1x Xlarge SB 1x Shield boost amp 1 2X active Hardner <Low Named> 1x Large Shield Ext 2 1x Shield Recharge 2<Not sure about this>
2x BCU <tech 2's Tommarrow> 2x PDU 2 1x Back up sensor <damn Gurista>

You could try changing the extender and shield recharger for Cap recharger IIs.
Its very difficult to get a Raven shield tank to last forever. The only way is with expensive mods like Gistii shield boosters which use a lot less cap, good skills (shield compensation 5).
You can also drop the Shield boost amp and put on another Kinetic hardner. Furthermore, you could buy some crystal impants to boost shield boosting. Also, Energy systems operation 5 and energy management 5 are a must.

Try to put in a PDU II instead of the backup array. Further, use a named booster and 3 hardeners and a cap II. This is way better then the non-named + 2 + extended, for it gets you a lot more effective hp/cap, so you dont need to boost as often as you did earlier.

Against guristas you need 2x kin ,1x therm hardeners. Get a C5L or tech II Xlarge boost. Theres no real need for the etender or the recharger since your using an active tank. Two cap recharger IIs will give you a lot more cap to play with.
Edit:
Use kinetic missiles too. Best against tanked guristas.

This will last forever:
six torpedoes to kill battleships, or six crusie if you are going up against a lot of crusiers/have high missile skills
2 heavy nos ---
1 large booster (preferebly named i supose)
3 active hardners
1 booster amp 1 cap recharger (euthenic, t2) OR 2 cap rechargers
--- 5 PDU2's
taken from the l4 mission-running sticky

Edited by: Shojjin on 14/03/2006 11:32:38 Wasnt gurista that got me this time Some slaver Mission. I just felt kinda Gimped cause I could not do enough damage to kill one BS, and had to run away Like 5 times Finally gave up. I know I need more training in the missle skills and a few In enginering. Was just seeing if i had a major BUG with my setup. Kinda sounds like I do. Will swap some stuff around and try again. Maybe with better luck. I HOPE!

You have active and passive tank mixed there.
Drop shield extender and recharger. Use Heavy Capacitor Booster with 800's and 3rd hardener instead.
3x Invulnerability Field II as hardeners isn't so bad either.

I don't find there to be much a problem with the Raven tbh. Breaking tank does sometimes depend on getting a little assistance from my drones however. Here's my Mission/NPC setup that I like a lot...
High: 6 Cruiser Launchers (best named I can affort), 1 drone Link Augmentor (+20km drone range) Med: 3 Hardners (usually Invulnerability IIs), 1 SB Amp, 1 XLarge SB II, 1 Heavy Electromechanical Cap Booster (with 800s) Low: 3 PDU IIs, 2 Ballistic Controls
Drones: 7 Hammerhead IIs (5 deployable at a time)
I carry about 7 Cap Booster 800s in my hold (+ 4 loaded in the Injector). This enables me to sustain my tank for a very long time, even when going through sustained periods of NPC abuse. Large BSs take a bit of a pounding with cruise, so the Drone Link Aug helps to hit those ones that like to stay at 50k out - my drones have a range of about 60k+.
Hope this is some food for thought...
Cheers, Yarek.

Personally I cannot see anything wrong with that setup of yours. I have very similar setup for NPCing (last few weeks I have spent at north fighting guristas, so setup is anti-Guristas): 6x 'malkuth' cruise 1x heavy nos 1x tractor beam
1x XLarge CL-5 SB 1x SB amplifier 1x Large Shield Extender (T2) 2x kinetic hardener (T1) 1x thermal hardener (T1)
2x BCU (T1) 3x PDU (T1)
I use thermal and kinetic cruise missiles and 5x Hammerhead T1 (anti frigs). Looks like your setup is even better than mine (T-9000's). So the answer is train your missile skills. I have all missile support skills at lvl 4 and i did not have any problems with breaking dread guristas BS tank(5 or 6 mil bounty).

If you know that you will be facing alot of BSs you can try fitting 3x Siege + 3x Cruise. Drop the backup array. It was prooven that it is not working against guristas. Make sure that you have right missiles against your target. It's useless to fight Guristas with explosive ammo etc. Right ammo and right hardeners are key to success.
Looks like you dont like to change your setup from mission to mission (constantly fitted backup sensor). It's really easy to adjust to every mission. And it makes things alot easier. - ------------------------------------------- sig stolen :( |

Drop the Backup Array. Won't help you against Guristas anyway.
The Shield Extender makes your shield last longer, but impedes on your shield booster effiecency. SHield Extenders actually helps on a shield tank, because you can withstand vicious assaults longer, but one is quite enough.
Drop the Shield Recharger, go for a Cap recharger instead.
And last: Xlarge SB is NOT to be run forever. Set it to "Manual" and activate it with enough interval so that your capacitor can recharge. 10-15 seconds is usually enough.
(oh, and train Energy Sys Operation and energy management to 4-5)
(oh, and shield compensation as well) ----------------------------------------------- My Band's new Demo: Linkage to Torrent |

I use the following on my Raven for Guristas High: 6x CMLII, 2x whatever you want med: 1x XlII Booster, 2x ThII hard, 2x KiII hard, 1x LII Extender Low: 5x PDUII
Tanks like a beast. Against 1 or 2 BS with support I rarely have to use the booster. With implants and skills i land around 12000-13000 shield (can't remember ) and around 80% resistance for Th/Ki. The resistances and shield-hp make a wonderful passive tank. Hardeners is changed depending on enemy. With high missileskills it making toast of any NPC out there.

No one seems to be using Damage Control. Is it just not worthwhile on a Raven?

well, damage control lets you hull tank... but if you do that, GMs will come and ban you from the game for Crimes Against Nature. since only your booster (and to an extent your Invulnerability Fields,) use capacitor, you want to maximize damage repair.
a power diagnostic II in your low helps your tanking much better than a few extra points of damage resistance.

I dont know man. The Internal Force Field Array I damage control is pretty damn nice vs a pdu. You not only get the 58% hull resists and armor resistances but 15% extra across the board with shield resist.

I use a Damage Control. Best available.
I think it works better then another PDUII.
The damage control reduces all incoming damage by 10 or so percent, and at best the PDUII would only grant me an extra two or three points of shield regen. And even though the cap bonus on the PDUII would allow me to run the booster a little bit more often, I think the damage control actually permits to run it less often, since each shield point is made tougher.

1 large booster II, amp, 4 hardeners
3 pds II, 2 bcs II
Woot, you win!?
Just stop using cruise missiles to npc with. Torps are still the win. -------------------------------------------- "A plan is just a list of things that don't happen." -- Parker, _The Way of the Gun_

How can you figure that? Some of the new NPC cruisers have crazy resists, most of the battleship sized oppenents have small siq radiuses, and torps take forever to take down a target if there's some distance.

Use 1 active kin hardner, and an invul field I find. Large shield extender, xl booster, cap charge (best named)
In lows, 2xpdu II, 3xBCU II,
Works well for me, but screw cruise, use torps. -

well before i went to scorpion, this is what i had in me rav(and i could do all the lvl 4's solo, though i had to warp out a time or two on some of em)
high: 6 x xt-9000 2 x heavy diminishing NOS Med:(and in this order) 1 x Xlsboostr T2 1 x emp S hardener T2 1 x Therm S hardener T2 2 x Invul S hardener T2 1 x Cap rechargr T2 Low: 1 x Internal Force Field array 1 4 x PDU T2
Needless to say Skills are what makes ya in this game. Take the time to maxx out your attributes then(if your gonna shield tank) all your eletronic, engineering and shield and capacitor related skillz. Yea it'll take a long Long time, but sooo worth it.

On the Invul tank, 2x Invul II is really the most invuls you can use, and have it still be worth it, as a third Invul only adds ~2% to your ship's resists. You are better off adding a second shield boost amp, or CPR II, than you are fitting the third I2.

the CPR will hurt your shield boosting though.
Maybe once CCP adds some midslot cap regen mods that nerf armor tanking it'll be all good.

NPC Setup:
6 Cruise Launchers, 2 Heavy NOS (or 1 heavy NOS and 1 tractor beam)
Large Shield Booster II, 2 Kinetic Shield Hardeners, 2 thermal shield hardeners, shield boost amplifier
4 Power Diaggnostic II, 1 Ballistic Control II
5 Medium drones (Vespa for Guristas)
Upgrade your modules as soon as you can, and things will become easier. (along with skills)
If you have a decent large shield booster and a named/officer shield amp, you'll be able to sit there a lot longer and take damage.
