I was ganged up with a friend of mine who just started, and we were in a complex. Just to try some things out, I open fire on him, and all of a sudden, Concord shows up. I was under the impression that gang members could fire on one another and not elicit a police response. What did I do wrong? |

.... You cant fire on gang members.

I thought that was why general wisdom was that you don't ever gang with someone you don't know, because they can fire on you without consequence.
Maybe these crazy ideas are just popping into my head from nowhere.

No, you don't gang with random people because there's a strong possibility that they're simply an alt of a griefer in a dummy corp who's been declared on by the player's real corporation. Either that or they've got an aggression timer on for looting a can.

Read the infor when you gang someone or have been invited to gang with someone. It clearly states that you cannot shoot gang members, it also tells if the person you are ganging with is at war

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not sure where I got my ideas. Is there any way you can safely spar with someone outside your corp? |

The safest way is proabably to venture to a .4 system and fight around a moon, but I believe you will get a sec status hit for agression.
In high sec, you could jettison a can, and let your friend take it. You can then duel as long as you are the first to shoot. This won't work if your in a gang together though. You can tell if you can shoot without concord because your buddy will flash red in your overview (on default settings).
Personally I would always choose to duel in low sec, concord give me the creeps

You can shoot at each other BUT you need to be in the same corp. Else....... wel you know what happends :) I made the same mistake LOL

Your probably mistaking this with people gang inviting you so they can warp directly to you and attack you - saves them the hassle of hunting you down.
