Currently getting ready to train up to use T2 medium artillery and in the long run, plan on PvPing alot (solo pvping with some group work on occasion). So I'm wondering if most 1v1 PvP is done in close or long range? I know that against NPC's range is great, but is it possible to keep someone from warping away at range?

First question. Which is better? Depends on which ship you're using. And what the situation is. Nothing is truly BETTER then anything else, only better at a situation. You should know that. ;P
And to stop them warping off? A friend in frig/inty/cov ops. Slap 3 2 pointers on a stilleto? W00t. Or the covops waiting cloaked at the gate. Uncloak, "hiya."

So in a situation where you're soloing and have noone to help you keep the target inplace go with shortrange? Gotcha :)

Or....Have a bubble. Set up a large bubble, 40km disrupt range.

I prefer longrange because you don't have to bother with getting within range of the target and a Cyclone just looks like a ship that would be big and slow and attack form 50km away... having it go 1000m/s (or however fast i can get it) and shoot little guns just doesn't seem right.

I'd advise using both, now, right now. Far to many people wait untill they have 'uber skills lv 5' before even thinking about PVP'ing. Start right now, and have fun, when your finnaly able to use tech 2 guns, you'll find you will know enough to actually be effective with them. Not to mention you'll figure out which gun's you like the best.

for solo fighting though, you want to be in scramble range or there is no real point
