 mil skillpoints in guns and ships. My alt makes me money for me so I can lose ships. Just flying them back up to 0.0 is a pain.

I use more or less just my main, except for the price checking for which I use 2 alts... and I sometimes buy stuff with them even though it would be cheaper to buy with main since both alts have 0 trained skills
basicaly you can do everything with just 1 char, it just takes a bit longer
getting second account for specialising only means you don't have to switch to industry or science skills to do something but can continue training combat skills... or the other way around... but since you would use alt this isn't the case...
one thing to remember is that if you use alt you will most likely have to train some skills on both alts
Course once you've seen one Yeti you've seen them all.

I like a lot of others have 2 seperate accounts, my main has training all over the place. My alt is very focused, he has a 28mem and 24int. I use him to train all the manufacturing and refining skills. There is skill overlap, but my alt has 3mil in industry skills, 1.5mil in mechanical skills and 2mil in science skills while my main is no where near that.

I like many players I fly with and have interacted with, run multiple accounts. I have some in alt corps supporting me in empire when wars are on and others in my main corp supporting me in my day to day EVE time.
Its been well over a year since I last ran a single client of EVE on my PC. Even in the small amounts of PVP I've done there are usually 2 of my characters in the vacinity either supporting each other or collectivly shooting at the same target.
Some haul, some fight some research and others build. Since going from a single account to multiple accounts my experience and wealth have increased dramatically as these new area's of the game have been opened up as a result of their varying skill sets.
I highly recommend doing it IF you can afford it in RL currency. Training is a real problem but with some of the various tools out there in the EVE community you can manage and plan your characters growth very well.

IMO alts completely kill the game. You lose immersion in it. -----------------------------------------------

i've been using one account for almost three years now, but i've just got a 2nd account which i'm planning on getting to join one of the northern alliances (i've been a southerner all my life).
I want to see what the political climate will be like looking from the other side of the fence so to speak. Mind you, knowing about an incoming fleet before they even leave their home region might have an advantage as well

I agree. I have played other MMOs with multiple accounts, and the last one I quit, I decided that I would never do that again.
There are multiple reasons, all equally important.
1) It does reduce enjoyment of the game and turns you into a powergamer.
2) It's a lot more work. Gaming is supposed to be relaxing, not a second job. I don't care anymore if I'm less productive with only one account. It's a game.
3) It reduces your need for other players. Why should I become 100% self-reliant in an online game? I be that in any game. There is more that makes an MMO good than just the chat window.

I am a Miner/Combat pilot I'm going to get a retriever, then skill up towards flying a BS, then switch to getting a covetor.
I'll never make an alt.

The only reason I started a second account was because I wanted to fly something other than Gallente ships once in a while. Small minmatar ships are so much fun and kick so much ass.
You'll quickly run into problems if you're trying to be a generalist and want multiple race's ships (partial exception: harpy/eagle for gallente specialists - then again thats still a problem with typical gallente perception amounts). I suggest sticking to just one race until you're satisfied with your industrial skills. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |
