To give you an awnser, it would be nice if you could give info on what rats your killing. I'm presuming your talking about NPC?
And also what kind of ship your flying, fitting, mission lvl or system security level.

Edited by: Nyabinghi on 23/03/2006 07:47:47 Well they're fast little NPC rats. I fly Minmatar ships. I know you can click in space and in overview to target. I know there is a short cut with ctrl-click. But I find myself unable to accomplish what I want i.e. sending a specific gun to a certain rat. I tend to throw every thing at just one. So maybe my order of things are off. What I click on first...then second...

When NPC'ing solo, I would advise taking the rats out one at a time. Just lock the ship you think is the biggest threat and immediatly target a secondary.
Everytime you kill one ship, you'll loose one ship hitting you, thus helping your tank or ship to survive. When you asign a weapon for every rat in your overview (like 5 NPC's) and hit every single NPC with one gun, you'll probably be in one of them shiny eggs quite quick.
There are mods for autotargeting if I recall correct, they are midslots modules.
Hope this helps. ----------------------

The best way to target something is to hold ctrl and l-click it in your overview. I adjust my overview to sort by "Name" so it is easier to target them and you are not accidentally targeting a gate or a radio antenna or whatever else is nearby.
As far as setting weapons to hit certain targets, that is all done manually. You can't set a certain weapon to shoot a certain target automatically. There is no mod that will auto-target stuff. You can set your auto target in the menu when you hit the ESC key (it will be on the bottom left and you just enter the number of badies you want to auto target back).
I think that is what you are looking for. Good luck. ----------------------------------------------- "Eve is a sandbox. Pick up a shovel and make yourself a castle."

the last time i used an autotargeting system, it ended up targeting all the structures even though i was being attacked by 5+ NPC rats.

The Auto-Target moduels are fairly worthless. Personaly I suggest recycling them and putting something usefull in the slot. :)

it's generally better to kill 1 npc every 30 seconds than to kill 5 npcs at the same time every 2 and a half minutes. Remember every NPC that's gone is that much less damage you have to take. so don't spread your fire around --- The Amish are coming! The Amish are coming! |

There are occassions when hitting multiple targets is warranted I have found - but its limited to when you are shooting at a target that's say more then 10km away, and there is one close to you that you want to NOS (cap vampire module). But that not terribly common. What I sometimes have trouble deciding on the spot is which one to take out first - the little guys buzzing around me or the big guys sitting out there shooting missiles. Generally, if the little guys are easy to take out I go for them first. It all depends.

I agree with the poster that auto-targeting devices are semi-useless. I have been testing one with NPCs and with the weaker ones (.07 and above where they don't jam) it does ok.
Below .7, they tend to jam a lot and the device is of limited value. With a faster ship that allows you to get out of range, it does provide one benefit and that is when the jamming does stop, you get a lock quickly and if you already have weapons ready, you will send them Tango Uniform a lot faster.

Concentrating fire on a single target is good advice, with some exceptions, though. For example right now I'm running Level 2 missions in a Caracal. I almost always end up fighting a mix of cruisers and frigates. Accordingly I mount both heavy and assault launchers and target them separately -- heavies go for the cruisers and assaults go for the pesky frigates.

Edited by: Drizit on 24/03/2006 03:26:19 From experience, the autotargetting mods are a complete waste of time. I turned off the target back from the escape menu and when 3 NPC rats attacked my ship and it didn't even blip once even though it had been active for over 10 minutes. I still ended up manually targeting them.
Needless to say, I turned the target back option back on and put the autotargetting mod into the recycle bin. Complete waste of a high slot.

I use the overview to target as many as my ship will handle.. Currently 5. Then I click on the first, hit F1, second F2, third F3 and so on.
If I'm useing paired guns, say I have six and I want to fire 2 at each single ship I have a keybind that does that on my Logitech G15 Keyboard.
basicly, you are limited to point and click of the mouse either in space, or on the over view and F1-F8. - -
