Verdis deMosays wrote:So, today I was thinking about how to explain New Eden to other mmo players, and this is what I came up with.
Other MMO: Give a group of kids sticks, tell them where the pinata is, and that it has enough loot in it to make everyone happy. Watch them go cooperate and break the pinata.
EVE: Give a group of kids sticks and tell them that somewhere in the neighborhood there is a pinata with just enough loot for one of them. Don't tell them what it is or looks like, or even that the pinata could be another kid. Just tell them everything is fair game. Watch as they beat each other, the ground, the trees, the cars, and some old ladys dog half to death before realizing that there was only a 50% chance that there even was a pinata to start with.
God I love this game.
This is EVE:
You, the new player, are an adorable golden haired child. You are released, alone but with a map, into a large wilderness park teeming with tens of thousands of rapacious pedophiles. If you are cunning, tenacious and lucky, you can eventually become one of the pedophiles.

And this goes back to the whole "sink or swim" mentality. Some people just have it in them to swim with the other rapaciously pedophilic fish, while others fall victim to the notion that there is no way they could ever be dedicated or competitive enough to excel in this environment, so they resign themselves to other pursuits. |

I told my daughter, if you mix Mos Isley, death stars blowing up, epic x-wing fighter fights, all of the God Father movies and Jaws together you'll get Eve. Throw in a dash of cloak and dagger spy twists, and learn to use a cloak, don't post on Eve-O forums, read everything but believe nothing, and you'll be good. She's been playing since September :) I will babysit your stuff for you while you're gone, all contributions to my ship replacement program are-ásubject to being exploded on the undock

Here's my take on EVE:
"At best, EVE is like speeding around in a stolen Pinto... vintage cannonball cannon ducttaped to the roof... your arm around the shoulders of a dead hooker... and 20 guys armed with frying pans chasing you down on vespas. At worst... it's EXCEL spreadsheets in space." Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

I usually tell people it's a sandbox, so it depends how you play. PVP is everywhere and safety is never 100%, but there are shades of security governing what you can do legally. PVE takes a little more thought then standard fare mob grind, and PVP is completely ridiculous in a good way. Smart newbs can easily kill dumb veterans and such.
It's more a social game where you either build stuff or blow stuff up while chatting or talking on TS. Some people take it so seriously they rage in the chatbox when they die, it's funny. You see... when you die you lose your ship, and you will have to buy or build a new one: and good ships don't come cheap and take a long time to train for. So it takes some time and dedication if you wanna fly something impressive, but you can also buy lots of cheap ships and fly them like you stole them.
It's a very PVP oriented game and it isn't for everybody. It's nothing like World of Warcraft or any of those games. In Eve you can really play the villain or the hero, you aren't shoehorned into some dumb storyline or anything. It's really the players that make the history of the game, it's quite group-oriented with small and large player corporations and alliances all wanting a piece of the pie. |

Before CCP nerfs anything, they should realize that this type of meta is just going to come up again and that it's really their fault for making 0.0 a place where super alliance blobs > small gangs. Which is a real shame, because all of the previous trailers that highlight null sec talk about how 0.0 is comprised of multiple small alliances. In reality, it's come down to 2-3 mega blobs and their smaller allies.
Want TIDI to be fixed, no lame meta, etc? Fix null sec so we actually have space occupied by hundreds of small alliances rather than a few massive coalitions.
P.S. - This is my troll account and I am writing down names of industrialists that made stupid remarks in this thread. it's part of me my "2014 list of people to wardec if I'm bored" list. |

Actually, if we are talking pi+¦ata the attitude of the fat kid will go a long way in determining victory. Position, strategic bumping and fat kid could hold the cards. Hell, she could be her own jiggling blob and camp the pile of loot.

Malcanis wrote:To be fair, patience is a requirement for playing most mmos Yeah, but in EVE you can't lock yourself in a room clad in diapers for a week grinding to level 80 with your friends who are all doing the same thing. This was, of course, what made a person "hardcore" back in the day. Also, raiding things 24/7 and never slipping up lest you be shunned, pwning (remember that?) people in space bar PvP, and sucking up your experience loss from death because, yeah, we old schoolers were "hardcore" like that.
EVE takes patience when it comes to understanding effective fits, roles in fleets, different approaches to the game (whether PvP or PvE... subcap, cap, roaming, camping, exploration, missions, spinning ships and scratching balls), finding the right people to roll with, getting to know who's who on that hip, political scene we have going, and so on.
You can have more modest ambitions in EVE and steer clear of all that, but then you're kinda missing the whole end... game? Yeah. Game and endgame. And the postgame. And the after party. And the 4am stumbling through the park after everyone has gone home and you have no ****ing clue where you parked your car nor do you particularly care... |
