Ah, the first PvP adrenaline bloodrush. It's insane really.
My first was at the beginning of the Great Northern War in 2004 and I was in 0.0 with no PvP experience, at a small gate camp, supposed to be scrambling in my BB. In jumps a misinformed Scorpion and I manage to lock, scramble and web although my hands are shaking like crazy. Afterwards I get asked on TS if I have any pulse. All I manage to convey is a muffled "gaaaah".
Nowadays the rush is no longer frighteningly close to a heartattack. I only really get my heart racing in some 1v1 and 1vMany situations.
I wonder why there is so much adrenaline, almost everyone seems to experience this in their first few encounters? It must have something to do with the MMORPG setting, harsh death penalties, and personal pride? ----------------------------------------------

I did my first PvP way back in 2003 in an Omen which had taken me weeks to earn. Cruisers back then took a long time to earn...
It was an RP player created event with the goal to pop this character for what was then a huge bounty - I think it was 3 million isk or so.
Anyway I tracked this individual down and jumped into the system he was hiding. There were two other people in local Drunkenmaster and Viceroy of the then infamous Space Invaders.
Viceroy immediately told me to leave as they were after the bounty themselves and they would shoot if I got in the way.
I decided to risk it. The pod was jumping between planets and moons and we all started scouring them. It was basically a game of Russian roulette and my heart was pounding faster than it has ever pounded before.
Suddenly I landed at a moon and there was the pod. This was so surprising to me that I think it took me a few seconds to lock it - I got about two shots off and it managed to warp... Damn - so close.
Things then got worse. Viceroy jumped in and immediately attacked. I have to say that I almost crapped my pants. I shot back but my noobness meant that his cruiser was eating through my precious Omen's shields faster than a knife through butter and Drunkenmaster then arrived too.
In a state of panic I hit the warp out button and the alignment seemed to take forever. When the warp came up I have never been so relieved in my life. My Omen made it out on about 10% structure... but the adrenaline was amazing.
I decided that I had had enough for one evening and risked a dash for the system gate. Fortunately it was not guarded.
My hands didn't stop shaking for an hour :)
Have done lots of PvP since then and none have matched that original rush - though some have come close. I still however get the adrenaline kick when commanding a fleet and know that a battle is imminient.
When you're at a gate and the enemy fleet jumps the 15 secs till they uncloak and all hell breaks loose is still a fantastic tension builder especially waiting to find out if you have been called primary or not --------------------------------- Smiting pirates and terrorists since Sept 2003

well done on the kill matey :)
My first pvp experience, i was a week-and-a-bit old ratting in lowsec with a duramaller. I was engaged by a solo pirate in a flipping blackbird who jammed & disrupted me. The one time i managed to get a lock i tore through his shields, but he rejammed next cycle and kept me jammed. It took what seemed like hours to break my tank - all the floating aimlessly in space, unable to lock or warp, browsing the market for a new ship.
I switched to frigates after that, they're way more fun!
no skills, just luck.

cool story! i'm gonna be starting my 1st pvp/ratting adventure in the next few mins hehe.. wish me luck! ( i really hope another player rat doesnt kill me, what a waste!)
But yes, EvE has deffinately excited me, bum clenchingly lol, even as the victim trying to get through b4 targeting finishes, great rush! Only other game this exciting has been freelancer & 1nsane 4x4
What really puts the atmos down are the griefers who kill u in a fraction of a second(because their ship is uber powerful), usually 'just for the hell of it', but i'm not moaning, i hope to train up and pop those byatches :)
nice story tho.. and remember the best way to get more feelings like this, always go for the challenge not the easy kill!

Where else do u get that feeling, from a videogame? I dont tink EvE deserves the name "Videogame" anymore. Its just a unrealistic dream.

Great story. My first PVP experience was just a few weeks ago, when the corp I joined a week before that ended up going to war with three other corporations and I got thrown into it headfirst. We kicked ass and took names, I got my first killmail in my second or third engagement, and it was boatloads of fun, but as much PVP as I've been doing lately, I STILL get that rush.
I'm convinced that every PVPer, with any amount of experience goes through the same moment when they get locked or they lock their enemy. "oh crap oh crap, stuff's about to go down, what do i do?!" and the most successful PVPers are just the ones who get out of that moment faster than their enemy.

Well, that adrenaline rush is what makes the game so great, and so different to anything else.
I get it less in PvP now, but when travelling alone in 0.0 down a pipe my heartrate often goes through the roof... its not what *is* happening, its the expectation that something is *about* to happen.
Especially when you have a cargohold of BPO's :p

Edited by: Wrayeth on 15/03/2006 13:14:57 I still forget my drones sometims.
That's what I get for flying races that don't have large drone bays (typhoon being an exception...except I've never actually flown one).
As for the OP, I see that I no longer need to give my "If you only knew the power of the Dark Side..." speech. -Wrayeth |

Edited by: Heraklitus Nomidzon on 15/03/2006 20:37:47 Welcome to the best part of the game.
Once you start, you never go back. That rush you describe is why most of us play the game.

Nice read ;)
Makes me want to log in and go on a friendly patrol through low sec.
Never seen a game that has the same affect on me as EVE's pvp. Nothing as rewarding as a hard fight with a successful kill or ransom at the end of it. Nothing like spending the whole next day thinking about ship setups and strategies after losing a ship. What a great addiction.
