Yesterday I started a thread in New Citizen asking if/why only one character per account can actively train skills.
I received some great responses from a really cool community and that helped a lot to get over the disappointment.
It did get me thinking though if there might be a better way to do it.
I can justify spending $15 a month to play EVE, but I can't justify spending $30 or $45...that's a tank of gas or almost our entirely monthly internet bill.
However, I would definitely pay $15 a month and an additional $5 per month per for each additional trainable character slot. Whether it is a permanent account upgrade or something like "Alt PLEX" it would be something that I would buy.
My first question is - am I alone in thinking that would be a good value?
My second question, because I'm still new and don't have a firm grasp of the game & economy is - Is it a good idea? My thought process is:
Multiple Accounts Still Have Value People who have multiple separate accounts would still keep their most valuable assets: - The ability to multi-box - True anonymity
More People Could Expand & Explore You can train one character to be a jack of all trade and the career agent missions do give you an alright sense of what to expect, but I'm currently following a 20+ day training path based on what I've seen so far, but I might be wrong. As someone pointed out in my original thread, that consequence is important philosophically, but it's also likely to discourage folks who would be good citizens otherwise from sticking around after the first month. It's also possible that a current long time trader might truly be a combat pilot at heart or visa versa and this would give them a chance to find out.
CCP Could Actually Come Out Ahead Even my gut reaction is that everyone would consolidate all of their characters and reduce CCP's monthly income, which would be bad for the game. However: 1.) Multi-box players wouldn't consolidate. 2.) The number of single account players upgrading might offset the consolidated accounts by themselves. 3.) The players who are saving money each month are more likely to spend their savings on PLEX, which would offset the loss further AND stimulate the economy. 4.) The new, cheaper "Alt PLEX" would also stimulate the economy as well as give players who use ISK only for game time the ability to have multiple trainable alts too.
This isn't a fist slamming demand or anything, just an idea that I thought might be interesting. Thoughts?

Show me a game where you can train multiple characters on the same account at the same time. "Just because I seem like an idiot, doesn't mean I am one." ~Unknown |

That's not really the question, it's how many games have full featured alts available and the answer to that is pretty much every game.
Skill advancement and offline leveling are core parts of the EVE experience for you main character. The way it is now you have one full character and two second class characters. |

Actually the question should be "Show me the game where you can train multiple characters at the same time for free."
I'm not opposed to introducing a fee for allowing training of alts on the same account, but I think $5 is too low.
That said, I think you're fighting a losing battle. Unless you're proposing using PLEX for it, CCP would actually lose money on this deal, since the fee you're looking at is actually less than they get for an alt account. And if you're going to spend a PLEX, you may as well get a second account, since you'd get more utility for the same money (i.e. the ability to log the character in at the same time to help with things like mining, salvaging, etc).
tl;dr: Charging a lower fee than a monthly sub is not in CCP's best interests (esp now). Charging the quivalent of a monthly sub is not in the player's best interests. Conclusion, while not necessarily a bad idea, it has little chance of passing the "we need more monies" filter. Unsub or don't.-á I don't care what your reasons are, and neither does anyone else.-á Just click the button and go away - or don't. |

It was buried in the wall of text (I should learn to be more concise), but one of the keys was creating $5 "Alt PLEX" for this. |

I don't think this will work. It will create a situation in which there would be a proliferation of more alts being sold in the Character Bazaar. As a result, the ISK value of each alt being sold will drop in the same way as minerals have due to an overabundance of characters being sold for ISK. |

But that's exactly my point.
Right now, if you want to train two characters, you pay (in USD) 2x$14.95 = 29.90 Under your proposal you would have to pay $14.95 + $5.00 = $19.95 - that's a net loss of almost $10 per alt account that gets closed per month.
Now, take me for example. I have four account for which I pay roughloy $60 a month. under your proposal I could easily collapse that down to two accounts (since that's the most I ever log in), and save myself about $20 a month. Which means CCp is getting $20 a month less from me.
If we make the assumption that's an average savings and there are (again, assuming) 1,000 people who can see the same savings, and take them, CCP is suddenly making $20k less per month - that's nearly a quarter of a million dollars a year.
yes, I just made those numbers up, but you can see how this adds up very fast, and in terms of a company that has already admitted they're running low on liquid capital, it's not a step they are likely to take.
tl;dr: If I said "Hey give me $15 and I'll give you $5 back" would you seriously think it was a good deal for you? Unsub or don't.-á I don't care what your reasons are, and neither does anyone else.-á Just click the button and go away - or don't. |

I guess the big question would be with only two accounts instead of four, would you be more likely to buy PLEX or mini-PLEX with the extra money?
You're absolutely right though that right off the top it seems like CCP would lose money, but the more I thought about it I wasn't actually sure. |

Good catch...I forgot to factor in the character bazaar in my thinking. Is it a really active marketplace? |

Yes people spend billions every day in that market. Look if you want a second character why don't you wait till you can buy plex with your main then start a second account, you can get off a 21 day trial to paid with plex, then your main gets a plex. That's practically 2 free months of gameplay. Plus you get the benefit of logging into 2 characters at the same time. If you tried that on 1 account it will kick you offline on the first client. |
