Now, having your ship explode around you is rarely a pleasant experience. And for reference, im NOT a pirate. I do however frequent areas where pirate attacks are likely, and several times have flown home in my pod.
Chatting with a member of SNIGG last night in Local after an (unsuccessful i might add) attemp to jump me in my mining ship he seemed quite surprised at the lack of smacktalk on my part, i simply replied that "its all part of the game." I'm not saying i dont get frustrated and annoyed when im destroyed while dealing with a pair of npc rat cruisers, because i do. I just feel theres no need to go into a rage when someone attacks/destroys your ship.
so while some pirates (by this i mean the good ones, not the suicide BS attacks in highsec or random gank squads) run on a code of etiquette, theres no reason victims of piracy shouldnt also act on a code.
1) dont smack, its annoying. all it does is clutter up local and annoy people, including the guy who has you locked, scrammed, nos'd and webbed *pop*
2) if you got buddies in the system, stall for time and call them in. but dont be a "haha now my whole corp is gonna hunt you down and kill you and desecrate your corpse" and spam local with "5mil isk for <playername>'s corpse!"
3) you can learn a lot from pirates about how you were found, their setups, ships etc, and how to counter them. have a chat, most pirates will be surprised enough that you are being pleasant that they will offer advice or even on occasion some sort of monetary compensation.
4) offer them isk to leave you alone. pirates are in it for the money as well as the thrill of the hunt.
im sure lots of players will have other suggestions :)
one more thing, dont be idiots, have a waypoint set for one system over, as soon as he enters the belt, hit the autopilot, unless they warp in right next to you you stand a fair chance of getting away alive, send a cheeky message in local "better luck next time" and have a laugh, its good for the soul.
watch your back in lowsec and remember that its all just a big game

Tip #5.) If you do manage to push away the pirates successfully and they are forced to safe spot, now is another good time to refrain from smacktalking in local. Good job on fighting back the pirates, but ****ing off a group of PvPers that can call in backup is not going to make your victory feel anything other than temporary. --------------

Finally!
Someone is WISE regarding this manner.
Being a former pirate, I would agree with everything you are saying, except for the "say something cheeky" part. his ticks off the pirate enough that he gets HIS friends, or usually it just makes you look like an idiot.
Otherwise, good post. _________________________________________ 2005.01.17 22:04:22 combat Chackle [PUSY] perfectly runs from you, wrecking for 1500 cowardice. |

Edited by: Turas Kain on 22/03/2006 23:48:27 Couldn't agree more. People get miffed off when pirates smack at them but given the choice wording of conversations/mails frequently sent to them, is it any suprise?
Your also a heck of a lot more likely to achieve something by talking reasonably rather than ranting, threatening & swearing.

Smacktalk cost a guy his life today. im scanning some belts in my ferox, i see another ferox, warp in, follow proceedure, hes into armour, then into hull, i stop my weps, convo him. just as i convo him, he shouts in local. *omg duffman you ********, you pirate ********, people like you ruin the game!* he then yells for help, but the local pirate corp (who actively hunt me anyway) reply no, as he smacked pirates. then i declined him a ransom and blew up his pod laughing.
dont smack!

I'll add my own, don't make threats to the pirate that you can't keep. IE I know someone in BOB and they're all coming to get you.
I once had someone tell me, that atuk were going to war dec my corp (Supremacy at the time) because he knew someone. I pasted the logs into allience chat and all the atuk leaders had a good laugh.

Thats always funny, I had some Idiot threaten me saying that Zombies were gonna come kick my ass....pasted the logs and msgs into zombie/si/tdg channel and we all had a good laugh.
Its happened to me a few times, but that was the only time they picked an ally

Speeking as a (occasionaly anti-pirate) empire carebare, as a rule I never smack, I might even respond with a gf if it was one but don't expect me to lavish you with prase over local about how uber your setup was and how quickly I went down, I probibly didn't come looking for a fight, I probibly wasn't that well equiped for one and that was my ship you just melted.
Pirates make the game much more interesting and I will be the first to admit it; eve would be boring without them, but that doesn't mean I have to like them if i'm unlucky enough to meet one packing much bigger guns than I am.

by 'something cheeky' i mean saying something like "better luck next time" or "close but no cigar" if it leaves a silly grin on your face, its bound to leave on on the pirate's. not to annoy or irritate the pirate, just for a bit of a laugh.
other than greifers, id like to think that most pirates are actually decent human beings, and enjoy a laugh every now and then.
if you cant laugh at yourself what right do you have to laugh at someone else?
btw the closest ive come to smacking on my current char was saying "lameness" in local when a dude in a stealth bomber jumped me and i got stuck on some roids. (after which we chatted in private and he gave me 1mill isk "for your trouble, we're not all a**holes")

definetly good tips. smacktalk = bad. Even if you've won and the pirate os dead or in a safespot, theres nothing to say that your smacktalk won't annoy him and he'll call in freinds to shut you up, or come back in one of his better ships. NEVER smack, EVER. It'll end up bad.

Most pirates ARE griefers by nature, they have to be to do what they do. That doesn't mean they do not enjoy a laugh...it is just usually at your expense, not theirs.

I don't smack, when I insult people, it's an art.
However I don't really see the point in being nice. You're sheep, We're wolves. Wolves don't chat up sheep after eating them.
From an ebil pierats PoV of course, I make sure to pod smacking victims as well.
Threats are the best. My favorite:

That was hilarious, money baby money. [Oh, my bad, in the original change you said kbs]

QFT, don't expect money or loot back... but it's happened and when I have a good conversation or recieve at least a shred of respect, I'll almost always let the person have a free pass out, or whatever. I want fights, not your corpse, basically. (Though getting both, doesn't hurt.)
In short: Cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

getting smacked and cute 'fanmails' can be pretty entertaining , in small amounts... but when the smack last for hours and hatemails beeing sent over and over , its just annoying.

When victims smack after I pop their ship, it's hilarious. They threaten to kill me and use my bones to kill my family etc, it's a good laugh.
Then I pod them again :) -----------------------------------------------

Smacktalk has a tendency to bring out large enemy fleets. Unless that is what you are going for you might want to stay quiet :)
Another "rule" nobody has mentioned... it isn't bright to shoot at people who are flashing red unless you know what you are getting into. Way to many people have taken a go at my Claw or Ishkur and convoed me after the fact with "warp scambeler?"... How do you think I got flashing red? It honestly wasn't cause I royally ****** up some lvl 4 agent mission.

"Sticks and stone will break my bones, but words will never hurt me".
If someone called you a "******* ganker" in the street would you start crying or punching them? People should just chill a bit, sometimes people lose their temper and say rude things, this happens in any competative game - watch football or hockey for example.
I also don't really see why people make such a big deal out of smack, if you have someones pod scrambled for a ransom and they are not willing to pay surely it is likely that they are going to call you a smeghead or a*****master If in RL some maniac was about to kill me, and I knew he was going to pull the trigger anyway, I'd definately say something funny about his mum .
I do agree that smacktalking from the safety of a station or a safespot is pretty lame however, a smacker should go down with his ship.
Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say 'noob' at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred. |

Sometimes some smack is fun (i.e. when the angry party is just kidding around)...
But more often then not, it's just someone mashing their keyboard with bulging veins in the forehead, attempting to violently destroy their keyboard in their conveyance of how much they hate you, utilizing mostly third grade vocabulary, an army of typos and the maturity of like... well... a third grader.
I guess that's pretty funny too, now that I mention it -- but it gets tiring hearin how someone is gonna "kill you omg" because you, with no bragging, boasting or being a jerk, blew up their ship.
In short: Cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

Smack talk usually implies the maturity level of the player. I can understand losing your favourite ship can be vexing, but it's nothing a good pint can't cure.
Though if I can make some angsty teenager quit, so much the better! --------------------------------

From the pirate-way-of-view ->
I don¦t like smacktalk. But the most time I avoid it to say :"Calm down.....it¦s just a game.....we are all only players who want to have fun in the game.......at the end we are all only players just in a different corp and gamestyle." Works 85% of the time
The ONLY VERY bad smacktalk I had was with some members of the SupremeCENSORED corp. The named corp knows who I mean That had nothing to do with fun anymore. Sad to see that some ppl take this game too seriously
But I¦m happy to see that the most players got some brain and just enjoy this game. DONATE ISK TO SN MAN!!!! Current Location: Relax and drinking a beer with Dreez and waiting for TomB¦s Blaster changes |

i have a Cyclone to insure kthx
got pirated last night "500k for your ship" *thinks to self "500k for a 200k rifter?"* "nah id rather explode"
got the thrasher well down into armour, and i still recovered most of my modules (including 2x 200mm scout autocannons [and lol as if pay for them, relatively easy to replace])
i didnt feel too bad about it really, all i actually lost was the convienience of having a Rifter in system to clear off belt rats while mining. and i had been dodging pirates all night |
