While I wait for the elite frigates to come out, and while I wait to get rich enough for a cruiser (heh), I've been playing around with different frigates. I started Gallente, but recently I've trained Minmatar and Caldari frigates.
My question is this: what's the best frigate you've found for mining? How about 'rat hunting? PvP? |

For mining, i would recommend the Probe(Minmatar) or Imicus(Gallante). Both have 2 turrets, a large cargo capacity and the use of basic mining drones if you wish.
For NPC Pirates, It has to be the rifter(Minmatar) fitted with small projectile weapons to fire on them for a distance or the Merlin(Caldari) fitted with small hybrids or if you are feeling*****y a punisher(amarr) fitted with some small lasers for in close battle.
Finally, for PVP, I would recommend one of the fine frigate pvp wings out there. If you evemail Ki'li of Infinite Pain Inc. he will tell you a bit more about our own frigate fighter wing corporation we have recently set up. You shouldnt really go into battle with one frigate

The Probe is probably the best miner followed by the Imicus. For pirate hunting I prefer lasers simply because they need no ammunition so I'd choose the Punisher. For PvP the Kestrel is a powerful missile frigate that can rival some cruisers for firepower. The Rifter is probably the best all-around combat ship. If you want to try the electronic warfare route the Griffin is an excellent ship.

Rifter/Punisher/Imicus = best miner, Imicus if you have lvl 3 drones skill and can afford 2 harvesters and a standard mining drone..
Rifter or Punisher if you have electronics skill trained and lots of co-processors, with an industrial to transport for you. Then you have 3 mining lasers per frig and one on the industrial.
Never mine solo. Always have a hauler, even if you have to pay him half your profit :P believe me it's worth it.
2 frigs + 1 industrial = cheap and efficienty mining team.

Tyrrax,
Currently my main solo source of income is my Iteron 3 with one Gauss. I bring a book.
I tried cramming 3 mining lasers on an Incursus, but, well, not enough cpu. Which is the frigate that can (with, say, 3 or 4 elect. skill) mount 3 miners?

Rifter, Punisher, Incurus have 3 turret slots if I recall. Havn't flown a frigate in a long time. ---------------------------------------

Rake,
check out the bluemonster web site. It shows all the differences of the ships.

I hope CCP will wait as long as possible.
The game really isn't ready for a line of frigates to come and deliver the finishing blow to the current frigates. --- soonÖ |

"The game really isn't ready for a line of frigates to come and deliver the finishing blow to the current frigates."
... Well, unless there's a change from what is listed in the TTi database, am not that sure if slightly beefed up Condor or Griffin is going to really make that much difference.... or 'kill' existing frigates...
Now, elite edition of Kestrel... that would be nice :s~~ ('though to be fair, Kestrel is elite pretty much enough as it is)

What the game doesn't need is the consistent, overwhelming superiority of cruisers over frigates. By that I mean, there should not only be a (less expensive) intermediate step, but also there should be some benefit of having a small, fast ship over a big, slow ship. The elite frigate, if my spider-sense tells me right, to some extent satisfies both of those issues.

The game needs to balance for small fast ships. For example, a large BS gun should have absolutely no chance of hitting an orbiting frigate travelling at 600 m/s and faster. That way, BS's would require fighter escorts or have to mount smaller, faster tracking guns. At the moment, large BS guns, with the right mods and skills, can hit small fast ships, which is very unbalancing. IMO. -------------------------------------------- Dead

Incursus is the best mining frigate.
Mine in a probe or Imicus until you can buy an Industrial.
Then use an 3 turret frigate to mine. Electronics lvl 4 and one nanomechanical or better CPU enhancer should be enough for 3 miner I's. The more rare mining lasers you use the less CPU you 'll need.
Incursus is better than other 3 turret frigs Rifter and Punisher because of it's drone bay which can be used for defence or mining.

As for elite frigates.... i don't think they are needed yet.
Make frigates and lower end cruiser more useful in combat. I don't know about most of you but the BS craze which is leading to X Battleships Vs Y Battleships only battles is extremely boring.
Combat should work in ways that will force people to have ships from all categories in the fleets not just try to get more battleships than what the opponent is going to bring.

With the upcoming CPU enhancer nerf, the only frigate you'll be able to equip 3 miner I's on will be the Punisher (with electronics 4). Either that or try to get 3 EP-S gaussians which have 51 CPU each.

I don't care so much about elite frigs. What I'd really like to see are Corvettes and Destroyers.
A Corvette would be a frig that had just enough power grid to mount a single medium gun. Say between 300-400. There could be a Gallente one with a large drone bay but not as much grid. They could have a little bit more shields and armor too but otherwise but much like a frig. Picture a beefed up Tristan or Punisher with a gun half as big as the ship. OMG PWN The cost in minerals to produce one of these I would think would be about 1 million isk.
A Destroyer would be a cruiser with just enough grid to mount a large gun. Around 4000 would do it. I see these costing roughly 15-20 million in minerals. 7 mid slot Caldari EW/battleship killer anyone? Or a long range destroyer with a 1400mm Arty or Tachyon Beam?
These classes of ships would be much cheaper than the next class of ships but would have enough fire power that a very good pilot or a team of pilots could take out the next bigger size of ship. With cool destroyers you might see less people running around in battleships that don't have the skills to use them. Corvettes could be relatively expendable ships corps could give to their n00bs to guard deep space mining ops. ----------------------------------------- Sig rented by Drethen Nerevitas. |

There are destroyers that are smaller than frigates too
This discussion could get a little crazee
I think that BS's should be scrapped completely as they suck anyway (I can feel the angst already), and introduce an uber-indy with 450000 powergrid and 5 cpu.

Battleships don't suck. They're just hard to use in their element. You have a ship with guns that can reach 60km easily...
And are trapped by exit warp mechanics at 20km.

So I'll admit to having little to no knowledge of the names and sizes of naval ships. I still think a beefed up frig class that could take on cruisers and a beefed up cruiser class that can take on battleships would be a nice addition to the game.
I'd like to see thorax meets megathron, punisher meets maller, maller meets armageddon, blackbird meets scorpion, bantam meets moa, rifter meets stabber... I think there could be some pretty cool ships in between the current catagories we currently have. ----------------------------------------- Sig rented by Drethen Nerevitas. |

Edited by: Rodj Blake on 11/09/2003 15:28:44 It usually goes
Corvette - Frigate - Destroyer - Cruiser -Battlecruiser - Battleship
Although there are exceptions ie I think that the Royal Navy's Type 42 destroyers are actually smaller than the Type 23 frigates

Hmm, carriers, now there's an idea for a future ship class. Carriers that can hold several Frigates in their belly. No idea how that would work in-game, but it sounds cool. ----------

Part of the confusion is that different navies now use the terms to describe different things.
Frigates and destroyers now tend to be designated depending on role, rather than size. Frigates are usually (although not always, andf not always exclusively) anti-submarine warfare vessels. Destroyers tend to be escort vessels, typically tasked with either air defence duties or as "pickets" to keep other surface ships away from the high value units like carriers, troop ships etc.
That's true of the Royal Navy, anyway. I think it's also largely true of the USN, but I could be wrong.

submarines = cloaking device which is coming soon
carriers = drone ships i.e. most battleships, thorax, vexor, etc.
