This can only be expressed in an image:
Orbit GUI concept
Dear mods, if this gets more than 15 reads, I'll go ahead and swap it strictly to a link. Not sure if that applies to this end of the forum.
Basically, you preset your orbit, but you can add or subtract a kilometer on the fly. I was thinking you could make a negative net orbit simply reverse the direction one would normally orbit. The M1 and M2 are presets like on a luxury automobile seat.

Slightly off point, I'd also like to see warp in points for planets and moons eliminated and instead have a similar or the same system as seen here with orbiting planets and moons

This is very good and needed; along with the rest of ship (and drone) control gui currently available via drop down menues to be redesigned using this idea as a template.

Looks very useful! Although it would probably have to come with something similar in the "keep at range" section, and you might run the risk of cluttering up the screen a bit. But nonetheless, definitely a cool idea.

would be nice if they saved the orbit distance with ure ship. so my blasterboats can all be saved with the right range and my laser boats can default to a different range.
haveing at least 2 orbit buttons would be awesome. one for approach orbit, say set to 10-15 km to give u a nice transverse when approaching. then u can click on the 500m one to get under their guns.
frackin awesome

I love the idea of having more than one preset!

Great idea.
Change ships and you can have a preset config for each. If you jump into another ship ATM, you have to select another ship in space to change it, you should be allowed to select and change the preset without needing to select any ship/object first.
Agreed with the drones too. Buttons for "attack target" and such should be available instead of using the context menu.

love the idea - make it on/off togglable and itll be perfect =)
ive been thinking about adding an (optional) fourth row of buttons at the bottom, for drones
just add another option to the right arorow menu saying "hide drones" and all the drone spaces go invisible =)
it would be a simple "attack" function, with maybe the 6th slot bound to "all attack" and the 7th to "return and orbit" etc

Absolutely brilliant and would allow us to zero in on our weapons optimal ranges.

signed! best thing! I hope CCP begin to think at these things a bit more, instead of putting in the game new ships over new ships constantly!

So here I am. I signed and I would add the idea of shortcuts through CTRL and ALT keys for the M2 and M3 presets.
Click orbit => M1 CTRL click orbit => M2 ALT click orbit => M3

Any guess as to whether the orbit function is part of presets (client side) or is it server side? I seem to recall losing my presets when losing cache.
Anyway, any modification of the client is verbotten.
What I'm concerned about is whether on-the-fly orbit setting wouldn't cause lag, and wouldn't it get macroed anyway by a program.
If it is client side, and it's not a problem, might as well give the average player the same performance as they guy that's hacked the cache dat files or whatever.

My guess is its client side. I've installed EVE on three different computers. Changing the orbit preset on one of them isn't reflected on the others.

Not sure how you put that image together so well. Looks like it is actually in the game. Excellent job.
I've been wanting such a feature since I started my world of EvE over a year ago.

Old thread I know but I think this would be a nice feature.
A somewhat different way of doing it occurred to me. If changing the orbit distance worked the way changing speed works(clicking on the speed/warp indicator)then it would only be a matter of a simple click to change orbit range. CCP could even cut the speed indicator in half lengthwise making 1 bar the usual speed bar and a 2nd for orbit range.
And I like the other idea that was mentioned about being able to manually select warp-to distances also.
