Arr!
As a budding n00b pirate I'd like some comments on my current setup.
Ship: Merlin
Highslots 2 x 75mm 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon I (Thorium Charges) 2 x Standard Missile Launcher I (Using Sabertooth and Pirahna while enemy has shield, and swapping Sabertooths to Flameburst when shields are gone)
Medslots 1MN Afterburner I Small Shield Booster I J5B Phased Prototype Warp Inhibitor I Small Shield Extender I
Lowslots Power Diagnostic System I Capacitator Power Relay I
Char is about 2 days old, with 133'500 SP
Oh, and got my first kill earlier today... An Imicus mining happily away in a belt in Hevrice. Orbited at 10km, started scrambling, and introduced him to my firetailed little friends... Unfortunately a -10 pirate from WOR warped in and popped me right after. **** happens

Havent really tried the merlin, but MWD's are a good thing on Frigates (at least on my rifter it is) since you need to get to 7,5 km.. and if you're 30 km away they will warp out if ur not fast enough.. ------------------------------------------------
Arr! I stab at thee |

Edited by: Na''Thuul on 15/03/2006 21:30:07 My Inhibitor has 20km range, and given my young age, most people don't concider me a threat yet, even when I start targeting them :P
edit... my bad, discovered now I had fitted a 7,5km scram. used a 20km on last setup.

Yup, the CPR limits the effectivness of your booster, whereas the PDU makes everything nice. Otherwise it's a very solid setup for a merlin. Good job. ---- I <3 Taranis

Yep I think you have a good setup. Someone mentioned a mwd, it can be invaluable. With a 20km scram it will help you keep distance and with 7.5km you can get to them before warp out.

Remember I'm a pvp noob myself, but here's my current Merlin setup. It works GREAT as part of a gang, but my 1:1 combat experience with it are very limited, only a few solo engagements. I won them all, but they took a long time, and two got away because my cap ran out.
High slots : 2x standard launcher (EMP missiles), 1 small pulse with radio - not enough grid or power for anything else in high slot.
Mid slots : 7.5 (or 20km) jammer, dampener, disruptor, multispectral ECM 4.4 strength (low end named ECM)
Low slots : small armor repper I, cap power relay
I purposefully do not put anything expensive in the rig, because I know how crunchy it is. However I have been in two fights where the enemy never got to hit me even once. If they can't target me, and have no drones, they might as well just sit there and wait for the ransom message, if I choose to give one, which I normally don't do.
I have a lot of skills in electronics and engineering to make the fitting and power requirements work (for a week-old character anyway) and I can still run out of power in an engagement over a couple minutes. In a couple weeks I might be able to add a NOS to the last high slot - maybe. |

Problems I see with your setup is that you're not using the Merlins bonus. Use 75mm railguns and you get 40% range bonus on them. With thorium ammo you can comfortably orbit your target at 7000m, thus staying out of small nos range and blast away.
With my setup i can run my scrambler, AB, guns and launchers for 2 weeks straight without drying up my cap. Shieldbooster bleeds it fast though, so can't have that on for more than 5-6 boosts at a time...
Changed relay for a second Power diag. btw, worked great.
What missiles would you guys recommend? I've been using bloodclaws on both launcers a little and that seems to work very well. Is there really any point in messing with different missiles, having to swap in the middle of a fight?

looks like a good setup to me, given how new you are i would say you're either an alt, or you're a natural pvper, taking advantage of the merlins bonuses, taking things like small nos into account, and a pretty good setup. keep at it and you'll go far. ---

Edited by: Na''Thuul on 16/03/2006 03:46:54 I've carebeared in empire for about a month, but quickly figured out that was not for me and made a new character starting fresh on the darker path. So I'm 110% n00b at PvP, but have learned some basics about how things work, and also I have read pretty much every guide on the forums.
Oh.. and about the 40% bonus, that is ofcourse with Caldari Frig lvl4 (10% per skill level) just said what I have on mine without thinking...
"Methinks the ship be sinkin lads!" "Why captn'?" "Me grog tastes salty...."

Heh, the only reason I'm in a Merlin at all is that the Merlin has one more low slot than the Griffin. Eventually I will be able to actually put bonus-specific weapons in the Merlin, but probably won't - I eventually see two nosses in the top slot, in fact I think I'll start training towards that after Electronics Warfare 3 stops training. I can put one nos in now if I take the laser out, which might actually let me run the armor repairer in combat if I ever need to.
For me and the Merlin - the mid slots are ALL EW, unless I am travelling a long ways, then I'll temporarily mount an AB, or if I'm in a highly mobile gang, then, again, I'll mount an AB.
It doesn't bother me that it takes me longer to kill something, if they can't hit me :) It does add to the possibilities of them calling in help in time to assist them, but that's a risk we all take, especially when we ransom. |
