I was reading the Crime and Punishment section of the forum and read a post talking about instas. "OMG, j00 n00b. You should have set instas." or "I managead to get away because of the insta I set." So, what is an Insta? _______________________________________ Everything has a price. What's yours?

An "insta" is a place bookmark that's set to "overshoot" your destination, so that there's no "flying time" to dock/jump. When you exit your next station, fly up to the center of it above/below it, manually. Set a bookmark in the People & Places on your NeoComm. Now warp to another station/destination, then warp back to the bookmark.
You will come out of warp in docking range of the station, so it's instantly accepted. Using an insta for a jump gate lets you warp in and jump, usually before anyone can even get a target lock on you.

(e.g. Warp Gate, Station, Mining Location, etc.)

They work well, considering that a large faction of the PC Pirate population on here whines about how they prevent people being being ambushed (and thus, deny PC Pirates opportunity and income).
The main drawback is that you have to set them ahead of time or get them from someone else.

so pretend you are jumping into a .0 with your condor (the fastest ship you have) to set some instas for use later. How would you set an insta at the .0 gate if you didn't already know where you would be coming from?
Would you have to: Say, okay... I'm going to be going to BFW-ZZ planet X on my next route. Jump through to BFW-ZZ and warp to planet X. Then warp back to the jump gate and go 15km past the gate and set a bookmark. That insta would ONLY work if you were coming from planet X or somewhere around planet X. If you were to come from the total opposite direction wouldn't you end up being 30km from the jumpgate?
How do you get around this? Just set instas for every direction you might be coming from?

Well, you can't :) .. That only works well with stations as they are so damn big. Originally by: LUGAL MOP'N'GLO f you were to come from the total opposite direction wouldn't you end up being 30km from the jumpgate?
Correct. Originally by: LUGAL MOP'N'GLO How do you get around this? Just set instas for every direction you might be coming from?
Well, you'll usually want to go from one gate to another. Instead of warping to the object you wanna warp from and back, just go behind the gate when you're at it, and use the icons for your 2 objects (ie. gate 1 and gate 2 or station and gate 1 etc) to find a spot for the insta. For small gates you should be 12km behind the gate in "perfect alignment" with the 2 gates when you make the bm.
I usually make all the instas I need (all g2g usually) at one gate at a time.

How does it work to buy instas? Can you buy them on escrow or something? How do I give someone my bookmarks??

The are number of sell orders on Escrow and some sellers in Trade forums.
To copy BMs from you to others, just shift+drag'n'drop them from your People&Places to your hangar - it makes the copy them. Then just trade or use corp hangar+cans etc.

Hi,
I use an alternate character to make insta's in a dangerous system. The way I do it: I warp in to the system, and I autopilot to a station. On the way there, while in warp, I drop a bookmark. After I get to the station, I warp to the new marker. I name this marker something like "Safe spot in [name of system]." I create all my insta's by warping from this marker. That way, I'm always approaching the gate from the same direction, this gives me safe spot to hide from pirates.
After I mark all my insta's, I escrow them (for free) to my main character. Using my main character, I claim the escrow and add the markers to my "people and places."
Sorry if all already know all this, but I meant this post for new players.
Have fun!

Another trick: if you make an instadock bookmark basically in the middle of a station (ie, flying to the middle of the station), that instadock bookmark will work from any location in the system. Great for evading enemies, pirates, etc.

As a new player, THANKS for the great info. I have been digging in the forums for this info using eve-search and couldn't find it. Thanks again!

Very nice. I can't believe that I've never thought of that before, very clever. Thanks for the info.
