I just started playing last night. I like the game, but am having some difficulties after completing the tutorial.
There's alot of Ibis's hanging around the few complexes available. I decided to take out pirates if I could snag them and mine nearby while waiting for respawn.
The first thing I found was that the Ibis's cargo hold is tiny. If I mine 2.5 asteroids my hold is full and I need to head back to the station to unload. My first priority was to make enough to afford a Bantam, the cheapest frigate available.
Once i went through two accelleration gates in the complex I found that my beginner's gun can't even hit the pirates, or, it say I score an excellent shot but for 0.0 damage.
So I am reduced to mining only in order to afford a Bantam, then more efficient mining until I can afford some decent weapons at least, if not some defensive measures.
So my questions: Is this normal? Am I headed down the right road? What kind of beginner weapons should I choose?
I dunno, any advice you think would be helpful would be appreciated.

normally, the missions you do with the first agents earn you enough money to buy a new frigate and some equipment with it. after "finishing" the tuturial (there is in fact no end to learning ) your agent suggests you leave for another agent. the 2nd agent will give you 8 or 9 missions, so called storyline missions. you should really do those missions - in the end you'll get an implant. those missions are designed for newbies and are really easy to do, don't miss that chance .

Your experience seems to parallel my own pretty closely. It seems like things are really dragging, but I discovered that it really doesn't take long to build to a Bantam, and then it doesn't take long after that to build to a Badger, and then things get easier in a hurry.

For some reason, the newbie gun likes to be annoying like that. Dock, take it off of your ship at the Fitting screen, right-click it (in your Items window) and repackage it, then put it back on.
Of course, it'd be even better if you bought a 75mm gatling rail and some ammo (try Small Lead Charge S to begin with) and used that. It does a lot more damage, and never has that problem.
Most miners deal with the small cargo hold problem by jetissoning their ore, and coming back for it with an industrial ship when they're done mining.
And if you want NPC pirates to fight, go to 0.8 (or maybe 0.7, depending on how well you do in 0.8) and fly through the asteroid belts looking for them. You may have to go to several belts before you see one though.

Thanks for the help. To tell you the truth: I diddn't really finish the tutorial. It got a bit late my first play session and during my second session I got sidetracked.
I'll finish out the tutorial (think I'm almost done), then hit up the newb mission for the frigate.
Seriously though, I don't understand weapons at all. Could someone make me a recommendation or point me at some sort of explanation of how they work. I understand ship size/blast size and the velocities, but not damage types.

Edited by: Tulthix on 16/03/2006 15:17:40 This won't help with damage types, but: click the player guide on the left of this webpage, and at the bottom read the tracking and missile guide if you haven't already
Default resists are something like: Shield Resistances: EM: 0%, Expl: 60%, Kin: 40%, Therm: 20% Armour Resistances: EM: 60%, Expl: 10%, Kin: 25%, Therm: 35%
Some rats are different though, like angels are explosive vulnerable across the board and sanshas are em/thermal vulnerable across the board.
Honestly for level 1 missions resists don't matter that much. They do start mattering running level 2 missions though. You'll want to look up the rat you are fighting in a database like npc.elfarto.com and see its vulnerabilities.
Also be sure to see what damage types your enemy is dealing and make sure you are strong where they are going to hit you. For example if you are going to shield tank sanshas, you're going to need some em/thermal hardening badly. This also won't matter much on level 1 missions but will start having an impact on level 2's.

There be a good guide (some parts are a little old, but the basics remain the same) stickied in this forum. ----------------------------------------------- My Band's new Demo: Linkage to Torrent |

Make sure you check the optimal range on your guns and orbit or stay that distance from your target. Many times this is the problem for noobs who are too close to their target and cannot hit it at all or do no damage.

Tulthix, do you know where I can find like ~15-20k bounty Sanshas?

Ok, I found the weapon guide (stickied at the top of this subforum /smacks forehead) and picked up alot there.

I checked my gun's range and have that set as a default orbit and 'keep at range' distance. I diddn't think of this though. Those few npcs *were* getting rather close.

I've noticed that it's sometimes difficult to maintain range or orbit distance from a target. I assumed at first that my ship was malfunctioning in some way, then I decided that the rats were closing on me. Too close and it becomes hard to hit them. I added an afterburner and that made it a lot easier to either maintain distance or get back to distance, so you might want to try that.

I've been eyeballing an afterburner and a new gun, probably in the reverse order. Right now, though, I think I need to get myself into a Bantam as priority 1.

I put two 75mm railguns on my Ibis and they worked fine. Ibis is capable of a lot more, I discovered, than people generally give it credit for.

Some beginner agents offer you a nice frigate to help get you started in exchange for a small LP charge.

Get something other than the newb gun, such as a 75mm and some ammo (as suggested above). Do the deadspace complex missions and/or fly quickly to each of the complexes and kill and loot any pirates/training drones. The loot gained from that will usually be much more than what you can gain by mining in the ibis.
I did that to get a bantam, then used the bantam to mine and do some missions until I could get a Condor. IMO the Condor with its speed and with an Afterburner and 2 Missile Launchers is the ultimate Level 1 mission runner :)
