Hi,
I've been playing Eve for about a week now and have begun trawling through the forums here to gain a better understanding of things in the Eve universe. In doing so I keep reading about a number of things that I am having trouble finding information about so i was wondering if someone could please clarify each point for me (and hopefully this will help someone else just starting who might happen to read this!)
1) Renting offices: what is involved in this and what benefits does this give you? ie what can you do with a rented office?
2) Corp Hangers: What are they? Where are they? How do they work?
2a) I'm assuming Corp Hangers have something to do with running your own Corporation. With that in mind is it a good idea to start your own corp and where is a good place to set up one?
3) Rat, Rats, Rat hunting: I've seen these various terms and assume they relate to the same thing but have not the slighest idea what they mean? What is a rat and what do you do with them??
4) Warp bubbles: please explain.
A big thankyou to anyone who can shed some info on each of these questions, muchly appreciated. I'm sure i'm going to have loads more as i progress further into it!

'sup, Zoedin.
1) Player-corporations can rent offices. They have to have at least one (as HQ), and can rent more across the universe, if they desire. Having an office at a station allows the corporation to set up corp-hangars, at that station.
2) Corp-hangars are in the stations that your player-corporation will have rented. They are kind of like communal "Items" hangars, with several tabs to keep things separated. (Containers can be placed in each of the divisions, to allow even more separating). Typically there are some corp-hangars that are not accessible to "regular" members, and others that are set to allow any corp-member to place in / take out.
2a) It would probably be better to join an existing player-corporation at first, if you've never run one (or a similar guild or clan in other games) before. Nothing stopping you from just jumping right in though. Have ready the needed Corporation skills, the 1 million ISK setup fee, and monthly rent for each office, though.
3) Rats typically refers to the NPC spaceships that hang out in asteroid belts, waiting to whack you. Rat-hunting is when you... go hunting these 'rats.
4) No idea. Carebear here. I think they prevent warping or something.

Thanks for the quick response Micia - makes a little bit more sense now. Will give it a try in game when i get the chance.

Rat = Pirate
Rat Hunting refers to going from Asteroid belt to Asteroid belt killing pirates, usually people go rat hunting in 0.7 <= security level

4) Warp bubbles: please explain.
Warp bubbles are what your ship forms to travel at FTL speeds. There's fluff text in the backstory if you want to read up about them. Don't confuse warp bubbles with interdiction spheres - if you run into a sphere, don't be surprised when you wake up in a new clone within the next minute.
Quote: And that's ok for a newbie to do as well (0.7 or less (but not too low) sec level)??
Provided you're still not in the rookie ship, you can go down to 0.5 quite happily in a low level frigate. Stay out of lowsec space (0.4 and below) as NPC pirates will kill you almost as fast as the PC ones will.

Warp bubbles are sometimes called warp tunnels. Its what your ships in while it's warping at 197 bajillion kilometers a second. (this combinations allows you to fly through planets and stars! yay!)
rat = piRATe - an nPC you can blow up for fun and profit pie = PIratE - a PC who wants to blow you up for fun and profit. --- The Amish are coming! The Amish are coming! |

No, in EVE, a warp bubble is an anchorable mobile warp disruptor

I have sometimes gotten a message, "Such and so seconds to collapse of warp bubble." I assumed it was referring to my own warp bubble.

Yes, you form a warp bubble to travel faster than light, it looks a bit like a tunnel is formed while you travel so they're also called a warp tunnel. You can read more here.
Warp-interdiction bubbles are something completely different and nasty :)

Rat / Rats : NPC Pirates. Try not to confuse them with player pirates. The majority (remember that 50.3% of all statistics are made up ;) ) of people refer to npc pirates as rats
Pirates (or pie as said earlier, don't use the term myself) refers to Players who go out hunting we simple miners...
Rat hunting is jumping from asteroid belt to belt to kill the rats, usually to find money and loot, mostly money.
A warp bubble is (in the term I believe you saw it, ie the bottom of the screen while warping) the way your deflector routes the warped space around you ship. Think Startrek. The deflector dish was what created the warp sphere in which the Enterprise travels in. ENTERPRISE season 4 had a good example of this when Trip had to go from the Enterpise to Columbia via cable.

Traveling faster than light may raise some interesting problems. Has anyone ever had the experience of arriving before he left?

Edited by: Zoedin on 22/03/2006 01:49:04 Hey thanks everyone for the responses. That has cleared then up nicely, however, I now have another question.
I notice when viewing my skill training stats on the "My Character" page of the Eve website (and i'm assuming it says the same in game - can't check that at the moment) that it states for a given skill group the following:
Minmatar Frigate / Rank 2 / SP: 2829 of 16000 Spaceship Command / Rank 1 / SP: 1415 of 8000
Where and how does the rank come into it? How do i increase the rank for all my other skills? This one example of my stats is the only one that has a Rank 2 in it, the others are all Rank 1. Do i need to upgrade something or buy something to increase the rank or does it just increase over time??
Oh and also i notice most people have their avatar in their posts (in the left column with their name) - I have an exclamation mark. What's the go there? How do i change it to my characters avatar?
Cheers for any answers

FTL drives, generally, do not cause any sorts of causality violations as they circumvent the speed of light altogether. Thus there is no time dilation or time reversal.

Even if you could increase rank, you wouldn't want to--higher rank means longer training time.
Rank is simply a constant attribute of a particular skill--twice the rank means twice the number of points required to train that skill.

As someone mentioned above, the rank of a skill determines how much longer it will take to train compared to a level 1 skill. Therefore, training a rank 1 skill will take MUCH MUCH less time than a rank 4 skill. Higher rank skills are usually things that involve more specific or complicated processes. Things like battleship training and other high-end skills. Enjoy the rank 1 skills while they last. If I remember, level 5 for rank 1 takes about 7-12 days. One of my higher rank skills recently took 21 days to get to level 5!!

To be exact, rank 4 = exactly 4 times longer than a rank 1.

I believe that CCP has a server which renders all the character's avatars. It's backed up with processing all the new characters so when it gets round to your character in its list, your avatar will start showing up in the forums.

You could very likely be renewing your subsciption for the first or sometimes second time before it shows up... the portrait-rendering takes an 2-3x eternity and there really isnt a thing you can do about it except wait and ignore the big black box where your head should be.
The above post does not reflect the views of any corp or alliance I may be in. If you have a problem with me or my opinion feel free to take it up with me, not my corp/alliance. |

ok geek alert
at full warp speed we are travelling at 3 AU per second 1 AU = 149 598 000 km therefore Warp speed in EVE = 448 794 000 km/s = 448 794 000 000 m/s Speed of light =299 792 458 m / s
Warp speed in EVE = 1497 times the speed of light

That really depends DOGNOSH.
After all, different ships warp at different speeds even :p I think covops with their 9 or 12 au/sec are at the top end of that particular scale.
But relativity of time as a function of ftl travel doesn't translate well to an MMO does it ? So let's forget about that shall we ?

Meh I'm not objecting to the slight bending of the laws of physics.
It's either that of face spending days getting between stations.
I think I can live with a little poetic license.
