Imagine, you are in a BS, are attacked by 1-2 cruisers and cannot fire back - either because you are jammed or are in a mining outfit - what is your best option?
Using FOF-missles? Forget it. Heavy drones? Perhaps, but still not your best option. No, logging out it is. Chances are very good your BS will disappear before it is destroyed.
The official timer is 2 mins - but somehow ships are vanishing earlier, I heared times as low as 30 secs.
Two of my mates were hunting yesterday - PVP. Going through systems, scanning, the works. Finally they found a BS with harvesters out alone in a system - obviously mining. The pinpointed him at one of the plants belts, checked all - nothing. Finally, after around 45 mins of scanning the found him 750 km away from a belt - he was in a hidden belt, mining bistot without any npc pirate interference.
Using MWD they slowly approached him and finally warped directly to him as he appeared on their normal scanners. They jammed & dampened him (a member of the space wolfes, btw) and started to fire. The BS pilot logged out as soon as he realized that he was jammed. And disappeared around 60 secs later with 20% armor left.

Yes, I wonder what CCP is actually thinking when they reduce the time a ship stays rather than increasing it. It used to be 2 minutes but now it is 30 seconds afaik.
Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes some nublar, wrecking for 1155.0 damage. |

Edited by: xeno calligan on 10/09/2003 14:03:16 Yes it's really lame as it is. I would be quite ****ed if I were on the attacking side. Rather than increasing the timer, I would suggest that the timer should start not immidiately when the pilot logs out, but when noone has a lock on the ship.
If a player logs out during combat then that's his/her problem and not the attacking partys problem.

NPCs don't fire at offline ships. From what I have experienced anyway.
I like your idea, Xeno Calligan. It would be the best solution, as they could still keep the timer somewhat low for those times the server isn't feeling too good.

hmm duno about that. Every time I CTD i come back with no shields and armor damage. I dont think it actually knows that you are offline if you CTD right away. |

Same applies for connection problems - I lost my connection mid warp, and came back two minutes later to find myself in a pod :-( surrounded by NPC pirates. So they npc's definitely will continue to fire on you if you lose connection / ctd.

Edited by: Ana Khouri on 10/09/2003 17:16:45 In my CTD's the NPCs were almost inactive.
Perhaps thats because we have to CTD's here. First one is the node death - there the NPCs crash "with you" - since the server goes temporarily down (AFAIK), while with a "connection loss" ctd the server is still running.
Xeno idea would be a perfect solution if they could apply it so that it only happens with player targetlocks and not with NPC locks. Not sure if they can make it that way, though.
Something has to be done, though. As it is now the logout timer makes frigs and cruisers even more superfluous - they may be able to deactive a BS if they operate in groups, but they can for sure not destroy one if the pilot simply logs out. Those 2 cruisers in my story were no ecm cruisers with minimal weapons, btw, but heavily armed lvl3 cruisers.
