Sorry if this has been asked before, I'e gone through a fair few pages and couldn't see it.
I've been playing a few days. I've upgraded my ship a couple of times now, currently on a Rifter. I need to buy a Probe to move some cargo, but I won't really use it afterwards. Since I'm only starting off, I'd rather have the cash now than yet another extra ship lying around. And I've noticed a 'Self-destruct' option while in space. So:
Can I buy my new ship, insure it, then when I've done my cargo run, self-destruct it. Can I still pod back to nearest station? Will my insurance pay out? Will future insurance premiums go up? Will Concord start attacking me for insurance fraud? Is there any downside to doing this?
Obviously, this could also answer what to do with your old ship after an upgrade.

You could also simply sell the ship after you're done with it --

True, but I don't seem to get very good prices in the systems I'm in for any of the ships I've bought so far. Whereas through the insurance I'll get back most of the money I paid for the ship. Just struck me yesterday, wondered would it work.

Just in case DS's answer was too cryptic, yes it works.
Although, it is quite costly compared to using the ship uninsured and then selling it.

I saw a squirrel today jumping from one tree to another, the branch it landed on snapped. So the squirrel was on this falling branch, clambering like mad, thinking it was doing something about it.'

That should cover the loss of your probe. - and personally I like having a stable full of ships .. even if they're crap I still feel rich when I look and see a page full of ships in my hangar... and 49 bantams.. grrr agents. ( i should sell them .. but .. but.. it's a stack of 49 ships.. it appeals to my inner packrat) --- The Amish are coming! The Amish are coming! |

You can always set up a sell order to sell the ship if there are no good buy orders.
