Thanks

Its space opera, but I just finished the latest Peter F Hamilton series - Pandora's Star / Judas Unchained. Uberly good read.
That, and Prey by Michael Crichton (sp?) is a kind of cool scary look at advances in nanotechnology I really liked. --

Well there are a few good authors.
Asimov Baxter Bear Benford Brin Clarke Niven
These are all classic hard scifi authors, and all incredibly famous. You cannot go wrong with any of them.
But for particular books?
Anything in the Uplift Trilogy or New Uplift Trilogy (Brin) Vacuum Diagrams, or any other book in the Xeelee Series (Baxter) Ringworld (Niven)

Try anything by William Gibson, especially his more recent trilogy, which starts with Virtual light.
Also, Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series is probably my favourite sci-fi series ever.
China Mievilles' Perdido Street Station, one of the best steampunk books ever.

Philip K. **** - great author
The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson
In general older is better in Sci-Fi, Diamond Age is one of the few exceptions.

Edited by: Pwyle Kenobi on 22/03/2006 04:09:58 I like Alastair Reynolds. Try his Revelation Space Series (Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, Absolution Gap, Chasm City, Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days). I'm reading a new one by him (not in the Revelation Space universe) called Pushing Ice and it's thoroughly enjoyable.
EDIT: I would describe his writing as sci fi based on science fact rather than space opera. Definitely a good read with involving characters and concepts.

What are some (reletively) quick reads? Like something as long as The Hobbit. I enjoy science fiction, but I can't stand long books, which it seems alot of them are.
Got about halfway through HHGTTG before I got bored of it.

Ages ago, i bought a book full of short murder stories by prominant sci-fi authors, from bear and dıck to herbert and asmimov. it's absolutely top notch, but i love hardboiled film noir too.
unfortumately it was called 'Cyber Killers' which is probably the worst name ever.
no skills, just luck.

Yeah.. another good tip is don't judge a book by it's name, some of the best Sci-Fi has the stupidest names. For an example the movie Blade Runner is based on a story called "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" Which is a pretty good name after you read the book, but for making a sale it's not all that fetching

I thought Prey was too similar to Jurassic Park in theme and feel. Sphere is probably still my favourite Crichton book.

i tried reading some sci-fi books, but it doesnt work well with my imagination, so i stick to fantasy. david gemmell is my favourite, got hooked on his books sicne i read druss and morningstar.
you mayu wanna try SF17 its a 800 page book holding 29 short sci-fi stories, msot of em were cool, 1 though was completly all mighty hedious plot.
william barton has few good space stories, kind of FIREFLY set up,. not too featuristic, not too modern,.
