Hey I need some guidance here...I am new to playing MMORPG's (always played FPS before), but I am really hooked to this game and I am not sure what to do since I have never played this game type. I have read that I need to join a corp, but not entirely sure how to do this and reading these forums it seems most everyone is into doing PvP. I am not sure if I am ready for this either. I say this because I took a mission to eliminate some rats from a mining field, but it was like 15 on one and I was being attacked in groups of four and I didn't stand a chance :( (kind of embarrassing to admit), I can't imagine how I would do against another person. So please any insight on these subjects is appreciated..so far I have just been training skills and doing basic mission, but I want to get into the combat aspect of the game...
Thanks

I'd suggest you hop onto Recruitment chat and find a corp, or join EVE-University.
EVE-University is very famous for helping newbies in general. They're quite good at it too.

Even in it's hey-day it was nothing more than a few friends mainly looking for the communication benefits. It's fairly safe to say that I've been playing solo my entire career. I've had little trouble maintaining a decent wage that allowed me to do what I wanted. I've managed to keep my spending habits on par with my skill progression and ship needs. My point is, don't feel like you HAVE to join a corp.
2.) You do not have to participate in PvP. I would be what is termed a carebear. I've spent the vast majority of my time so far in safe space. I've done trading for most of my money. Some do mining or agent missions. I go pirate hunting when I want a little more action, and to further suppliment my income. My point is you don't HAVE to do PvP.
That said, you CAN join a corporation if you like. A good corporation will certainly help you understand combat and ship load-outs better so you can better stand up to the rats or other players. Otherwise, just start patroling asteroid belts in 0.7+ space and look for rats. You shouldn't encounter more than 2-3 at a time, and nothing that you won't be able to run away from if they get the upper-hand (which should be rare.)

Edited by: Lyden on 22/03/2006 19:52:13 Guild/corps do two things: 1.) Meet your social needs. B.) Provide additional players to access content your unable to do alone.
In EvE this "access" is going to be 0 space. (maybe some complexes)
Any corp that takes people out of the gates will likely not be in 0 space. So they will not be doing the things a corp is needed for. So why be in that since you'll just have to leave it when the day comes you want to do more than putz around empire?
(unless as stated above it's to play with friends for social reasons)
If you new, learn the game. Figure out what you want to do, then get good at it. (mining, fighting...ect)
Look at corps, find one you like. Learn what they want you to have before joining. (Ex be in a covertor, or BS...ect)
Talk to those people once in awhile while you training up your skills, so when you have the needed skills to apply they already know and like you. (asking for advice is a good way, people like to share knowlege and it gives you insight into how that corp operates)
You will have to do your homework. Nothing good comes without you having to put in your due diligence to get it. Inside the game or in RL.

Aye you don't really need a corp. Mine is just myself and a couple friends so that we can have a ready access chat channel and corp hangars to store items that we get for mutual use.
