I just earned enough for a battleship and trained in the skills needed to run one. I love combat missions and have run into a problem with my new battleship. I cant hit the broad side of a barn! I have trained in gunnery V, carefully purchased weapons and ammunition to allow me to engage enemies at optimal ranges, but I CANT hit anything! I am doing level 2 and 3 combat missions, the targets being a mix of frigates and cruisers, but the varying signature radiuses of those targets doesnt seem to make a difference. Why do large battleship sized weapons SUCK so badly?

Heh. How far away are you trying to use the guns? Even with Motion Prediction at 4, I hear you want over 40km of distance to shoot frigates with battleship guns.

With level 2 and 3 missions it's likely most of the targets are too small for large guns to be effective with your skills. Theres a reason people have 6 mil + SP in gunnery skills and yet can only use one type of gun .
Aside from that your tank should be able to hold up easy so try 'approach' ing targets instead of orbiting or such this will result in far better hits (until you get too close of course). You should be able to get a system setup where you pick a certain target at a specific range (depending on guns + ammo choice) then approach it and pretty much insta pop it.
Overall a battleship is simply too much for level 2 + 3 missions in my opinion, better off sticking to smaller ships/guns.

Why are you doing L2 and 3 missions in a BS? That's serious overkill. Use the right ship and guns for the job and you won't have a problem.

If your in a BS you really dont need all those slots for tanking or whatever, stick 2 or hell even 3 webbies in your medium slots Sit still in the middle of the spawn and web them to the floor when there moving at like 1 ms your guns shouldnt have any problem wasting anything a lvl2/3 throws at you.

if you fly gallente ships, a brutix with nos, medium guns, great armor tank, and drones will be able to take down anything thrown your way

When shooting with big guns against small targets you should also use target painters. They increase the signature radius of the target and make them easier to hit.
As was said above. Large guns is the wrong type for missions that only have frigates and cruisers, so you might be better of fitting your mighty battleship with small and medium guns. |

They don't.
If you are at optimal and your guns do not hit, your tracking is not good enough.

The point you're missing is that doing lvl 2-3 missions in a Battleship is like i wanting to kill an insect with a sledgehammer.
Read the tracking guide and use the right boat and weapon for the right opponent, obviously you can't have the tank of a battleship and the weapons who goes with it with the tracking speed of frigate size ship. You have to make a choice and do carefull planning
Good luck and fly safe

use all small beam laser, you'll accomplish what you wanted that way. also equip a target painter and a webifier. right now you're using a sniper rifle to kill rabbits.

I would guess you are missing whatever it is you are shooting at
OK, seriously - large guns are intended for large targets... if a target is small and/or moving, you will have problems hitting it...
there was a sticky in ships and modules section that graphicaly explained it but simplified version is that your guns' sig radius is the circle in which shots are going... if this is bigger than the target, you will miss even if the target is standing still
second thing is tracking... if target is moving faster than your guns can track, you will again miss a lot
what you need is shoot large targets (or make smaler ones larger by target painting them) and while doing it try to keep transversal velocity as small as you can (by for example moving away from the target which is coming at you)
for tracking use tracking computer, if you are using short range weapons, use webifier
and train all support gunnery skills to 4 ASAP than go for motion prediction 5
Course once you've seen one Yeti you've seen them all.

Gibberish. With 6mil+ in gunnery and experience with all T2 hybrids on many different ships, Big guns do suck
HAC/Medium guns ftw

I use t2 medium railguns for lvl 3 missions, and i never use large guns.
Large guns are only handy if you are faraway from your rat.
In my case my hitting start at 40km and stops at 3km just good enough for the amo i use which is antimatter.
BTW I use BS, easy for cargo uses a hac or cruiser does not have so much cargo

I recently got my first battleship a few days ago as well, a Megathron, and I thought the same... big guns suck! I tried fitting smaller guns and that worked, but it was no fun. So I got a Dominix and had a lot of fun with drones instead. But then I got an encounter mission, and decided to give the big guns one more try. I fitted 7 425mm rails, 1 tracking comp, 3 sensor boosters, 3 tracking enhancers and 4 mag stabs. Then I warped in at 100km, sweating like a pig... I was scared that it wouldn't work, I was even worried I could loose my ship since I had no AB, no MWD, and no repairer. But! To my great surprise, at 100km everything I shot went "poof". I target a frig: instant "poof". I target a cruiser: bam bam "poof". It was awsome! Big guns are actually pretty good

My 650MM AC's shoot down anything from 1.5km orbitting drones to the 2.5M BS from Vengeance. Most often I use a tracking computer and a web.
I'd say that is ok.
I have worse gunnery skills than you :p

In my case then, "faraway" is about 3km.

The key to using your big guns is stay at range and keep moving away from the target (although moving directly towards the target can work too). Also use a tracking comp or a target painter to increase the number of hits. Using these tactics and modules you should be able to kill frigs at optimal easily.
At close range I use drones but I have found that with mega beams and a good webber I can kill frigs at 9km (move towards or away from target always).
Make sure you have the Motion Prediction skill.
